A magnificent time was had with the two Cheli Pride brothers at Leopard Gorge on our second night in the Mara.

Initially one of the Cheli brothers was spotted near the top of the gorge, and shortly later, he was joined by his brother.

In this image, the lion had made his way to a distant tree for a manicure. He soon returned and joined his brother for some bonding and lazing around before the night's hunting began.

When you need to scratch, you gotta scratch, no matter how good is the game

There was a scratch in the sky...

We said goodbye to our Scratchie Boy on Wednesday this week :-(. He was such a good pet and we will miss him so much.

Scratch was 13 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes just last week. We were just starting with his insulin treatments when he developed a complication as a result of the diabetes. He had a severe case of ketoacidosis - a condition that happens with some cats (and people) where the body will rob the muscles and organs of nutrients that it isn't getting from food. Scratch was very sick in the end.

Chin scratches are the best!

It was really entertaining watching this giant animal seek relief from an itch by rubbing against this tree aggressively. It was so loud that I thought for sure she'd break the tree she was leaning into. I have a really funny video of her rubbing her backside back and forth across the tree which makes me think of Baloo from The Jungle Book.

Adult Brown Pelican in breeding plumage on Armand Bayou. Males and females are pretty much indistinguishable except, perhaps, by certain behaviors. I'm guessing this one is a male.

Identification of the bird as Rufous Hummingbird was peer-reviewed. Please refer to the photo of Rufous Hummingbird with tail spread. [Sixth photo prior to this one.] It could be an adult female or immature male.

Scratches, the first calf of the season I had a decent swim with, though I was only in the water for perhaps 30 seconds in total. Mother resting head-down behind the calf.

An itch, also known as pruritus, is a general sensation arising from the irritation of skin cells or nerve cells associated with the skin. While it can be a nuisance, pruritus serves as an important sensory and self-protective mechanism, as do other skin sensations such as touch, pain, vibration, cold and heat.

Despite approximately a century of pruritus research, there is no single effective antipruritic treatment, but several topical and orally-administered agents are available that suppress itching in certain clinical settings. These agents include lotions and creams (such as calamine and hydrocortisone), antihistamines, opioid antagonists, aspirin and ultraviolet light therapy.

Though it is helpful in relieving the itch, scratching offers only temporary relief and may cause the skin to become further irritated and possibly tear, which could result in an infection.
