Edinburgh's traffic-congested streets seem forgotten as our Leyland Titan bus has made its way out to the lush green suburbs, few more so than at Silverknowes in the north west of the city. Builders McTaggart and Mickel, who'd built much of Glasgow's Victorian tenements bought land in the Silverknowes and Hillpark areas and completed building many houses here in 1955. For some years residents had to walk to Muirhouse for their bus, so it was hardly surprising that when service 27 was extended to Silverknowes a few elderly residents showed appreciation by having jam scones ready for crews waiting at the then terminus! Memories do fade over the years but I think this crew were changing the nearside screens here near the rear of the bus or admiring the privet hedge !

Like all good things some staff spent too long on the scones and soon Head Office sent a portly inspector known as 'The Beast' to investigate 'irregular running' of services in the area. ('irregular' being the management term for late or early buses!). The following day an interdict was given that the terminus move to the opposite side of the wide Parkway rendering the scones way off limits. Later a lady resident told me 'a kind inspector' would often come down and eat the scones, and the Beast himself told me he 'killed two birds with the one scone' (!) that day - so ensuring the buses ran on time and that the scones were still appreciated - by him !

For those operationally minded fleet 530 was a Marine bus on loan to Tollcross, and buses terminating here on Silverknowes Parkway in those years were the 8 (Central) 16 (Leith) 27 (Tollcross). and around the corner at Silverknowes Court the 24 and 29 (Tollcross) .

I know what you’re thinking. Scones are all dry and tasteless and icky. And they’re just generally all kinds of awful, right? Well guess what? These totally aren’t like that at all. They rock! They’re flakey and delicious, and here's the recipe. You need to seriously make these RIGHT NOW.

I cook every day and I also like to cook for pleasure.

My Italian grandmother taught me to make ravioli (the dough, filling, sauce ...) ... tagliatelle, pascualina cake, pizza ... fainá ..... pancakes with spinach, cheese fondue, fruit and chocolate.

I like vegetarians food and sprouts and green small to pick and eat at the moment.

Also make quick scones for tea of five;-)

I also like the Catalan cuisine and good cuisine from around the world!

My own twxture!

We baked scones tonight to see if I have finally overcome my distaste for them. You can read about (and see) the entire ordeal here.

This is such a historic place, we had to pay a visit while we were near Perth visiting friends. Built in red sandstone with a castellated roof, it is an example of the Gothic Revival style in Scotland. Scone was from at least the 9th century the crowning-place of the Kings of Scots and home to the Stone of Scone, more commonly referred to as the Stone of Destiny. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scone_Palace

Scone’s tug-of-war team digs in at the Lochearnhead Highland Games, every muscle straining for victory. Tradition, teamwork, and a rope you don’t dare let slip—sometimes winning is all about the pull.

William Atkinson (London), 1803-12 (external work largely finished 1807) with parts of the original palace at the south and east wings completely refaced. Gothic, asymmetrical, 2-storey and full basement, ashlar; exterior simply detailed with two octagonal turrets on W, centre 3-storey tower on S and a pair of rectangular towers flanking main entrance on E.

Also within estate office survey plans of old palace drawn by Andrew Cock in 1789; and a set of 2nd Feb. 1802 signed G. S. (George Saunders, who had done work at Ken Wood for Lord Stormont as Lord Mansfield then was) for restoring remodelling and extending the existing house. These drawings are remarkable in that they show considerable understanding of Scots 17th century detail and it was possibly on account of their novelty and lack of appeal to current fashion that the scheme was superseded.

Made cheese scones for my friend today.

it's been awhile again, flickr. i find it hard to keep up with you. but with the new year, i promise to be more consistent on here.

These are Spelt Scones with pine nuts, pecans and currants added. We love Scones! I love my baking dish. You oil the whole thing, even the blue parts between the scones for obvious reasons. Scones are messy and sticky when in batter form. So to clean this is easy, you can wash it in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher. I like the uniform scones too, and you can cut them and they don't crumble!
