Schools are still open in France... for how long?

Just another day and another collection.

It struck me later that the local Council no longer collects from the school and wondered when they stopped collecting.

Found this boat at a sailing school in Redwood City, California. For training pirates? Or training to fend off pirates?

Thomas Dale High School

Note: Thanks to Flickr member Jordan McAlister, I've learned that this building is not a church as I had originally labeled it; but is an old school, now serving as a community center (and perhaps church, since I'm almost certain that I recall a church sign on this property, hence my original label and description). Please see comments from Jordan for more information.

Abandoned school still standing. Despite being missing the windows, is still in relatively good shape.

An old one room schoolhouse in rural Matheson Ontario. My Dad attended this school from 1933 until I think 1940, and prior to that my Grandmother from what I understand was a teacher in this school. It was located a short 2 mile walk from my grandparent's homestead. My Dad would walk this route to school in temperatures during the winter as low as -30c. If I remember the story correctly, he had to walk uphill both ways lol :-)

This building in Silver City Idaho was erected in 1892 and housed all grades including high school with 3 teachers, one for each level. Many notable Idahoans attended school here.

A "school" of fish!

This is actually a fish I caught. (And released.)

Empty Schools a sign of the times.

“Need budget for renovation” says the sign outside the old Talaphat Suksa School on Rattanakosin island, Bangkok.

Built during the reign of Rama V it must have been a delight for the eye at the time.

Amsterdam school style

It is tightened in two symmetrical blocks Amsterdam School style which lie like a horseshoe behind the Concert Hall and meet directly behind the Concert Hall with a central portion which has two towers. More affluent citizens could subscribe to the houses, then they could be adapted to their needs. The buildings thus have varying widths and also the facades are richer or less richly decorated. For the construction there was the garden of the Concert Hall. The houses hide the curved back of the concert hall, which contains on the ground floor and the Mirror Hall on the first floor of the Small Hall.

An old abandoned one-room schoolhouse sits alone on the snow-covered prairie outside of Havre, Montana.

A lot of these old schools in Kansas.

The High School for Greenville, NY. Now an Elementary school.

my school from 1958 to 1965, named after the poet, born in Macon, Georgia, 3 February, 1842; died in Lynn, North Carolina, 7 September, 1881.

The school is known for its landmark replica of the State of Liberty, which was erected at the northwest corner of the school's property in 1952 following a fund drive by Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Visit the school's informative website at www.tulsaschools.org/schools/lanier

The school canteen was renovated a few times since we were using it. This one is quite modern and airy.

Maybe I'm mistaken expecting you to fight

Or maybe I'm just crazy

I don't know wrong from right

But while I am still living

I've just got this to say

It's always up to you if you want to be that

Want to see that

Want to see that way

- You're coming along!

shot during open monument weekend of 2004 (theme was modern architecture), Peter Pan school in St Gillis by Leon Stynen (architect of several well know buildings in Antwerp like The Singel, Crest/Holiday Inn hotel), afaik the only (?) Stynen building in Brussels. the (60s ?) building needs a little freshening up but the whites, articulate concrete and pure lines prove that modernism shouldn't be oppressive or anonymous.

This is my friend Terry. He's an 8th grade teacher not too far from my house. We were discussing things about their computer lab that we were going to re-vamp. And since I was there I wanted to take a portrait of him in his class room.

For some reason I thought he would have the classic style class room setup. With his desk right in front of the blackboard facing all the students and all the students desks facing him. So I had pre-visualized how I wanted this picture of him at his desk with the days lesson plan behind. But his class room was not setup that way.

So we tried a few things and this is by far my favorite one. I like all the students projects in the background and you can see the tennis balls on the feet of all the chairs.

The political school of Josip Broz Tito is an example of brutalism, a kind of architecture, which can be seen ambivalent for sure. The school was built in the 70s, when the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia was on its zenith and opened 1981 with pomp and circumstance. Politicians came from all over the world, the school had a huge library, much about communism and socialism. But after Tito's death it operated only for one decade and closed already 1990. In the 90s it was a refugee hostel during the Balkan war. Obviously nobody wants the huge building, apart of a swiss movie company, which offered 3 Mio. $, to use it for a horror movie. Although the concrete building has a copper roof, there are many foliage plants and high humidity in it, ferns are overgrowing the bar and all smells moist and moldy. The cinema behind the bar is completely abandoned, in the projection room there are still 2 big projectors and empty film spools are lying around. Everywhere books are scattered, between purple desk chairs, religious little pictures an the walls of the rooms, a lonely prehistoric blood pressure gauge is lost in the doctor's room, where file cards and medical reports do not give a damn about data privacy.

After the last congress of the Communist Liga of Yugoslavia in January 1990 the school went bancrupt. A military training center was there for the army and for the French Foreign Legion. Now the building is lost and abandoned since a long time. The floor space is 8500 m², the building has 145 rooms, including a large gym, a restaurant, bar, cinema and a library, most of the rooms left empty.

I've seen several school buses that have been repainted, but this tops my list. It was at a canoe and kayak rental place near Manchester VT where we rented kayaks.

My daughters' elementary school had a big outdoor ice cream social and they volunteered me to the principal to take yearbook photos. How could I say no(on 2 hours notice) since it is a chance to build up the old portfolio? The lighting was a horrible challenge because the sun was already setting at 6PM when it started, but I messed about with my ISO and my flash and got some things to work. The fire department was there with the ladder truck giving ladder rides - I would have loved to go up and take pics down but it I couldn't bring myself to take up a little kid's place in line! Kids could also explore a police car and a number of city officials were there as many of their children go to this public school(for you Brits, I think you call it a private school - it is run by the local government). The DJ spun music all evening and the free ice cream and hot fudge were flowing!

We did a small after-lunch hike in my hometown Schuders in the Swiss Alps. The water fountain offered an interesting view - strings of algae formed around the metal grid.

I processed a balanced and an enhanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them, and carefully adjusted the curves.
