Scarborough Castle is a former medieval Royal fortress situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea and Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. The site of the castle, encompassing the Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, an Anglo-Scandinavian settlement and chapel, the 12th-century enclosure castle and 18th-century battery, is a scheduled monument of national importance.
Fortifications for a wooden castle were built in the 1130s, but the present stone castle dates from the 1150s. Over the centuries, several other structures were added, with medieval monarchs investing heavily in what was then an important fortress that guarded the Yorkshire coastline, Scarborough's port trade, and the north of England from Scottish or continental invasion. It was fortified and defended during various civil wars, sieges and conflicts, as kings fought with rival barons, faced rebellion and clashed with republican forces, though peace with Scotland and the conclusion of civil and continental wars in the 17th century led to its decline in importance.
Once occupied by garrisons and governors who often menaced the town, the castle has been a ruin since the sieges of the English Civil War, but attracts many visitors to climb the battlements, take in the views and enjoy the accompanying interactive exhibition and special events run by English Heritage.
Scarborough is a town on the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town lies between 10–230 feet (3–70 m) above sea level, rising steeply northward and westward from the harbour on to limestone cliffs. The older part of the town lies around the harbour and is protected by a rocky headland.
With a population of just over 61,000, Scarborough is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. The town has fishing and service industries, including a growing digital and creative economy, as well as being a tourist destination. People who live in the town are known as Scarborians.
The most striking feature of the town's geography is the high rocky promontory pointing eastward into the North Sea. The promontory supports the 11th-century ruins of Scarborough Castle and divides the seafront into two bays, north and south.
The South Bay was the site of the original medieval settlement and harbour, which form the old town. This remains the main tourist area, with a sandy beach, cafés, amusements, arcades, theatres and entertainment facilities. The modern commercial town centre has migrated 440 yards (400 m) north-west of the harbour area and 100 feet (30 m) above it and contains the transport hubs, main services, shopping and nightlife. The harbour has undergone major regeneration including the new Albert Strange Pontoons, a more pedestrian-friendly promenade, street lighting and seating.
A visit to Nothe Fort in Weymouth.
To get here we walk via the Old Harbour South, and up through Nothe Gardens. It is a paid for attraction, and is now a museum.
Nothe Fort is a fort in Weymouth, Dorset, England, situated at the end of the Nothe Peninsula, which juts eastwards from the town of Weymouth, and Weymouth Harbour, into the sea to the north of the ex-military Portland Harbour. The fort is located next to Nothe Gardens.
The coastal defence was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, with Portland then becoming an important Royal Navy base. Shaped like the letter D, the fort was built with bomb-proof casemates and deep magazines. The fort was abandoned in 1956 and purchased by the local council in 1961. It is now a museum and remains one of the best-preserved forts of its kind in the country.
The fort and its outer gateway have been Grade II* listed since 1974. Its fusee steps, located in Nothe Gardens, have been Grade II listed since 2000, and was constructed for hauling trolleys transporting ammunition, spares and stores from the quay to Nothe Fort. In 1978, the Nothe Fort, tramway and searchlight battery at The Nothe, also became scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Coastal fort. Begun c1860, completed 1872, minor additions and alterations in C20. The major construction work was carried out by 50 men of 26 Company, Royal Engineers under Colonel J Hirse. Portland ashlar walls, brick vaults, stone, asphalted, or grassed roofs.
PLAN: a demi-lune with straight entrance wall to the west and a lower contemporary caponier on the southwest corner. The main entrance has a further entrance gateway and tunnel approximately 32 metres to its west. A series of twenty-two casemates at the upper courtyard level, with twelve original gunports, is set above a continuous circuit of magazines and stores. The parapet carries three later 6-inch gun emplacements, one with gun in-situ, and various later additions, including a Bofors repeater and a Second World War observation post (southwest corner).
EXTERIOR: the entrance wall is in a straight run, in fine coursed ashlar to a deep roll-mould heavy parapet, under an earth and grass covering with a series of stone ventilators. The wall sweeps down at the left-hand end, and is raised over the entrance archway, with a small projecting barbican on three heavy stone corbels, and with a series of slits, above an arch with heavy rusticated voussoirs and jambs, containing double-thickness plank doors on massive strap hinges to a segmental head, and a further grillage door to the right, under a 'portcullis' grille. To the left are three small arched openings, and, set low to the right, a plain flush door opening. Far right are three above four small arched openings, then the projecting caponier, with a series of slits immediately below the heavy parapet, and various square openings below.
The seaward walls are in unusually large blocks of stone, up to approximately 2m x 0.9m thick, and with a heavy rock-faced parapet; this is all set to a wide glacis, and a sea wall, which was begun in 1860. The entrance gateway gives to a tunnel with brick transverse barrel vault and stone Welsh vault over heavy rock-faced masonry walls.
The courtyard is surrounded by 22 wide-arched casemates, with heavily rusticated jambs and voussoirs, some with timber-framed glazing, some blocked, with inserted doors and lights. Above the dividing piers were originally 25 square piers, of which eight remain on the north side, and four on the south; these short piers are approximately 0.9mm square, to very heavy moulded caps, some of the work in concrete. They are joined by simple iron rails, which continue round the parapet where piers have gone. On the entrance side a slow ramp leads to the southwest corner.
The gun emplacement on the south side has a ring of 27 heavy iron fixing bolts on a 2m diameter base. The casemates have brick cross-vaults; the deep embrasures to the gun-ports have large splayed voussoirs, plus a lining of thick iron plates. At the lower level is a continuous 'ambulatory', with a series of magazines and other storage rooms or recesses. All is in ashlar, with fine geometrical barrel or groin vaulting of the highest quality. In the northwest corner is a spiral staircase in a brick-lined turret with brick-domed top. The doors to magazines are of massive cast-iron c200mm thick. To the west of the main entry is a free-standing entrance gateway and tunnel in a broad grassed embankment, approached through ramped side walls to a rock-faced wall with arched opening to voussoirs, on a plain plinth, which is carried through the tunnel, approximately10m long, with concrete barrel vault.
This is a characteristically massive piece of construction, but is executed in very accurately cut and jointed work, with very exact geometry to the complex vaulting. The property is now owned and run by Weymouth Civic Society, and opened to the public. A series of photographs, drawings, models and a contemporary newspaper report explain clearly the history and architecture of the building.

This is the front of my schedule/calendar. I was quite confused and sad at that time. It's great to have pictures of my best friends on the cover.
Two books for the year's class schedule, with different departments in each book. Both books were divided into sections for fall and spring semesters. Each semester had a two-page spread for every day of the week. Across the top were class periods, down the left=hand side were departments. You could look up your department and a time slot and clearly see what classes were available then.
This is the Soo Line Railroad ore dock in Ashland and is now scheduled to be torn down this summer. I remember when I was a child ore boats coming in in off the Great Lakes to take on a load of ore and the rail cars filled with iron ore lined up on the dock filling the boats.

I had planned to visit Bray at least twice a year but I failed to maintain this schedule which is a pity but to be honest, with one exception, not much has changed since my last visit. The flood defence project is the exception because the is no doubting the fact that progress has been made since my last visit but considering that it started back in 2012 I am sure that many locals are less than impressed.
The River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme is one of the key capital investment projects by Wicklow County Council and the Office of Public Works (OPW) with an investment of €40 million.
Works on site have been ongoing since 2012. The main contractor was SIAC construction Ltd. who were on site for two years before the company went into examinership. The contract was terminated by agreement following conciliation resulting construction activities effectively being suspended since November 2013.
Wicklow County Council is now continuing the construction with Tom Foley Management Ltd taking on the role of Construction Management Service Provider and back in July 2014, works recommenced on the River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
To date a number of stages have been completed or are ongoing but unfortunately I do not have exact details. However, my photographs may give you some idea as to what has been accomplished to date
The original purpose of the scheme was to protect the town of Bray from flooding from the River Dargle. The Works consisted of the design and construction of flood defences, river widening and regrading along the lower reaches of the River Dargle. The works extended over approximately 3.3 km of the river from the N11 Bridge to the DART Harbour Bridge. The flood defences were required to provide protection against a 1 in 100 year fluvial flood and 1 in 200 year tidal flood. The Works also included the design and construction of 7mx4m culvert adjacent to Bray Bridge, the only vehicular bridge in Bray Town [I did not know that], to act as a fourth arch to the bridge.
The Scheme comprised of a variety of flood defences including construction of new sections of earth embankments, demolition and rebuilding of river walls with extensive stone and timber/timber-type facing, channel excavation and regrading, and river bank strengthening. A range of landscape treatments in and adjacent to the river are proposed to mitigate the impacts of the scheme on the local environment along the river corridor.
If anyone from Bray wishes to comment please to do so.

Besseggen, or Besseggi, is a mountain ridge in Vågå kommune in Oppland county. Besseggen lies east in Jotunheimen, between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet.
The walk over Besseggen is one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. About 30,000 people walk this trip each year. The route over Besseggen starts at Gjendesheim, up to the trails highest point, Veslfjellet (1,743 m), down Besseggen, further over the relatively flat area Bandet (at the foot of Besshø), and ends at Memurubu, where one may take the regularly scheduled ferry route back to Gjendesheim. Many choose to do the hike in the other direction by starting at Memurubu after first taking the ferry there from Gjendesheim. The trip is estimated to take about 5–7 hours to walk without rest stops.
From Besseggen there is a great view over Gjende and Bessvatnet. One of the unique aspects of the view is that Gjende lies almost 400 m lower than Bessvatnet, and while Bessvatnet has a blue color typical of other lakes, Gjende has a distinct green color. The green color is the result from glacier runoff containing clay (rock flour). Looking down towards Memurubu one can see the nearby river Muru coloring the water with a light colored runoff.

*Famed Gospel Choir to Visit Chicago to Promote Cover of Eminem’s “Lose
Yourself”*
“Lose yourself”. It is a mantra that has reverberated among the
elite and the down trodden. Removing the barriers of imposed limitations is
the first step to rising above the muck and mire of life’s troubles. The
award winning Gospel choir Selected of God did just that.
Selected of God began as a group of local singers who wanted to
sing about the love of Christ. They participated in competitions, vying for
a spot in a local television commercial. Since then, the group has received
national notoriety, taking their story of redemption, hope, and recovery
across the globe.
Members of the group will be in Chicago *October
24-25th*promoting their new single “Lose Yourself”. Selected
of God has graced some of the biggest audiences and stages in America from
the 2011 Super Bowl to the Detroit Tigers v Yankees playoff game to a Monday
Night Football performance with soul legend Jimmy Scott. They’ve won an Emmy
for their role in the “Born of Fire: Imported from Detroit” commercial,
worked with some of the best musicians and Gospel performers in the world,
and have embarked on a musical journey that can only be orchestrated by God.
Recently named the Ambassadors of Detroit by Chrysler Motors,
they’ve blazed a trail for others to follow. Selected of God is made
up of teachers,
accountants, nurses, military personnel, hairdressers, even the unemployed,
and created a hodgepodge of people who truly represent the fabric work of
our great country. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Established in 2002 by Pastor and Director Larry Callahan, the
choir had one mission: to share the love of Christ with the world. No other
local choir has made the strides they have in such a short amount of time;
from local to national recognition, Selected of God has sung along-side
gospel greats like Stellar Award winner Kurt Carr and countless others.

On October 1, 2016, in Chicago, IL, Josh Hernandez of Chicago, dominated early and won a second round KO of Tijuana's Juan M. Saldana in a super featherweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds. Hernandez extended his record to 4-0, with an impressive 4 KOs. Saldana dropped to 2-4.
Last year I attended technology events at a rate of about one per week but this year I decided to limit myself to two or three per year as most of the events are of little interest to people who who are not involved with the sectors in question. I decided to attend the Microsoft Ireland Tech Gathering because Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, was scheduled to share his vision on the future of technology.
