The White Giant

The Dortmund Westfalen Hütte - which also has a long history - received its lime from the lime quarries near Lendringsen/Menden in the Sauerland. Here, as scheduled, 216 215 (Kassel depot) ahead of 218 141 from (Hagen-Eckesey depot) before an empty train, which was often particularly long on Saturdays. The local residents called him the “White Giant”. Here on the connecting curve between Schwerte-Heide and Schwerte-Ost. Taken at the time from scaffolding for bridge work on the main line from Holzwickede to Hagen.

The hottest train on Conrail's River Line was TVLA. Scheduled to depart North Bergen at 7:30am, it was usually through CP 5 before 8:00am, and was carded to be interchanged directly to the Santa Fe at Corwith Yard in Chicago by 9:00am the following day. According to my notes, the train pictured here is TVLA-1X. It crossed Overpeck Creek at 9:30am on New Yeasrs Eve, so perhaps it was following the regular TVLA. The trailing Santa Fe and Southern Pacific GEs had led TV-556 the day before and have made a quick turn to head back west.

Stonehenge a Scheduled Ancient prehistoric monument located 2 miles west of Amesbury in Wiltshire.

One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3,000 BC to 2,000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3,100 BC. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first bluestones were raised between 2,400 and 2,200 BC. Another theory suggests the bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3,000 BC.

The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.

Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could have been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains indicate that deposits contain human bone from as early as 3000 BC, when the ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.

In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.

One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.

The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.

I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.

In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.

During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

My Milky Way night sky photography workshops

In 2017, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops in Jackson Hole. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.

My 2017 4-5 day photography workshop schedule:

ANP, Canyonlands & Monument Valley - March 24-29

Icons of the Southwest w/Ryan Smith - April 23-28

Jackson Hole, Wyoming spring - June 21-25

Jackson Hole, Wyoming fall - September 19-23

The great part is that in 2017 I will return to Jackson Hole for the incredible wildflowers throughout the valley and the surrounding mountains.

Do you shoot the Milky Way but need a little help in getting the Milky Way to jump out of your photos ? If so, take a look at my ebook A Photographer's Milky Way Processing Guide - A Photoshop HowTo

First Moderate Risk in South

Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.

A short jaunt down the severe weather risk area that day from Kearney Nebraska. Arrived in Alma Nebraska a tad behind schedule. The storm was already tornado warned and produced a tornado southwest of Alma. Storm was raging and I wasn't in a good place. Had to core punch this storm & headed east via Hwy 136. That's were this collection of images starts.

I was east bound on Hwy 136 that skirts the border of Nebraska / Kansas. This would take me deep into the Moderate Risk for that severe weather day. Instability was visible everywhere out in front of this storm. A Mammatus Cluster with a wall cloud was right in front of me while another supercell was producing tornadoes behind my current location.

Wicked Beautiful Supercell Structure as I got up close & personal. Especially by Franklin Nebraska where I encountered my first Tornado of 2022.

East then north out of Red Cloud Nebraska. The storms were still producing severe weather but was exiting fast out of my range. End this day with a spectacular view of the backside of the storm. A huge mammatus cloud cluster to enjoy as I was heading home!

Tigger on the table after dinner tonight. She (like Bonkers and probably all cats) has her routines and scheduled she must follow. For Tigger, that means jumping on the table after dinner for attention and affection.

Morondava (from Malagasy: morona lava "long coast") is a city located in Menabe Region, of which it is the capital, in Madagascar. It is located in the delta of the Morondava Rive. Its population as of the 2018 census, was 53,510.

The predominant tribe is the Sakalava. But there are also a few Betsileo, Tsimihety, Merina, Makoa and Europeans.

Air Madagascar has regular scheduled flights to Morondava Airport. The main road to town has been renovated recently. With the new road established, a trip from Antananarivo to Morondava by taxi-brousse takes approximately 12 hours. Pirogues are consequently a popular mode of transport used to ferry people and goods along the coast, especially to Morombe.

The city is famous amongst other things for the spectacular Avenue of Baobabs nearby. These giant baobab trees are an 800-year-old legacy of the dense tropical forests that once throve here. Over the years, as the country's population grew, the forests were steadily cut down, leaving only the baobab trees, which the locals preserved for religious reasons. Today, deforestation still continues as large areas of this region, including some of few remaining baobabs, are cleared to make way for sugar cane plantations.

On this day in 69 CE, the accomplished military commander Vespasian entered Rome to claim the title of Imperator, establishing the Flavian Dynasty and overseeing the largest empire the world had ever seen. At the time, the city of Rome was the preeminent bustling metropolis of the ancient world and was home to more than a million people. It would be nearly a half-century before the Empire reached its greatest territorial extents under Trajan I in 117 CE, spanning the entire Mediterranean from modern-day Iberia to Iraq and Scotland to Egypt.

As decorated as Vespasian became, and as incredibly vast as the empire was for its time, both came from humble beginnings. Vespasian was the first Roman Emperor to ascend from the level of commoner through a series of increasing senatorial ranks coupled masterfully with a distinguished military career. Similarly, Rome was once a lowly tribal settlement atop the Capitoline Hill which, over the centuries, grew to cover seven hills and served as the seat of the Roman Republic, and later the vast Roman Empire.

After being commissioned by the Museu da Imaginação to design and build ‘a large, 1m x 2m historical layout of Ancient Rome’ with little more to go off than said prompt, I immediately dove headfirst into the incredibly vast rabbit hole that is Ancient Roman history. Quite early on, I realized the approach to designing something so mindbogglingly vast in such a relatively small window of time would critically depend on having a strict schedule of target deadlines by which to design compartmentalized stages of the overall layout. After all, considering Vespasian or the Roman Empire at the heights of their power would be such an inconceivable notion without having also studied the respective contexts and timeline of events leading to each of their zeniths.

For this reason, the design of the layout was subdivided into eight regional stages and executed over the course of about five weeks between September and November 2019. Not only did this subdivision ease my sleepless nights of nearly being overwhelmed by the commitment, it was also my crossing-the-Rubicon moment when I truly considered this to be something I could commit to accomplishing within the timeframe, without sacrificing any of my signature design rigor. It has always been a creative dream of mine to design a vast, comprehensive city layout in which individual landmarks can be appreciated as integral parts of a much broader historical and cultural landscape. That is why I am immensely grateful to the Museu da Imaginação for commissioning this piece. Not only has it been an incredibly humbling and educational collaboration for myself, but I can rest more easily knowing our efforts will inspire countless guests and museum patrons for years to come. No time to rest on my laurels though! The question now is, “What comes after the Eternal City?”

Last night was the annual Million Mask March through central London. After the troubles last year, such as the burning of a police car there were a lot more police on the streets, and they were much more assertive in dealing with protesters.

The red lines on this guy are focus beams from a TV camera outside the van. I couldn't help thinking it looked like the Terminator had tracked him down!

Covid sucks, but it gives you some time to foam if you feel up for it. I decided to give the Cyclone a try today, as their current schedule is a Wentworth turn up the Madison sub on Tuesdays. I'm not sure why the 1842 got tacked on with the 281 and 725, but I won't complain as this is something you'd see straight out of the early 2000s.

Norfolk Southern SD60 6563 was waiting out the Independence Day holiday tied down in CSX's Mount Clare yard at Gable Avenue in Baltimore in 1992. CSX was running on a holiday schedule and most trains were annulled.

It and another SD60 were the power for the D&H run-through train R403 that was being operated during this time by Canadian Pacific. NS power would show up on this train regularly as would just about anything else out there at the time.

We didn't know how good we actually had it at the time.

PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.

It has been 30 years since the last train rolled past Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Since then, the old station, once scheduled for demolition, has been transformed into one of Canada’s most unique hotels, The Train Station Inn. (was voted one of the top 5 unique hotels in the world).

The Train Station has been restored with three bedrooms, private baths, a parlor, sitting rooms, balcony & kitchenette all in the original Stationmaster's residence on the second floor. On the first floor a railway museum, café & gift shop are in the men's and ladies' waiting rooms as well as the telegraph room.

The final scheduled Deltic departure from King's Cross 40 years ago today is seen at its penultimate stop as the service was terminated on arrival at Grantham due to a broken rail. After running round the stock it formed a 18.58 Grantham - King's Cross but this was terminated at Knebworth due to wheelslip problems and ran ecs to King's Cross assisted by 47 426.

The overnight sleeper failed at Carlisle, a door problem I saw reported. It decanted the unlucky passengers onto the platform, and proceeded to London later in the day. Scheduled to go via Wolverhampton, Stechford, Birmingham International it turned left at Stafford and made some time up on the fast line up the Trent valley. So much so that I only just made it in time.... Thanks to gen providers.

Glastonbury Abbey was a monastery in Glastonbury, Somerset, England. Its ruins, a grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument, are open as a visitor attraction.

The abbey was founded in the 7th century and enlarged in the 10th. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1184 but subsequently rebuilt and by the 14th century was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England. The abbey controlled large tracts of surrounding land and was instrumental in major drainage projects on the Somerset Levels. The abbey was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII of England. The last abbot, Richard Whiting (Whyting), was hanged, drawn and quartered as a traitor on Glastonbury Tor in 1539.

From at least the 12th century the Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of King Arthur, a connection promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was Avalon. Christian legends have claimed that the abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the 1st century.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glastonbury_Abbey

One story goes, that in order to raise extra funds from pilgrims to rebuild the abbey the monks, in 1191, dug to find King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere; and bones from two bodies were raised from a deep grave in, the cemetery on the south side of the Lady Chapel. These bones were reburied, much later, in 1278 within the Abbey Church, in a black marble tomb, in the presence of King Edward I.

Downsview Park Station is one of the six new stations that make up the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension of the Toronto Transit Commission. It is scheduled to open for service towards the end of 2017.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program! After my previous street photo upload, I'm happily back to long exposure monochromes! Only 3 days ago, I was writing about how, lately, I've had no patience for processing and, all of a sudden, I'm back in the game. Funny how these things work!

This week, I've suddenly rediscovered why I just adore b&w photography. There's just such an amazing emotion that is evoked when I look at a really good b&w photo. Yea, I dabble in the odd colour image or two when I'm feeling a little stale, but b&w is really where it's at for me.

This image is probably one of the darker ones I've done and it's inspired by one of the best b&w photographers around these parts - Andy Brown. He is the king of the dark moody monochrome. Do check out his work if you can.

Hope everyone has a rocking weekend ahead!

I have discovered that I have multiple slides exposed at Hotlum, California on July 23, 1988. As the memory banks fade a bit, I have to go with data written on the slides to fill in the blanks. Here are two crops of Southern Pacific's hot PTLAT (Portland Terminal's Lake Yard to Los Angeles Trailers) rolling through Hotlum from that day.

On this date, my first shot was up at Worden, a couple of miles north of the state line. I caught my friend Phil Gosney running Amtrak 14, roughly on schedule based on the lighting in the image. Following that, I drove down to Cougar and caught a rerouted lumber drag from the embargoed Modoc Line there. Afterward, I went to Hotlum siding and captured several images. Based upon the sun angles, my guess is that the dispatcher used Andesite siding to park the lumber drag I had shot earlier at Cougar, allowing this PTLAT to pass.

This is the full frame crop. Off in the distance, you can see Oregon's Mt. McLoughlin. It is almost 70 miles north of Hotlum. Mark Hemphill, the cantilever at the SP east end of the siding is also in view.

It is moderately amazing to me that these photos are now three and a half decades old. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Who doesn't love a long horseback ride through diverse landscapes, ending up camping for the night ? That's what was on the ranch's schedule this week ! We had a few reservations for the hike so we left at six.

In the morning at 8 o'clock sharp, the hikers arrived with the necessary, that is to say bottles of water, sandwiches and that's it! The rest was provided by the ranch. We have a large tent that can hold four people, and we had taken another smaller one for us, the two organizers. Without forgetting the food for the horses, of course !

We made the presentations of the horses to the riders then we started to prepare them, they had already been fed and were waiting, like us, to leave for the adventure.

9:30 am we left ! We had taken two mules to transport the bulk of the load, the rest had been placed in the saddlebags of the horses.

We started with a magnificent forest then we crossed mountains and valleys, countryside and rivers, where we stopped to eat around noon. After we all rested for two good hours, we left around 2:30 p.m., on the way to our next destination, the campsite where we will sleep the night before leaving the next morning.

We arrived there around 7 p.m., of course we took a few breaks because 4 hours on horseback is a long time, even for them ! We hitched up the horses and unsaddled them before setting up the camp. The tents were up and the business installed, we only had to make a temporary paddock for the horses, so that they could move, eat and sleep during the night, there was a small stream where they could quench their thirst. .

The campfire had been lit and we had settled around, ready to tell stories while enjoying good roasted marshmallows! It promises to be a good evening !

A Scheduled Ancient Monument and probably the oldest bridge to cross the River Stour is reputedly also the oldest bridge in Dorset, but who knows!

What is known are references to the building of "A Bridge on the River Stour adjacent to the White Mill" in the year 1175 and that during an investigation of the foundations on which it stands, there are timber pilings which have been carbon dated to the twelfth century. There is also a record from 1341 showing three shillings bequeathed for bridge repairs.

The basic construction of what you see here, somewhat updated by the Victorians and again repaired in more recent times, probably dates from the 16th century.

Delays with the Train Schedule...

DRS Class 66, No 66425 Nigel J Kirchstein, working the daily Tesco container train, slows to a stop at the southern end of the double track main line to await the passage of a north bound service.

On the day before the Inspection Train's scheduled run, the train was sent from the MNR Croton Harmon Shop to Grand Central Terminal to be ready for the morning trip. For this leg, MNCW 201 (Conrail/NYS) led, seen passing through CP 12 in the Bronx, New York.

The President's Train Goes To New Haven. On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, MTA Metro-North Railroad operated an Inspection Train with wrapped heritage units MNCW 201 (Conrail/MTA) and 208 ("Beachball") and its 3 office cars. The cars are in fact old, one former New York Central and the other two former Lackawanna Railroad. The locomotives are contemporary models, but "wrapped" in the paint scheme of predecessor railroads. The train headed up the New Haven Line to New Haven-State Street, where the train then went around the loop for the return trip to Grand Central Terminal, giving railroad executives and management the opportunity to inspect many ongoing, completed, and needed improvements on the line.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.

From now on # I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

April 10th

Our parkade was scheduled for cleaning so I had to be out early. I decided to head just West of the city to see what I could. I did see a few bluebirds but was delighted when a Great Gray Owl perched itself beside the highway!

Thanks for your visits!

To see the paucity of fuelling facilities that we encountered almost daily explains much about how our working day was sometimes extended by the delay in getting ten buses refuelled. But on Day 3 the two hundred miles to cover involved good roads and no mechanical issues to delay us so with a 9.00am departure we covered the ninety miles to this main stop of the day near Auxerre in just over two and a half hours. Even with the fuelling downtime we would arrive at our overnight stop ahead of schedule and in full daylight making it the least arduous day of the trip.
