Jatropha scaposa or J. macrophylla. Plants look like J. scaposa (scape-like inflorescence, like in the picture) in the dry season and turn into J. macrophylla in the rainy season. My conclusion is that J. scaposa is the dry season form of J. macrophylla (the older name). Both species are conspecific and, in that case, the correct name is J. macrophylla. I harvested the garlic scapes (flower buds) from my garlic today and made pesto. Delicious!! It's a good idea to cut the scapes off because it makes the garlic put more energy into the bulb, so you get more garlic. Plus the scapes are absolutely delicious, it's worth growing garlic just for the scapes.
Garic Scape Pesto
- A couple handfuls of garlic scapes
- A couple handfuls of basil
- About 1/2 cup toasted pecans
- About 1/4 cup parmigiano-reggiano cheese
- A few TBSP olive oil
- Sea salt to taste
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste as you go, start off with a small amount of oil and add more to taste.
