Our first effort at growing garlic produced some unexpected results, scapes! Used tonight in Heidi Swanson's Garlic Scape Soup from SuperNatural Cooking.

What I found on a slow walk around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Sunday Jan 27, 2013.
The artwork was conceived by Zamora for the 6th SCAPE Public Art Christchurch Biennial in 2010, however its installation was halted in the early stages of construction by the Christchurch earthquakes. Following the earthquakes, the original location in Victoria Square became inaccessible and the artist, having survived the 1986 Mexico City earthquake personally, was sensitive to how Christchurch people might feel about the artwork and its tumbled appearance. The passage of time, and a new location in the lake next to the Information Centre and children’s playground in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, have allowed both the artist and SCAPE Public Art to be satisfied that the artwork is situated in a fitting space and that its message will be received as intended by the artist; as a comment on construction and urbanism in local culture.

Almost 60 years ago, collector and horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public.
In his later years, du Pont wrote:
I sincerely hope that the Museum will be a continuing source of inspiration and education for all time, and that the gardens and grounds will of themselves be a country place museum where visitors may enjoy as I have, not only the flowers, trees and shrubs, but also the sunlit meadows, shady wood paths, and the peace and great calm of a country place which has been loved and taken care of for three generations.

Elephant Garlic Scape
Starting earlier this week, scapes (unopened bulbil-pods) have been popping up out to the tops of each garlic plant. These scapes we pick by hand almost daily over the course of a few weeks. By picking the scapes, we encourage the plant’s energy to grow bigger bulbs.
Our favorite preparation is to steam the scapes till tender and serve with butter, lemon and white pepper. They are very mild tasting when steamed, slightly artichoke like in texture and flavor.
