Scale and office of the Smoky Valley Roller Mill at Old Mill Park in Lindsborg Kansas. The scale on the right was used to weigh grain and the mill office was to the left of the scale.

Built in 1898 and was in operation until the 1950's. It was restored to full working order in 1981. Instead of using stones to grind grain this mill used a series of corrugated steel rollers. This type of mill became known as the "grand daddy of the modern mill" and was important with the introduction of hard winter wheat in the 1870's. It took 4-6 people to operate the mill.

National Register #72001451. Added in 1972.

Barnacle scale, Ceroplastes cirripediformis, and an ant on a guava tree in Waimanalo, Hawaii.

Steve and I visited Indonesia for the first time in May 2018 for ten days. We made stops in Jakarta and Yogyakarta (both in Java) and Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara/ Flores. We saw friends from graduate school, and visited mosques, cathedrals, and ancient temples. We swam with fishes, manta rays, and even baby sharks. We saw amazing sunrises and endlessly beautiful sunsets. Indonesia is a generous, wonderful, and stunningly gorgeous place, and we will be glad to visit again sometime soon.

Scale models of thirteen designs from Proposta per un'autoprogettazione ('Proposal for a self-design'), 1973

Enzo Mari, Elio Mari

Wood, metal

A radical proposal

Perhaps Mari's most overt attempt to democratise design and subvert the market was his seminal project Proposta per un'autoprogettazione ('Proposal for a self-design'). He devised instructions for the self-design of 19 models of furniture comprising only wooden boards and nails, using the simplest carpentry techniques. Mari published them as a catalogue, available to any individual for the price of postage. Later, a few of the technical drawings were distributed through manufacturer Simon International. Of the project, he said: 'In 1974, I thought that if people were encouraged to build a table, for example, with their own hands, they would be able to better understand the underlying thinking that has gone into it.' Today this project is recognised as an important precursor to the open-source movement.*

From the exhibition

Enzo Mari

(March – September 2024)

This major exhibition celebrates the life and work of one of the greatest Italian designers of the 20th century, Enzo Mari, whose designs have inspired generations of creatives around the world)

Not only one of the 20th century’s most significant designers, Mari was also an artist, teacher, theorist, and more. During his prolific career, he created countless enduring and timeless designs, filling the homes and streets of the Milanese and beyond. An outspoken critic of the design industry, his uncompromising belief in the social responsibility of design resonates powerfully today, as we face ecological and ethical issues with ever greater urgency.

This unmissable retrospective which was produced and presented by Triennale Milano in 2020, spans Mari’s 60-year career and brings together hundreds of his projects, ranging from furniture, children’s books and games, product and graphic design, to more conceptual installation-based works. Archival material provides greater insight into Mari’s research process, and the key principles that guided and unified his work.
