Tree scale is caused by the digestion of usually rotting wood by scores of different fungal species. As the fungi digest the wood these scales develop on the outer surface of the wood. The scales vary greatly in size color and shape and some can become quite beautiful with alternating layers of color. This series taken at the Broughtons Wildlife Education Area near Marietta Ohio in Dec 2014
The scales were lit with an SB900, zoomed 200mm,hand held and pointed directly in the centre. Exposure compensation set to -2 to keep some detail in the window.

Some info on Scale insects from Wikipedia:
The scale insects are small insects of the order Hemiptera, generally classified as the superfamily Coccoidea. There are about 8,000 species of scale insects.
Most scale insects are parasites of plants, feeding on sap drawn directly from the plant's vascular system. Scale insects vary dramatically in their appearance from very small organisms (1-2 mm) that occur under wax covers (some look like oyster shells), to shiny pearl-like objects (about 5 mm), to creatures covered with mealy wax.
