This is Idahoa scapigera, the only genus named for the state of Idaho. In about 10 days this tiny brassica flower will produce a pod about the size and shape of large lentil. The maroon striped pod is much more showy than the flower.

Tree scale is caused by the digestion of usually rotting wood by scores of different fungal species. As the fungi digest the wood these scales develop on the outer surface of the wood. The scales vary greatly in size color and shape and some can become quite beautiful with alternating layers of color. I decided to watch Bay to Breakers 2024 while my friends went on a completely separate 30+ mile run starting from Bolinas Ridge. There were far fewer naked people than the legends had me believe. Costumes tended to repeat as well.
I probably should have gone out with a longer lens. I ended up having to heavily crop many images. The people were just too far away most of the time. I needed to stand at the end of a slight bend in the road to get head on shots of people, but they were incredibly far away at that point.
