There was a mist along the seafront which gave an eerie, mysterious atmosphere. As I was composing the image this figure walked into the frame, but I think he gives added interest and scale

The Pier was designed and engineered by Eugenius Birch to attract visitors and survive in the hostile environment of the seashore. Opened in 1866, it was a simple and functional structure built using dozens of cast iron threaded columns screwed into the seabed and strengthened by a lattice of ties and girders that provide the necessary strength to support the promenade deck whilst allowing seas to pass harmlessly through.

Originally the West Pier had an open deck with only six small ornamental houses of oriental design, two toll houses and glass screens at the pier head to protect visitors from the wind and sun. In 1875 a central bandstand was added. In the 1880's weather screens the full length of the pier, steamer landing stages and a large pier head pavilion were constructed.

The final building, completed in 1916, was a graceful concert hall. The result is seaside architecture at its finest, designed to attract and entertain holiday-makers with all the pomp and frippery that is the essence of the English seaside resort. The pier was unique in being largely unaltered since that time, its proportions and style were unrivalled and its concert hall and theatre were two of the best Victorian and Edwardian seaside entertainment buildings.

On 28th March 2003the Pavilion was destroyed in an arson attack, and then on 11th May the Concert Hall, already seriously damaged in a huge storm the previous December, was also deliberately set on fire.

English Heritage was commissioned to report on whether after such damage, the restoration was still viable. It concluded that despite the significant damage, given the wealth of salvaged material from the pier and the considerable photographic and video archive, repair and reconstruction of the pier was still viable. It was therefore bitterly disappointing that at its meeting on 28th January, the Heritage Lottery Fund decided to withdraw its funding of the project.

With the loss of lottery funding the restoration of the West Pier became impossible. Deemed a public hazard, the burnt-out Concert Hall was removed in 2010. The skeletal remains of The Pavilion, however, were left to become a feature of Brighton’s seafront. Its desolate beauty makes it much discussed, wondered about and photographed. The Trust has no intention of removing the remains unless overwhelming safety issues arise. But now beyond repair, they will inevitably degenerate and be reclaimed by nature. However the Trust remains hopeful that, with the success of Brighton i360, in due course a new contemporary West Pier, reflecting the brilliance of the original, will be built.

A veil of morning fog drapes the rolling hills of Hawke’s Bay, softening the landscape into layers of muted greens and greys. Golden light catches the tops of scattered trees, their winter leaves glowing warmly against the cool mist. The scene is serene and ethereal, with the lone poplar in the foreground standing as a quiet sentinel, guiding the eye towards the gentle rise of the hill and the distant silhouettes fading into the haze. It’s a fleeting moment where light, land, and atmosphere blend into a tranquil harmony.

The other working title is don't put that in your mouth, you don't know where it's been. Lots of editing with this image, tooth whitening, cloning out hairs a good deal of blurring. Trying to get the focus right and my face centered proved challenging too. We'll call it good for the day and move forward.

As the new year approaches, I thought it would be time for another forced perspective shot of Ruby, my 1/18th scale model 1930 Alfa Romeo parked by the bird pond in our retirement village. She will be 95 years old in the new year - older than most of the residents in the retirement village here!

Ruby looks great from any angle, but the rear view highlights many little details including the instruments on the dashboard which feature real metal chromed surrounds and actual glass faces over the dials. Those wonderful spoke wheels are all removable by undoing the spinner lock. She has real rubber Pirelli branded tyres (tires), and they even feature an air valve - a tiny detail I have not found on many of my other model cars of this scale.

What really stands out for me is the fact that back then (the 1930s) they had the wisdom to include two spare wheels. I know roads would have been rougher back then and tyre quality would not have been as good as today's modern tyres, but it is a stark reminder that these days we are lucky if we get any spare wheel at all. You might get a space saver if you are lucky - most of which can only be used on the rear - but the current trend is to give you a can of spray (useless if you get a gash in the sidewall of the tyre). All so they can save weight to meet fuel efficiency standards.

Most people are probably lucky enough to go through their motoring lives without ever having a puncture, but somehow, I have managed to have at least 50 since I started driving 45 years ago. Give me a full size spare tyre any day. Space savers and repair kits are only good for around 80km before you must find a dealer and have the tyre properly repaired. Fine if you live in a city and are near dealers who can help, but hopeless for rural folks who may be a long way from any tyre retailer or may be on an overnight journey.

The moral of the story from car manufacturers (and government regulators) today is - "please get a flat tyre in cities or towns only, and preferably during business hours.....we have graciously included this advice for your convenience!"

End of rant - I feel better now! ; )

Mağlova Aqueduct. The Byzantine water supply system of Constantinople was developed in the mid-4th century. The system's scale and complexity is a testament to Byzantine engineering and its ability to manage water resources effectively.

Even after the Ottoman conquest, the system was maintained and expanded, with the Aqueduct of Valens receiving particular attention.

This handsome specimen is a green iguana, which is likely an introduced species to the Caribbean island of Curacao, where I photographed it as it basked contently. Aside from the cool eye, you can easily make out the tympanum, which is the lizard's eardrum, just below and to the left of the eye. Below that is a large, white scale, known as the subtympanic shield, naturally.

Una Peaks (747 m), Renard Island, Antarctic Peninsula.

Named after Una Spivey, a member of staff in the Governor's Office in Stanley, Falkland Islands in the 1950's. It can be found on many maps as Una's Tits, also as Cape Renard Towers .

The tallest tower has only been summited once; by a German team in 1999.

A sunset at Praia da Ursa ("Bear's Beach") is something that you won’t forget easily. This blue hour shot was taken two years ago on a hot summer day. The light changed dramatically from a gorgeous golden tone (see previous uploaded photo) to a beautiful light purple. One person stood at seaside, contemplating the view, which conveniently gives you a scale to the scene, as the sea stacks are effectively huge.

Praia da Ursa ("Bear's Beach") is located on the Portuguese Atlantic west coast just north of Cabo da Roca (just a few km distant from Cascais or Sintra). This beach is a litle and less well known gem. Unspoilt and wild, it is often cited as the most beautiful in the area and one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Its name comes from the "Rocha da Ursa" (bear rock) one of two huge sea stacks at the northern end of the beach. It is said that the rock resembles a bear with its cub.

Access is difficult, to say the least. The descent is done by foot down a steep sided valley with plenty of loose rocks under foot. That is certainly the reason it stays off the beaten track (fortunately!).

The strains of the route are more than justified by the superb landscape that awaits with the enormous rocky formations dominating the beach.

As Cal was walking behind the Aston Martin DB9, he couldn't help but glance at the sunset catching the classic lines of the old DB5 parked alongside. He briefly got so excited, he even reached for the gun which has made a sudden appearance in his holster! Clearly he watches too many movies!

Not quite a forced perspective, but let's just call it model photography, featuring the 1/18th scale die-cast Aston Martin DB9, and the wonderful Aston Martin DB5, and of course, Cal - my new model employee! Background is a sunset from Big Hill in Stawell, Victoria.

This is technically a single shot, and no photoshop was used or harmed in the production of this image or to insert the background (apart from minor tweaks to overall brightness)!

The Liberty Historic District is located in the small community of Liberty (population of 374 in 2019) in rural western Dekalb County in Middle Tennessee. The District was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places under criteria A & C for its association with the Sparta-Lebanon center for the surrounding farms in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and as a fine collection of vernacular architecture dating between the 1820's and 1930's. When Liberty's small scale vernacular architecture is combined with its narrow tree-lined streets, rock walls and stone fences, outbuildings, and surrounding farmland, the feeling of a nineteenth to early twentieth century community is readily conveyed. Located at 375 East Main Street, this is the Organ House built circa 1890 with its Greek Revival architecture. This house is listed on the original documents submitted to the NRHP as inventory item #65 and includes a great description of the details of the house. The historic district, including the Organ House, was added to the registry on June 25, 1987. More information about the historic district (and that description of this house) can be viewed on those original documents located here:

It's a dismal, damp afternoon in Holland, Michigan, but that doesn't stop the bustling Louis Padnos Iron & Metal Co off of S. River Street. A Kenworth W900 leaves the yard on another run for scrap to feed the bustling plant. Farther inside, CSX's Y121 job based out of nearby Waverly Yard is in the process of weighing up outbound cars on the scale. Gondolas from the Missouri Pacific nearing a half century in age are part of today's train, inevitably serving their final years in the unforgiving scrap industry. The CSX 6461 was built in February of 1978 for the B&O, rolling off the line in the famous Chessie System paint scheme.

At Repondek Railroad Company's Yankeetown dock facility, they still operate two of the three Yankeetown Dock Co. SD38-2s.

Built in November of 1972 to replace a small fleet of aging Fairbanks-Morse locomotives hauling coal trains on a built-for- purpose, 20-mile line in Southwestern Indiana, they have never strayed. Both 20 and 21 are used mostly for moving cars around the yard or dumper.

Even in 2017, when this was taken, RRC 21 still wears it's YDC paint from the late 80's. Looking closely, the picture shown by the employee is of YDC 1976 (YDC 21) wearing a bicentennial livery in 1976. Both it and 20 (a corner of which can be seen) have each worn at least three paint schemes just for Yankeetown Dock alone.

I have an affinity for coal mine locomotives and have collected slides and researched the lineage of many that once operated in the Midwest. I even bought a pair of the Scale Trains SD38-2s they had painted for Yankeetown Dock Co.

Coprinus comatus, the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales—this is the origin of the common names of the fungus. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores (hence the “ink cap” name). This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores. Wikipedia

The 1930's Ford V8 was Clyde Barrow's favorite car to steal. So much so that he wrote this letter to Henry Ford.

Handwritten on paper: Tulsa, Okla 10th April Mr Henry Ford Detroit, Mich. Dear Sir: - While I still have got breath in my lungs I will tell you what a dandy car you make. I have drove Fords exclusively when I could get away with one. For sustained speed and freedom from trouble the Ford has got ever other car skinned and even if my business hasen't been strickly legal it don't hurt enything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V8 - Yours truly Clyde Champion Barrow

Well it just doesn't get any better than this and my thanks to WCR for making this happen today. The start of the 'Christmas Santa' runs from Lancaster-Carlisle and back could not have got off to a better start. Yes the weather could have been better but at least it was dry. With hardly a breath of wind the sound of the two engines could be heard working hard well before the two ex LMS loco's came into view and what a sight they made. At the front single chimney Jubilee Class No 45562 'Alberta', (really No 45699 'Galatea') given a new identity and livery of a former long gone classmate, with Royal Scot Class No 46115 'Scots Guardsman' double heading over Shap seen here at High Scales. The exhaust just hung in the air long after the pair had stormed through a marvellous sight on Shap. It was great to see Andrew Southwell, David Horner and Michael Anderson at this location today one to remember!

Humayun's tomb (Persian: Maqbara-i Humayun) is the tomb of Emperor Mirza Nasir al-Din Muhammad commonly known as Humayun situated in Delhi, India.[1] The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum under her patronage[2][3][4][5][6] in 1558, and designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad,[7] Persian architects chosen by her.[8][9] It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent,[10] and is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, close to the Dina-panah Citadel, also known as Purana Qila (Old Fort), that Humayun found in 1538. It was also the first structure to use red sandstone at such a scale. (article) In Wikipedia (current version) en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Humayun%27s_Tomb&o...

Liberty, commonly known as Liberty's, is a luxury department store in London, England. It is located on Great Marlborough Street in the West End of London.

The vast mock-Tudor store also sells men's, women's and children's fashion, beauty and homewares from a mix of high-end and emerging brands and labels.

The emporium was designed by Edwin Thomas Hall and his son, Edwin Stanley Hall. They designed the building at the height of the 1920s fashion for Tudor revival. The shop was engineered around three light wells that formed the main focus of the building. Each of these wells was surrounded by smaller rooms to create a homey feel. Many of the rooms had fireplaces and some still exist.

The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner was very critical of the building's architecture, saying: "The scale is wrong, the symmetry is wrong. The proximity to a classical façade put up by the same firm at the same time is wrong, and the goings-on of a store behind such a façade (and below those twisted Tudor chimneys) are wrongest of all".

Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon Welsh pronunciation: [kastɛɬ kaɨrˈnarvɔn]) – often anglicised as Carnarvon Castle or Caernarvon Castle – is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. It was a motte-and-bailey castle from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began to replace it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales, and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past, and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby. Wikipedia

Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron

Achtung! Jetzt wir singen zusammen die Geschichte

Uber dem schweinkomischen Hund und dem lieben Red Baron!

After the turn of the century

In the clear blue skies over Germany

Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard

Like the screamin' sound of a big war bird

Up in the sky, a man in a plane

Baron von Richthofen was his name

Eighty men tried, and eighty men died

Now they're buried together on the countryside

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more

The bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score

Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree

Of the bloody Red Baron of Germany

In the nick of time, a hero arose

A funny-looking dog with a big black nose

He flew into the sky to seek revenge

But the Baron shot him down -

"Curses, foiled again!"

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more

The bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score

Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree

Of the bloody Red Baron of Germany

Now, Snoopy had sworn that he'd get that man

So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan

He challenged the German to a real dogfight

While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight

That bloody Red Baron was in a fix

He'd tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks

Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice

And that bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more

The bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score

Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree

Of the bloody Red Baron of Germany

Well, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more

The bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score

Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree

Of the bloody Red Baron of Germany

- Dick Holler / Philip Gernhard

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Return of the Red Baron

You remember that baron flying high in the sky

When Snoopy shot him down with a gleam in his eye

But that German had leaped from his blood red plane

Just before it burst into a ball of flame

Snoopy circled back, checked his kill

Saw that bloody Red Baron standing high on a hill

Then he swooped down low, shouted, "Curse you, Red Baron!"

The German shook his fist. You could hear him swear

Hey, watch out, there, Snoopy. You're really in a mess

You thought you were through with that bloody Red Baron

But it looks like he's not down, yet

Then a cry went up all over the land

The bloody Red Baron would strike again

But, brave, little Snoopy said, "Never fear"

As he headed for his plane, all the people cheered

Hey, watch out, little Snoopy. You're really in a mess

You thought you were through with that bloody Red Baron

But it looks like he's not down, yet

Snoopy blazed a trail straight across the sea

Searching in vain for his enemy

Then he found that German trying to fix his plane

A-sweatin' and a-flustered, about to go insane

Snoopy landed for a pistol duel

The Baron was worried; Snoopy was cool

He fired a shot, missed, started to run

Before Snoopy had a chance to raise his gun

Hey, watch out, Red Baron. Snoopy is on your trail

One of these days, he's gonna make you pay, and you'll go straight to

Well, watch out, Red Baron. Snoopy is on your trail

One of these days, he's gonna make you pay, and you'll go straight to...

Harpa is one of Reykjavik‘s greatest and distinguished landmarks. It is a cultural and social centre in the heart of the city and features stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the North Atlantic Ocean. Harpa is an enchanting destination for intrigued travellers and its grand-scale award-winning architecture has attracted 5 million guests since its opening, May 4, 2011.

I really liked Legohaulic's Arena Competitor, so I did this.

It's also my entry for the NPU contest.

This was taken at the famous feeder at the Virginia Lakes Resort, so high in the Sierras that Gray-Crowned Rosy Finches are frequent visitors. Cassin's finches are also known in the area, I've seen them at that very feeders, and purple finches also come to that altitude although I haven't seen them in that spot. So... I'm asking the experts - purple finch or Cassin's finch? The experts at inaturalist say "Pale male Cassin's", even the bird is lacking the usual bright red Cassin's "cap", but I'm still not sure.

And so Tuor beheld a vision of Gondolin, once so beautiful and fair, now broken and covered in red hot flames and thick black smoke.

~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~

They told me not to build all of Gondolin, so I had to scale down and just do the King's Square, with the images of the two trees upon King Turgon's Tower, which fell and caused his own death.

Ecthelion also, of the Fountain, faces Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, with the spike upon his helmet. From the battle, Tuor the messenger of Ulmo, with his young child Eärendil, the hope of Elves and Men, just barely escapes. But that is for another time.

I’ve wanted to do a minifigure battle for so long. I felt like finally I had enough figs! I figured out I was wrong, but still, I did put a lot of figures into this… and that consumed more time than you would expect! And finally, this is the second full castle that I've ever made. Yes, it's the first full minifigure scale castle or keep that I've ever made! It was an immense endeavour, especially for just a couple weeks.

This is my entry to the Finale of MELO, which I am honoured to be able to compete in! I attempted to recreate each scene from a different book throughout the competition, thus this one is meant to be derived from the recent book, The Fall of Gondolin. I tried my best to make this version of the Palace of Gondolin resemble fair Tirion Upon Tuna, from the Undying Lands, as well as to capture the horrible moment of it's fearful betrayal and fall, while the last of the Greatest Noldor fought bravely and desperately to the last. I hope you like it! To God be all the Glory!

Where's Waldo? Carrying my first digital camera with me, there wasn't much I could do with a scene like this. Even if I had had a longer lens, I'm not sure what I would have done. Besides, to get to the climbers, I'd have to get around this 30k ton boulder.

Anyway, this still doesn't do much for scale, but that's one big 8,400 foot mountain near Olmsted Point in the eastern part of Yosemite Valley. For those of you who don't know about Yosemite, it is a climbing mecca. I could have climbed this in ... I dunno, a lifetime. Yet, El Capitan was climbed in 2 hours 23 minutes! El Cap is 7k feet and sheer!

and sometimes you can't help but feel lost

Skógafoss is one of the largest and well known falls in Iceland, it's sheer power as it crashes over the sea cliffs has to be seen to be appreciated, if you walk anywhere near toward the bottom of it it's like being in an industrial power shower, and the noise is truly incredible.

The one downside of this place is such is its beauty it's can get very busy, during the day coaches are pulling in all the time with tourists eager to get their selfie sticks out and generally run all over the place like out of control ants. This was the case on this day, I was over here with a few friends and I simply couldn't get the shot I wanted due to rain and the aforementioned ant swarm... they all wanted to go and do a snow mobile tour over the glacier and were getting a bit impatient with my requests to spend a long time at each location which to be honest if you aren't a photographer I totally get! So I told them to leave me here for 5 hours while they went and did that and then come back and find me later....

5 hours may seem a long time but that's 5 hours I've got to get my shots and also to have a good explore of the area well past the top of the falls.

The time went in no time and I got several shots I liked with hardly anyone around (I've included a single 'ant' for scale here), plus some others in locations rarely shot way back along the River Skoga.

I can't believe how long ago this was now, and that I've never posted it up here.

Naturally, it chooses the décor. :)

This is a tiny 1:12 scale replica of the Vitra Eames House Bird, which was designed by Charles and Ray Eames and popular in the 1950s. It's made from resin and has incredibly skinny metal legs. Its tail and legs form a perfect tripod and help to make it surprisingly stable. The armchair and cushion are also dolls house scale. The cushion is just about 1" square.

Five large-scale sculptures by Polish American artist Olga Ziemska have been created exclusively for an exhibition, Of the Earth, at The Morton Arboretum.

The exhibition explores the artist’s expression and philosophy that, she says, “We are nature.” Ziemska said that her aim is to remind people that “everything in life is derived from the same basic elements that form everything in nature, including ourselves. There is no separation.” In Polish, Ziemska means “of the earth.”

The artist’s work was created from reclaimed and pruned tree branches and other natural materials gathered from various locations throughout the Arboretum’s 1,700 acres. “I am giving reclaimed natural materials a new life and transforming them from nature into new forms,” Ziemska said.

This is the largest exhibition to date for Ziemska, who lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. Ziemska has exhibited and created public installations in Poland, Taiwan, Italy, South Korea, Mexico, and other locations globally in a career spanning more than 20 years. Her work entwines and melds the human body with other natural forms, which she notes, “reminds us of our own physicality of seamless connection to the earth and nature.”

Union Pacific's star attraction, Engine 4014, also known as "Big Boy" was heading back to his home town, Cheyenne, Wyoming last Sunday morning.

Emmy the Clipper was sitting by the tracks to greet him as he passed through Julesburg, Colorado. Big Boy whistled at her as he went by.

If you look closely, you can see the Engineer and Fireman are leaning out of the cab to get a look.

Careful planning was required to capture this one. Emmy's "mark" was figured out in mid June during a scouting run.

Ken did the math to figure out what our shutter speed was needed to be to stop a 1.2 million pound locomotive. He nailed it!

Emmy the Clipper is 1:1 scale and was built by Packard of Detroit

Big Boy is just 1:1 scale and was built by American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, NY

The ship is now nearly complete! Might make a few minor modifications still so it's not 100% yet.

Alresford, Hampshire

Having visited Stonehenge and Salisbury on the Friday, early Saturday morning we headed across country to Four Marks to visit friends who live there. It's always a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere whenever we meet up and the order of the weekend is always take things as they come, which we all adhere to as a gospel rule!

So the afternoon activity was nothing more than taking Todd the dog for a walk culminating at a pub in Alresford... a much supported plan.

I did take my camera but photography was not the order of the day, as friendship is higher on my scale of priorities. However, I did take a few and these are somewhat different from my usual photostream, but change is good. The barley shots are more of an opportunistic moment as I don't live in an area with such vistas. There aren't too many thou as Todd the dog thought the game was to photo bomb my efforts or at the very least run amongst the barley ruining the carpet effect I was trying to capture. Much to his owner's dismay, a "Fenton the dog You Tube" moment if ever there was one!
