I let Azizi clamber over some very new, very hard cherry tomatoes (room temp) to show how tiny he is. He's supposed to eat fruit but like most Tenrec owners, they are faddy so any fruit and veg has to be fed via the bugs! It's called gut loading and it ensures that my 6 quilled wonders get all the nutrients they need.

"A Different Kind Of Love"
I've seen different kinds of light
In many different people
Through many different signs
And on the surface
I've walked away a thousand times
Every time I thought I would do something right
I've known a different kind of love
The one you're frightened of
And wish you'd never known
But I don't want
To run away without a fight
I thought I would do something right
You've built the walls around you
'Cause you're so afraid to fail
They seem to almost reach the sun
And far too high to scale
You've built the walls around you
Is it all about them now?
Still you make believe that it's alright
I've seen different kinds of light
In many lovers' eyes
As if they fear to shine
Below the surface
I've walked the shadows of my mind
Every time I wish I could do something right
I've known a different kind of love
The kind that makes you whole
A place where roots have grown
And I don't want
To run away into the night
I wish I could do something right
You've built the walls around you
'Cause you're so afraid to fail
They seem to almost reach the sun
And far too high to scale
You've built the walls around you
Is it all about them now?
Still you make believe that it's alright
It's alright (You've built the walls around you)
('Cause you're so afraid to fail)
It's alright (They seem to almost reach the sun)
(And far too high to scale)
It's alright (You've built the walls around you)
(Is it all about them now?)
It's alright (Still you make believe that it's alright)

A tighter crop on a beautiful sunrise in Canmore AB. Mt. Lawrence Grassi, Ha Ling Peak and Ship's Prow reflected in Policeman's Creek.
Mount Lawrence Grassi is named for an Italian miner, who emigrated to the country in 1912. In addition to his career as a miner, he was an avid climber and became well-known and well-respected as a climbing guide at the time.
Mt. Ha Ling is named for the intrepid Chinese cook that first scaled its intimidating summit in 1896, who climbed it on a bet. This prominent peak is situated between Mt. Rundle and the Three Sisters and is over 2408 meters.
So much beauty in the Canadian Rockies.
I'm off to visit my 93 year-old father and other family members I've not seen for over a year. Many hugs ahead!
Thanks for taking a look. Always appreciated!

This shot was taken way back in 2014 on a glorious May morning. It was only my second ascent of the infamous Sharp Edge up Blencathra, and my first attempt in the dark which made it even more exhilarating. It was a beautiful morning in every respect. It's not often you can stand at this altitude at that time of the morning in a t-shirt, but it was so temperate and calm that I did with ease. The photography conditions were perfect as there was a small gap on the horizon between the hilltops of the distant North Pennines and the layer of cloud above. This 'letterbox' (as I think it's known by other photographers) allowed the sun to appear momentarily before disappearing again. The light only lasted for a minute or two, but it was definitely worth it.

A scene from my S scale model railroad.
As the early morning sunlight streamed in through my basement window I quickly grabbed this shot of my naturally illuminated model railroad.
Notice how dark this garter snake's scales are. We've been about fifteen degrees below normal for the past several days and being cold-blooded, snakes darken up their skin so they're able to absorb more heat if they can find some sunshine to soak up.
Vladimir Tatlin was a Russian artist and architect. After the 1917 Revolution, V.I.Lenin tasked him with replacing Tsarist monuments with ones expressing revolutionary ideals.
Tatlin’s proposed tower was an abstract iron and glass sculpture 400m tall (Eiffel tower is 300m). The tower's axis tilted parallel to that of Earth's.
The monument was to be the headquarters of the Comintern, the international grouping of Communist parties. A lower glass cube housing the Legislature would revolve once a year. Above that was the Executive in a pyramid rotating once a month. Above that, a cylinder would hold press and communications and revolve daily. The entire edifice was to straddle the Neva in Petrograd (St Petersburg).
One prescient feature was the surrounding double helix – Tatlin’s radial struts could almost represent its canonical amino acid bases! Had the existence and structure of DNA – the key to life – been known to Tatlin it would have been of immense symbolic importance.
Tatlin’s constructivist monument in one sense harks back to the 1890s of Eiffel’s France. In another it looks far forward to the twisted and otherwise non-rectilinear steel and glass postures of almost any present-day city finance quarters.
Tatlin’s Tower was never realised although he and students made a 4.2m high mostly wooden model in 1920.
The model pictured here is 1/42 scale and was erected in 2011 at the London Royal Academy. It was subsequently moved to the UEA Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich. The Sainsbury Centre is in the foreground at right.

The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, between 600 m to 800 m above sea level. A coiling terrace line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of rice in fall, and layers of frost in winter. The terraced fields were mostly built about 650 years ago.
Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Terraced Rice Fields received their name because the rice terraces resemble a dragon's scales, while the summit of the mountain range looks like the backbone of the dragon.
In early June, water is pumped over the rice paddies and young plants are transferred to the main terraces.
A lovely walk over Rhossili Down recently - quite a steep climb so lots of stops on the way up to "enjoy the view"! A large oxygen cylinder at the top would be very nice too! There are a couple of people in the shot standing on the concrete slab which used to be a WW2 radar station. You need to view large to be able to spot them but they do give a sense of scale.
This interesting mushroom is growing on my lawn. At start the caps are white, and covered with scales. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores - hence the "ink cap" name.
No, it is the the Time and Tide Bell near Mablethorpe on the Lincolnshire Coast.. On this vast beach it can be seen for miles but the weather although warm had a featureless almost colourless sky due to haze caused by pollution. I did my best to inject a little more blue into the sky without changing the colour of the bell but its still a little blah..
Nevertheless here it is...I would love to get another photo of this sometime and the beach is beautiful and vast and if you bump into anyone its rare - although the foot prints show that it does have a regular stream of visitors. Two people walking the shoreline in this shot show the scale of this beach ( if you can make their tiny figures out )
It starts ringing as soon as the tide comes in and other bells like it have already been installed at six beaches across the country.
Time and Tide Bell is an art project made up of bells, designed by UK sculptor Marcus Vergette and Australian bell designer Neil McLachlan, installed at coastal locations in the UK. The first one was placed at Appledore, Devon, in 2009 and the seventh at Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire in June 2019

Dale Chihuly
(born September 20, 1941) is an American glass sculptor and entrepreneur. His works are considered to possess outstanding artistic merit in the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture." The technical difficulties of working with glass forms are considerable, yet Chihuly uses it as the primary medium for installations and environmental artwork.

According to local legend, Helfštýn is named after the robber Helfried of Linva, who founded it. The castle was probably built in the last quarter of the 13th century. Around 1320 Vok of Kravař, a member of a prominent Moravian noble family, became the owner of the castle. Helfštýn remained in the possession of the Kravař family for more than a hundred years and underwent far-reaching structural changes during this period. Construction work began on a larger scale in the first half of the 14th century, but the main reconstruction of the castle into a Gothic fortress did not take place until the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century. The Kravařs mainly improved the fortifications of Helfštýn. They replaced the makeshift fortification of the old parkland with a thick stone wall with four bastions, built a prismatic tower over the entrance to the castle itself and secured it with a drawbridge, built a fortified forecourt on the south side and cut the ridge of the hill with a moat carved into the rock.
The era of the Pernštejn family
In 1474, William of Pernštejn took over the castle estate and proceeded to its further reconstruction. In the last quarter of the 15th century,
Helfštýn Castle was enlarged with a thoroughly fortified, extensive farm forecourt (completed in 1480) and another forecourt, which formed a new outpost defending the entire enlarged building. At the same time, the fortifications of the old Kravaře castle were improved with bastions and a new system of towers and gates. The castle's ground plan was definitively given an elongated shape, and in its external form the perfect fortification system significantly overlapped all the other architectural elements.
Renaissance reconstruction
At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the inner core of the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance residence. The old castle palace was demolished, along with part of its original Gothic fortifications, and a magnificent Renaissance palace was built on the vacant space, in sharp contrast to the extensive system of late Gothic fortifications that surrounded it.
The destruction of the castle
In 1656, quite extensive demolition work was carried out, which, although it did not damage the fortifications of Helfštýn too much, definitively deprived it of the character of a manor house. And thus began the long-term destruction of the castle. The destruction was accelerated in the second half of the 18th century by the Ditrichstein family with demolition works. These attempts culminated in 1817, when part of the inner castle was destroyed by artillery fire.
Present day
The present-day character of the castle is that of a fortress with six gates and a series of 18th-century buildings and ramparts. Since the 19th century, the castle has been presented as a tourist and heritage site. Nowadays it has become a natural cultural centre of the region, with various cultural events taking place here throughout the season
It's hard to get a sense of scale but there isn't much choice as to where to place oneself to take this image. It's a bit scary - one wrong step or a slip and it's goodbye from me! There are a couple of trees at the top-left but there is a change in perspective as the camera is pointing up.
There's two paths leading up towards Blencathra's summit, the one on the left goes up via Sharp Edge, the one on the right is an easier safer way.. the choice is yours, whatever you prefer :-)

No matter how large or how small a given space may be there’s always room for colors to share that space. A tree has so much space to share with lots of vivid colors. Look at the colors or shades that Autumn provides us at its peak. A Maple tree is a good example. On a smaller scale look at the most colorful fish in an aquarium. One fish can house several colors within its body. Though many flowers appear to represent basically one color such as a Red Rose, a Yellow Rose etc., this rose caught my attention in that there are no less than two beautiful “Colors Sharing Space” Nature continues to amaze and impress us with miracles (plants, animals and people) that come in many colors yet sharing small spaces. Thanks for viewing my work.

This Painted Lady Butterfly (Vanessa cardui) wings are backlit by the sun. The male and female both called Painted Lady?! This one's on the garden's New England asters (Aster novae-angliae) at head high with more asters in the background as bokeh. Beyond the bokeh, I love the tightly curled proboscis. I've edited this as I believe it's a "Painted lady" not an "American lady" butterfly. There's my ID lack of knowledge.
Giant otters eat their prey face first. By starting at the head, otters can quickly disable their prey by crushing the fish's skull. This also ensures that the fish’s sharp fins, spines, or scales are swallowed in a more manageable way as the body follows head-first.

The Mighty Pico Paraná
I'm from São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil. Pico Paraná, Brazil's 41st tallest mountain, is a 6-hour and 41-minute drive or about 471 kilometers south of where I live.
Having scaled the 3rd to 7th highest mountains in Brazil, I can say that Pico Paraná, the 41st tallest, was by far the most challenging climb I've done so far.
I've scaled numerous mountains, from the snow-capped peaks of Africa to the technical climbs of the Andes, but nothing could have prepared me for the raw, primal challenge of Pico Paraná. Standing at a towering 1,877 meters (6,158 feet), it's the highest point in southern Brazil.
A Night to Remember I began my ascent at 11 PM on a Saturday night, aiming to catch the sunrise at 6:34 AM. Armed with nothing but determination and a headlamp, I plunged into the dense, primordial forest. The initial three hours were a relentless battle against the unforgiving terrain, as I leaped over massive, exposed tree roots and slogged through muddy trails.
A Vertical Dance As I gained altitude, the challenge intensified. The trail transformed into a series of vertical dance floors, where I navigated sheer rock faces using metal rungs and ropes. I climbed one peak after another, each offering breathtaking panoramas but demanding every ounce of my strength.
The Final Push The final ascent was the most grueling. Without a natural water source, I carried a heavy pack, and the lack of sleep was starting to take its toll. Yet, the allure of witnessing the sunrise from the summit kept me going.
Image: A close-up of the climber's hands gripping a rock face, with a backdrop of lush vegetation.
A Celestial Reward Finally, I reached the summit just in time to witness the sunrise. As the first rays of dawn painted the sky in hues of pink and orange, I stood on top of the world, overwhelmed by a sense of accomplishment. The panoramic view was nothing short of spectacular, stretching as far as the eye could see.
The descent was equally demanding, but the euphoria of reaching the summit carried me through. After 18 grueling hours, I finally made it back to the trailhead. Exhausted but elated, I knew I had conquered one of the most challenging climbs of my life.
Key Points About Pico Paraná:
*Highest point in southern Brazil: 1,877 meters (6,158 feet)
*Part of the Ibitiraquire mountain range: Known for its rugged beauty
*Demanding climb: Requires a high level of physical fitness and technical climbing skills
*Multiple summits: Including Pico Paraná, União, and Ibitirati
*Unique ecosystem: Home to a diverse range of flora and fauna
If you're seeking a truly unforgettable adventure, I highly recommend tackling Pico Paraná. Just be prepared for a challenging and rewarding experience.
PS. The photo I shared captures the moment of descending or returning from the peak, bathed in the warm glow of daylight. In contrast, the ascent of Pico Paraná was an adventure undertaken in complete darkness, guided only by the beams of our headlamps. I'll be sharing breathtaking sunrise photos from the summit very soon.

How many times were you awe struck by towering, majestic mountains or dunes, and overwhelmed by their incredible vertical scale? Yet, when you return home and look at your images, they don't seem to convey the grandeur? In my article I explain and illustrate with examples how you can use your telephoto to convey a sense of that vertical scale. Please feel free to read the article at this link. I hope you enjoy!

The scenery at the Cathedral gorge state park in Nevada initially reminded me of the rock formations in many of Utah’s national parks. The only difference I could find was the size. Cathedral gorge has all the patterns and shapes but at a much smaller scale. Its also a lot easier to get close and enjoy at an intimate level. While I hoped for good light during the evening golden hour, light that complimented the landscape only materialized after the sunset. Even golden hour light was too harsh for this landscape, but just as the sun went down, the light turned more ethereal, complimenting the pastel colors of the rocks brilliantly. Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to return to some of the spots I had noticed while hiking and take advantage of the gorgeous light.
If you ever have a chance to tour a large refinery... do it! The behemoth scale of everything dwarfs humans, yet it all came out of our little inventive minds! It’s an experience never forgotten.

Glasgow Cathedral
Glasgow Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Mungo and is the oldest cathedral in mainland Scotland. There are two St Mungo’s in Scotland, one here in Glasgow and the other in Orkney and are the only medieval cathedrals to have mainly survived the Reformation, some damage caused but no way near the scale of destruction inflicted on many other churches, abbeys and cathedrals.
There was a stone cathedral on the site in 1136. Incidentally St Mungo’s tomb lies in the middle of the cathedral’s lower church. Fragments of this early church have been discovered beneath the present structure. This early church was dedicated in 1197. It is thought that the major part of the construction of the current church took place in the 13th century.
After the reformation it was partitioned into three congregations (Inner High, Outer High and Barony). This partition was still in place until the early 19th century. So in 1835 a major restoration took place after the Outer High and Barony moved to another part of the city.
The Cathedral has been Crown Property since 1587, then, in 1857 it moved in care of the State. Now it is the responsibility of ‘Historic Environment Scotland’.

A couple weeks ago a productive Saturday morning saw me make a chase of a U704 out of Dubuque into Northwest Illinois. I didn't know it until I got down around Galena, but there was a meet setup for Scales Mound, Illinois, which would make for a good chase back towards home as a follow-up.
In this view courtesy the aerial camera device, U704 rolls eastward through the picturesque town of Scales Mound on the main. Led by CN 2379, 2999, and 5469 the trio is working to lift the 98 car train up the grade it has been battling since they left the Mississippi River Valley 16 miles to the west. The former Illinois Central main follows the Galena River and it's forks through the scenic Northwest Illinois countryside as the route gains elevation. In what seemed like a pretty well-timed meet, U705 on the far track with CN 3151, 2236, and 8933 arrived only a few minutes ahead of the U704, just enough time to get locked into the siding and allow the dispatcher to keep the eastbound moving. In just a few minutes with the meet complete the U705 would get the light down the hill to continue west.
