Workers removing the bamboo scaffolding after painting a building....no safety harnesses, no helmets, nothing....in the building across from our apartment in Lokhandwala, Bombay.

Bamboo scaffolding is widely used in Hong Kong, with nylon straps tied into knots as couplers

Saw this elaborate piece of scaffolding on Lafayette over the weekend. No idea what it's doing -- maybe just holding up a valuable billboard while construction goes on around it.

Scaffolding holding things up.

Opposite jim's house the local council are doing some running repairs to roofs. The gap between the houses took my fancy with the warm light and silhouette shapes.

I stopped at Nedersta Gärde this afternoon. I asked one of the builders when the first house would arrive, I assume it will be a prefab thing. He didn't understand me as he didn't speak Swedish, and when I asked him in English he said something about tomorrow.

Info

Bamboo has long been used as an assembly material in china, particularly hong kong,

because of its versatility. one of the most interesting applications of the wood is its structural

function for scaffolding. extremely eco-friendly and cost-effective resource, it continues to be

used for this purpose because it is durable enough to support the weight of builders,

their equipment and materials, but is lightweight itself. unlike typical metal scaffolding,

bamboo can also be cut and tailor-made to suit any contour of construction - it can be configured

into a variety of shapes and follow irregular architectural features of a building,

and takes very little time to build-up. it is light and easily transportable to other sites

and no machinery is required to assemble the scaffold and put it in place.

when one job draws to a close, bamboo can easily be recycled and used for another project.

When viewed at large size, one wonders how they erect and dismantle this stuff!

We awoke today to workers outside, blasting music, shouting and putting up mystery scaffolding that the landlord didn't even know about. Turns out the front of the building is going to be painted.

It seems that half of Glasgow is covered in scaffolding. (It will be a nice city when it's finished!) I think it's an interesting idea to cover the building with a picture of the building and especially liked this chap waving at me from a window. :-) Simple things...

An easy guess?

(See the photo from a year ago today.)

Bloomberg Building in London was being cleaned, this banner was put up to hide the scaffolding. The building windows have been configured to the Bloomberg terminal icon shape.

Scaffolding being erected outside the Grade II listed Italian Hospital (built 1898). It remained independent, funded by subscription and donations, never becoming part of the NHS and closed in 1990. It was sold with funds being used to assist patients from Italy or of Italian decent.

The building is now part of the GOSH estate.

Scaffolding is coming down soon.

I like it when it gets all complicated.

Scaffolding bits

Scaffolding is assembled from bamboo poles lashed together with natural fiber rope. Each pole is lashed in several places to several adjacent poles, making a relatively stiff and secure structure. This was the tallest one I saw, about 13 stories.
