[29574-6229 Rains] Because when we go looking for Post Offices I print out a semi-close up Google map to help us find the PO. Our first attempt at locating this Post Office we were way off on the other side of town because of our confusion with the congruence of SC41 and SC41 ALT.

"Steam Powered Fire Engine, ca. 1880: On Friday, July 15, 1880, this engine, named 'Aiken Steam Engine No. 1,' was welcome by a 'big crowd ...at the depot,' according to a report published the next week in Aiken's Journal and Review. In February of 1880, Town Council had authorized its purchased' ... upon the best terms possible and not to exceed the sum of $2500.' A hose carriage, hose, and accessories were purchased along with it, increasing the sum to $2800. A later report, of the March 1880 Fire Company meeting, reveals that it was '...decided to have the wheels painted blue-black with gold stripes. This in comparison with the boiler, which is nickel plated....' Under 120 pounds of steam pressure, the engine was capable of producing a single stream of water, through 250 feet of hose, 231 feet, or four streams of 125 feet each, according to other accounts. On loan from the City of Aiken."
