Most of the shots I posted this weekend looked skyward, or at least featured the sky. It's been so beautiful with fluffy clouds and October blue. But I also shot a few toward the ground. These tiny tiny things were scattered among black-eyed susans and echinacea that skirted St. Joseph's on Devine Street.

For decades, **Garren's Café** was a beloved institution in downtown Pickens, South Carolina, known for its welcoming atmosphere, hearty Southern cooking, and strong sense of community. Opened in 1963 by Bobby Garren in a historic building dating to 1898, the café became a gathering place where locals and visitors enjoyed home-style breakfasts, lunches, fresh coffee, and friendly conversation. Later owned and operated for more than 30 years by Ollie "Gig" Alexander, the restaurant earned a reputation as the heart of downtown Pickens, where customers were treated like family. Following its closure, the café remains a cherished part of Pickens history and is fondly remembered as a place where good food, warm hospitality, and small-town traditions came together. The historic building continues to stand as a reminder of one of Pickens' most iconic dining establishments.

This guy's tail seems rather long to me. Interestingly, Cornell says Red-winged Blackbirds can vary markedly in size and proportions according to their environment.

sunset from Custom House DLR - near the Excel centre - and I was hoping I'd get a sunset with more red and not to have the settings on ISO 400 when I dreamt up this idea for a looking through theme. The sky was a lot better than I took.

On my way from work to see Arthur Smith sing Leonard Cohen Again at the BBC Radio Theatre for a show going out on 17 February. It was incredible, one of the best things I've seen and heard.

More of the marshlands that make up Parris Island. This is a smell that I will forever associate with Parris Island, that marshy or swampy smell.

Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is an 8,095 acre (32.9 km²) military installation near Beaufort, South Carolina tasked with the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the USA report here to receive their initial training.

On November 1, 1915, Parris Island was officially designated a Marine Corps Recruit Depot and training was continued from then on.

Prior to 1929, all transportation to and from the island was by ferry from Port Royal docks to the Recruit Depot docks. In that year the causeway and a bridge over Archer's Creek were completed, thus ending the water transportation era. The causeway was dedicated as the General E. A. Pollock Memorial Causeway in April 1984. During the fateful December of 1941, 5,272 recruits arrived there with 9,206 arriving the following month, making it necessary to add the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Recruit Training Battalions. As the war influx continued, five battalions were sent to New River, North Carolina to train, and the Depot expanded to 13 battalions.

From 1941 through 1945, 204,509 recruits were trained here. At the time of the Japanese surrender, more than 20,000 recruits were aboard the Depot.

On February 15, 1949, a separate "command" was activated for the sole purpose of training female Marine recruits. This command has since been designated the 4th Recruit Training Battalion and is the only battalion in the Corps for training female recruits.

The Korean conflict began in 1950 when 2,350 recruits were in training. From then until the 1st Marine Division was withdrawn from Korea, Parris Island drill instructors trained more than 138,000 recruits. During March 1952, the peak training load of 24,424 recruits was reached.

The recruit tide again flooded during the years of the Vietnam War. A peak training load of 10,979 was reached during March 1966.

Today about 17,000 recruits are trained at Parris Island each year.

This is an image I was commissioned to create for the SC baseball team. It is a composite created from several images photographed by myself over the past couple of months. The fans and stadium were photographed separately and the batter was photographed on location at the team's batting cage. For strobist, this was a four light set-up using 3 Einstein's and one WL 800. The WL was in a stripbox boomed overhead. One Einstein was back left with a 7" reflector. Another Einstein was behind the batter camera right side a diffused beauty dish. Camera left was the third Einstein in a 60" octobox mainly used as fill. All lights triggered by PW's. Retouch and composite work all completed in PS CS5.
