Another RPPC that was never mailed. No place, date or names. Lovely sharp focus however. A family group getting ready to hang the sap pails. A spring ritual that continues to this day in parts of Canada and the United States. Three and a half months from now and we'll be joining my wife's family at her father's sugar bush to collect and boil sap for another batch of maple syrup.

This is a closeup of a pine tree and its sap in the woods near where I work. I have no idea what is going on with all the colors -- I don't even know if it is natural or some kind of pollutant -- but the closer I got the cooler it was. From a distance it just looked like a vaguely discolored tree trunk, but up close it became its own world of color and texture.

The ( ) highlight is from my ring flash--an annoying side effect of that sort of light when used with reflective surfaces. This beetle was wedged down in a crack in the bark, and very difficult to light up.
