The "Three Jewels" of Theravada Buddhism are (1) the Buddha, (2) the Dhamma (the four noble truths, including the eight-fold path), and (3) the Sangha (the order of monks). Here we see the Sangha at lunch (maybe their only meal of the day after begging in the morning) at Wat (temple) Matchimawat in Songkhla, Thailand.
Touched by Light
The light opens — warm, wordless, wide.
No need to chase the sky.
I bow to breath, to bones, to broom.
This moment is enough.
Wat Matchimawat, Songkhla, Thailand. 1974. Scanned transparency. “Three Jewels” - the Buddha, the Dhamma (the four noble truths, including the eight-fold path) and the Sangha (the order of monks) – are the refuge of the Theravada Buddhist.
Forest Elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) use the Bai to "mine" the salt from the stream that runs through the Bai. A Bai is a small clearing in the dense rainforest . Forest elephants are a different species to Savannah elephants. They are genetically different and are a lot smaller. They live in small groups - mother and offspring - not large matriarchal herds like other African elephant. From the air flic.kr/p/2nJwc9E
Breath without boundary,
The koan rides the silence —
No thought, no time, no self.
Just this creamy stillness,
Drinking the whole sky.

Stormy morning mist and rain over the the banks of the Sangha river, which runs between Congo, Central African Republic and Cameroon, 26 Sept 2015. I was travelling by boat from Bomassa, the headquarters of the Nouabale Ndoki National Park to Ouesso, the main town in northern Congo.
The bell rings softly—
not a call to act,
not a command to stay.
In stillness the sangha breathes,
in movement the sangha breathes.
Even a thought of service
is service,
if held with care.
Sit, breathe,
and when the time comes,
the bell will find you.

A monk in Thailand is treated with great respect, and the institution itself is highly revered. The Sangha is the official Order of Monks. Becoming a monk in Thailand is a way of earning honor or merit for one's parents. Those who cannot become full-pledged monks, perhaps due to financial obligations to the family, for example, may do a 3-month Buddhist retreat instead as a short period of service to the monastery.
This photo shows a monk who has served and is about to leave the monastery. You will see the older ordained monks in the front near the altar giving their blessings.
I posted a second photo to show the beauty of the Buddha in this temple. This is in the Marble temple, the only temple in Thailand made of Italian marble. The King at the time of this temple's construction was raised and studied in the West, and had a fancy for things European, thus this marble temple.
Good night my friends. It is almost midnight and time to go to sleep! See you in the morning!

Sunrise on the river Sangha in northern Congo. The Sangha is one of the main access points to the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park. The Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park (NNNP) covers over 4,000km² of intact lowland rainforest in northern #Congo, harboring important populations of large mammals, including forest elephants, western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees. #landscape

A gina (big house) is an ancestral abode housing the head of a clan who is always the oldest male within the extended family. The Dogon place great importance on their ancestors and these gina are a place where the ancestors can rest and be worshipped. The recesses on the outside of the house each hold the spirit of an ancestor and inside the house are alters and shrines. The elder clan head is the intermediary who’s job it is to maintain good relations between the living and the dead.
