Vintage Crochet Sample

It was a common practice 60 to 100 years ago to make samples and keep them in a box or stitch them in a book so that at a later time you could reproduce it. It was also a way of sharing patterns. Most people now don't know how to copy a pattern visually.

An example of the work we are doing in my Creative Sketchbooks class here at the Mill In Banbury. These little sticthed books re made up of many printed sample papers. we have used all sorts of substrates: paper towels, brown packing paper, baking parchment. The idea being that you can make art out of the bits and pieces in your kitchen! each page has been over printed with a number of different Linocuts and Monoprints. I will upload a photo of the inside soon!

In the late 1920s, Chanel was spending time in Britain due to her relationship with the Duke of Westminster. She opened a salon in Mayfair and was considering possible British business ventures. In February 1929, she registered these textile designs in various colourways. They were the only designs that she ever registered in Britain.*
