Apopo is a social enterprise that researches, develops and implements detection rats technology for humanitarian purposes such as Mine Action and Tuberculosis detection. Apopo is a Belgian NGO, with headquarters in Tanzania and operations in Mozambique, Thailand, Angola and Cambodia. Apopo's Tuberculosis detection rats screen tens of thousands of sputum samples collected from TB clinics in Dar es Salaam every year. As a result, many TB patients which were first diagnosed as negative are now identified and can start treatment.

The book's pattern for this potholder is horrendous, and I don't say that lightly. I loved the sample in the book, though, and have spent a good part of my time over the weekend discovering that this is a version of the Catherine's Wheel pattern. I've found written instructions that make more sense and will probably just leave off the random lines of contrast color (the green, pictured above).
