autumn sampled from the forest
Keen to add some native diversity to the naturalized land on my property, I gathered a variety of seeds whilst out hiking two days ago. To make it a bit more artistic, I gathered some leaves to add to the mix.

With plans already underway for the celebration of Indiana University’s Sesquicentennial, in 1966 Benjamin H. Long (A.B. 1926) came forward with an interest in erecting a gateway in memory of his father and mother, Benjamin F. (Trustee from 1915-36) and Lucy Nichols Long who were both IU graduates. But the idea of erecting a portal was initiated by members of the Classes of 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1902 who established a University “Arch Fund” “for the construction of an arch over the Kirkwood Avenue entrance to the campus.”
Finally in the 1980s when the majority of the opposition to the proposal had quieted, long-time University director of scholarships and financial aid Edson Sample stepped forward to fund the Eggers and Higgins design of the early 1960s in honor of his parents, Louise Waite Sample and Kimsey Ownbey Sample Sr. The final completion of the Sample Gates was in 1987.

Built in 1929 and closed in 1979, this 142,140-square-foot building was once a general hospital for patients. This is just a sample of one of the many dilapidated buildings on the 2,000 acre campus, which I would rank among the more interesting places I've visited in my day trips while driving around Georgia. Despite the many signs that indicate the various buildings are unsafe and off-limits, my wife decided she had to get a closer look and made it to within about twenty feet of the door pictured when security pulled up right behind where I was standing at the top of the stairs to get my shot. Certain we were about to be reprimanded and/or ticketed, we found the security guard to be quite civil and were merely warned to go no further than the sidewalk along the road. So: Do other people explore the crumbling interiors of Central State Hospital buildings in spite of the risks? Well, Youtube has a modest number of videos where folks have snuck in, and there are also interior shots posted in Flickr and elsewhere: amyheiden.com/central-state-hospital-ga. Yes, it would be a temptation. I feel certain the buildings are largely intact and would make for some interesting photography, and, of course, there are always going to be those goons who think this place is haunted and hope to encounter something more exciting than a security guard. However, I have to assume that, at the least, you'll be charged with criminal trespassing and receive a hefty fine if caught.
