A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke Cover) | Brian Owens

_______________________________________________

I was born by the river

In a little tent

Oh, and just like the river, I've been running

Ever since

It's been a long

A long time coming, but I know

A change gon' come

Oh yes, it will

It's been too hard living

But I'm afraid to die

'Cause I don't know what's up there

Beyond the sky

It's been a long

A long time coming, but I know

A change gon' come

Oh yes, it will

I go to the movie

And I go downtown

And somebody keep telling me

"Don't hang around"

It's been a long

A long time coming, but I know

A change gon' come

Oh yes, it will

Then, I go to my brother

And I say, "Brother, help me, please"

But he winds up knockin' me

Back down on my knees, oh

There been times that I thought

I couldn't last for long

But now, I think I'm able

To carry on

It's been a long

A long time coming, but I know

A change gon' come

Oh yes, it will

Today is the 5th day of Valentine's month of February, and here is another work about love.

Your skin like dawn

Mine like musk

One paints the beginning

of a certain end.

The other, the end of a

sure beginning.

Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in distress

There's danger of me losing all of my happiness

For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist

And this you can fix, so

Cupid draw back your bow

And let your arrow go

Straight to my lover's heart for me

Nobody but me...

It's raining today, but that won't stop Cupid's arrows from coming your way ♥ → → →

2016 ! I'm back after 4 years, now! happy New year, everybody! ^^

Don't know much about history

Don't know much biology

Don't know much about a science book

Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you

And I know that if you love me too

What a wonderful world this would be...

Or what IS it? Happy Abstract Saturday! We had the most interesting clouds the other day. They were reflecting the sunshine so beautifully, so I didn't want to miss out on taking their picture.

Not everyone likes or understands abstracts. Their meaning can be hard to interpret. Don't worry, there will always be tomorrow to post something more definite :) :) :)

Please!! NO Awards or Large Graphics...Buddy Icons are OK. Thank You!

Taken in Pype Hayes Park (again!) - with music written and performed by Sam Cooke: one of my favourite songs....

A Change Is Gonna Come

York Races - Wednesday 17th May 2023

For the record (see what I did there?)'Cupid' by Sam Cooke is playing.

Remember the movie Inner Space? Just me then.....

let me tell you that

I'd give my life to laugh at this strife

below below below

down here below, for I'd be a king

I'd follow each ring I blow

so little smoke rings I love

please take me above with you

As far as I'm concerned, there is no better voice than Sam Cooke. I love him and I could listen to him sing all day. Gospel, standards, songs he made into standards, live concert recordings... love it all. Seriously, his voice is so beautiful - silky with just that hint of gravel and totally soulful. Nobody sings like him - nobody. Songs like "A Change is Gonna Come" are heartwrenching, but his version of "This Little Light of Mine" just has me literally clapping and throwing my hands in the air like I'm at church.

Smoke Rings is a dreamy song that I just love - Sam Cooke doing what he does best.

Oh, that voice! I love it.

It would be awesome if I could really blow smoke rings, but alas - I cannot. Luckily this lovely one was photographed by Kristof Borkowski and uploaded under a Creative Commons license. :) I love the original photo - pretty pretty!

Otis Redding is here performing Sam Cooke's 'Shake' live for the television special "Ready Steady Otis!", with Eric Burdon (singer of the Animals) sharing some of the vocals. The date is 1966 and the dancers Patricia Kerr, Cassandra Mahon and Sandy Sargeant erupted between the artists and audiences with a sassy and stylish commitment that remembers back to the age of Swing when Lindy Hop interthreaded the musicians and guests at the Harlem Savoy.

Looking back at the footage of the Otis special, is to see a space where music shared between people, and this single black and white television special must be understood as one of the inputs that seeded the dance hall movement of late sixties northern England known as 'Northern Soul'. Otis was black and Eric was white, and with the life force of the soul music and the drive of the dancers, the space was alive and in full colour.

Although Otis did not write the track 'Shake', he did make it his own, here, refusing to let it stop within an expected format and extending it with 'na's' that see him simply join in with the horn section as an applied chant. Singing half and quarter beats with the rhythm section (also enjoyed by James Brown) would be enough to give Otis a thread within musical history; on top he was a master craftsman of song, and his track '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay' is one of the finest short songs ever recorded. Add to this the fact that his live performances of "Try a Little Tenderness" were at the summit of dynamic energy, and Otis Redding importance to musical history is alive and assured.

The original television footage:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pKpfs5EK_s

Eric Burdon is well known for a house in the rising sun. An original folk form by Leadbelly can be heard here:

Eric's classic version from 2 years prior to his evening with Otis:

Otis Redding's '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," is another omnipresent song that furnishes the collective household of mankind. So present, it's almost possible to miss, and It has the quality of a good story photograph:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTVjnBo96Ug

'(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay was a track about a migrant from 'The Great Migration' whose dreams turned out to be empty - watching others anonymously float by. 'Try a little tenderness' talks of an overworked lady - weary and wearing a shaggy dress... both tracks adding fine melody and passionate support to quite desperate moments, both tracks laden with description and compassion. Today the track from this lens test 'Shake' might evoque a 'Blues Brothers' of ultra abandon gratuitous or a fleet of sexual innuendo. For Otis, the 'Shake' is a collective mood of shared dancing and the key is the question "Do you feel alright?". Like Jimmy Smith, Otis could be a preacher within music. Otis wanted the music to make everyone feel 'fine', refusing to leave people from his list. His thrilling energy is illustrated here through the lifeforce of a waterfall.

Nothing like listening to a bunch of old songs with the word 'chain' in the title.

From left is Sam Cooke's woeful hit from 1960 called Chain Gang, which peaked at No.2 on the US Billboard charts and at No. 9 in the UK.

Next is the song Chains, written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, recorded by The Beatles for their first album, Please Please Me released in 1963. It was only released as an album track with lead vocals by George Harrison.

Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools was released in 1968 and reached No.2 on the US Billboard charts and No. 1 on the US Billboard R&B charts cementing Aretha's standing as the Queen of Soul. An amazing song by an amazing singer.

Ball and Chain is the Big Mama Thornton song recorded live and released in 1968 on the album Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & the Holding Company. It proved that Janis Joplin could do justice to the blues with her powerful rendition of the song.

The Pretenders were a proto-punk/ new wave band led by guitarist-songwriter Chrissie Hynde. They released Back on the Chain Gang in 1982. It reached No. 7 on the US Billboard charts and No. 17 in the UK. I remember this song getting a lot of air play, at least in southern Ontario.

We're Here looks at Chains today.

Another in my Famous Strangers project of people who are not the famous person but share the name. Here is Sam Cook but you will say Sam Cooke the singer spelt his name with an E at the end and this Sam doesn’t. Well it would appear Sam Cooke changed his name from Cook to Cooke.

When I was photographing people for the 100 Strangers project I found some of my models had famous names: Richard Burton, Paul Newman etc and I remembered one of my lecturers at Uni introduced himself as The Real Richard Burton because Richard Burton the actor’s real name was Jenkins.

This morning, I inexplicably awoke at 5:30 am. I am not, nor have I ever been, a morning person, let alone an early riser. I no longer sleep in very late anymore (late these days is 9:30), but 5:30? 5:30 is normally a very painful hour.

Not today. Good morning! And in a delightful mood, no less.

So there was really no choice. I laced up my fanciest shoes (Costume National, don't you know, a gift once, from Chicago). Some days just call for you to walk tall (and with a little swing, if you know what I mean).

I wore my wide-legged trousers and striped socks, put my hair up and smiled. Slid behind the wheel of my zippy German motorcar (okay, it's a 2000 VW Golf and it needs both a servicing and a cleaning). And through the thick fog I drove toward my morning appointment, up to the Caldecott Tunnel, where the fog broke for a glorious moment of wisps and sunshine and blue sky, only to become heavy and dark again on the other side, as I descended toward Orinda and Lafayette.

The entire ride, I sang with Otis Redding. 8:35 am, the windows wet, and I'm laughing and singing. That voice! The way it catches you on that bittersweet edge, pleasure and raggedy pain swirled into one. He moans at you, and you moan right back: How can one voice take you from searing heartbreak to the uncontainable joy of falling head-over-heels to the hand reaching out promising you love everlasting and then taking you back to uncertainty and a little touch of heartache all over again? Whatever it is, it's magic. A little like love itself.
