Wildlife killings by speeding vehicles is a very real menace in Valparai.

This deer was standing just 1ft away from me but I almost never saw him in the twilight. Would not have noticed him if some motorcyclists had not stopped to stare.

Close-up shot of Sambar Deer (Cervus unicolor). Taken in Ranthambore National Park, India

On our one of the safaris at BRT wildlife sanctuary, we saw this "Sambar deer" (male) filling up its tummy in the morning mist. As we approached, he became alert and was staring at us to ensure that we are indeed harmless.

I saw such a male sambar for the first time, with a big beard like a saint, and horns with white fur.
