These enormous deer can reach 500 kilos, but despite their size, they are preyed upon by packs of small native wild dogs, called Dholes, which are only about fifteen kilos, and which we unfortunately did not see in our six days in the park. As an adaptation to this predation, the park’s sambar spend most of their time in proximity to the park’s most peopled areas, where the dholes do not venture.

On a side note, Khao Yai is also home to some two hundred wild elephants. We saw elephant dung on every trail we walked, including one right in view of the visitor center, and there was even dung in front of the cabin we stayed in, but sadly, we never did see one. It’s actually amazing how even hundreds of elephants can just disappear into a jungle like Khao Yai’s.

Sambar deer, Khao Yai National Park, Thailand.

Spotted near Felixstowe. Horrible looking thing, makes the Jag/Micra things look nice! This one was imported over here in 2008 according to DVLA.

What a stroke of luck- this could easily be the only one in the UK- unless you know different?

Morning. Bored, I went into the kitchen. My wife was preparing sambar, a popular dish made of dhal [lentils], drumsticks, onions, tomatoes, chillies and other vegetables. What you see is the simpler version.

Goes well with rice. Very healthy, easy to digest. Spicy.

VIDEO OF MY TRIP

Jim Corbett National Park, which is a part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a Project Tiger Reserve lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The magical landscape of Corbett is well known and fabled for its tiger richness. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the glory of being India's oldest and most prestigious National Park. It is also being honored as the place where Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. This unique tiger territory is best known as the father who gave birth of the Project Tiger in India to protect the most endangered species and the Royal of India called Tigers.

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.

They are favourite prey of tigers and Asiatic lions. In India, the sambar can comprise up to nearly 60% of the prey selected by the Bengal tiger. Anecdotally, the tiger is said to even mimic the call of the sambar to deceive it while hunting.

To the platter of a south Indian, Sambar is something as oxygen is to our bodies! Being an east Indian, I may not relate to it as emotionally as a south Indian would but having stayed at Vizag and Port Blair for a large time span, I think I can at least understand their emotional inclination to this culinary marvel !!

My mom makes brilliant sambar and my brothers relish that with steamed rice, a spoon or two of ghee and some nicely fried vegetable! I still remember those days when my mom made gallons of it and three of us would finish it all; thats the magic of a plate of steamed rice and hot sambar! I had a strong craving for it yesterday morning and thanks to the packet of sambar powder gifted to me by my magas and the little haunch that I had about utility of beans while shopping in the supermarket 2 days ago, I made some in the morning and relished it all over the day. I followed my mom's recipe but probably couldn't get even remotely close to her awesomeness; probably for the extra ingredient of "maa ka pyaar" as they say! :)

This morning my mom told me that she liked this pic by the looks of it (yes I posted it on facebook before Flickr :P) and that she was happy that I am having rice and sambar even here, at Holland! Who would have ever thought of it! ha ha!

O dear sambar, u made my day yesterday! :)

Two male sambar deer testing each others strength! This photo was taken in Ranthambore National Park in India!

It carries a logo for Discraft a company that makes frisbees. Quilchena Park has a frisbee golf course - something the local dog owners find a bit odd, since it is also an off leash park. All it takes is for someone to bring a Border Collie and someone's expensive disc is going to get chomped!

Not sure if the highly individual colour scheme was applied here after import or in Japan. Certainly eye catching. And more original than pretending its a VW bus

"Sambar Deer" (juvenile) - a large deer native to the Indian Subcontinent, southern China and Southeast Asia. Young or sickly deers are easy prey for leopards and dholes.

They all turned in the direction of a tiger call they heard.

A pack of dholes cuon alpinus attack Sambar deer cervus unicolour in a water hole in Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The Sambar deer have entered the water. One sambar attacking the dholes while the mother stand guard near her fawn and is stamping her feet as a sign of alarm, nervousness and also to frighten the dholes. Sambar being taller have an advantage in water as the dholes have to swim while attacking and hence will tire easily.

One of a few rescued from Tesco where otherwise they were destined for a long and unloved life in the bottom of the box. It seems most collectors and certainly children have ignored this cute Kei class truck. Mint and boxed.

At the Takin reserve in Thimpu,Bhutan, were several deer . This was a fine specimen ,that was quite used to humans being around. Hence a fairly close`portrait`.

Can't afford that famous Volkswagen Microvan (although I don't know how you couldn't, they cost next to nothing!), then Subaru have you covered with this retrostyled version of their Sambar minivan.

As is the case with many Japanese car makers, their fascination with retro European cars such as the Jaguar MkII, the Mini, Rolls Royces and old Volkswagens, they always have a model dedicated to these machines of days gone by, but usually they're much much smaller and based on a Nissan Micra!
