At a conference early this year (PyCon 2008), I met a chap who actually lived in Cambridge. I remember admiring the wide expanses of green that Google Maps showed around the city as he pointed out where he lived.

A month or two later, when I surprised myself by actually making plans to visit Oxford and Cambridge myself , I could neither find where I had written his name, nor his email address! So I resigned myself to seeing Cambridge without visiting anyone I knew.

Imagine my surprise, on the second-to-last evening of Oxbridge 2008, to walk down Senate Hall Passage, to stand aside as a bicycle rode past — I pride myself at having become quite tolerable at bicycle-dodging by the end of my two weeks in England — and suddenly to have the rider stop and call my name! It was Sam, to my vast surprise, and we met the following evening and he treated me to a pint at The Eagle.

Sam showed me the plaque with which the pub commemorated February 28, 1953, when the young researchers Watson and Crick stormed in from the Cavendish Laboratory across the street and announced, "we had found the secret of life." They had just worked out that the DNA at the center of our cells is wrapped into a double helix of matching base-pairs, which means that each strand can then be separated and used as the template for a new, perfect copy of the molecule — which is how each new cell in our bodies inherits from its predecessor the information about how we are assembled.

And, speaking of inheritance, what does Sam do? He is a researcher with the Darwin Correspondence Project, which works to transcribe and assemble the voluminous existing collections of Charles Darwin's private letters. You can Google for Sam's name, and the fourth most popular link on the whole Internet is an article with the headline, Letters Reveal Young Darwin Had Stinky Feet. My own attempts at academic research never came close to producing that kind of copy!

It was not only great to see Sam and be shown many corners of Cambridge that I would not have seen otherwise, but also to talk with someone for whom historical personality is important. Both the Darwin Project and the Oxbridge C.S. Lewis Institute that I was attending, it seems to me, have a strong link: a common interest not just in the doctrines and theories that have come down to us, disembodied, from the past, but in the personalities, in the living people, who thought and who held them.

This selection of photos is currently work in progress. After building my Raspberry PI powered Spectrum+ I decided I wanted to do the same for my Sam Coupe. However there was no way I was going to destroy an original SAM!

So I decided to try and build one from scratch using my 3D printer. Still a lot of work to do but it is taking shape.

Will all be powered by a Raspberry Pi running the SimCoupe emulator.

Keep checking back for more updates!

The Sam Laud is up on the Detroit River at Windsor.

Hung out with my friend Sam today. Didn't take to many pictures but I snapped this one with my new 50mm f/1.4.

I sold my 24-70 2.8. I just love prime lenses. Bought an iPhone, 50mm and a longboard.

Big news! I got asked to be a photographer for my school. Shooting things like pep rallies, football games and other school events. I'm so excited. I'm planing on picking up a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 Non IS soon as well as the 35L.

Exciting stuff going on.

Natty light!

Located in a National Historic District near the center of Pulaski, TN, the museum stands almost on the spot where the "Boy Hero of the Confederacy" was executed on November 27, 1863. Captured behind enemy lines with damaging information in his possession, Davis faced death by hanging rather than betray his source. The museum contains Civil War memorabilia as well as leg irons worn by young Sam Davis. The Museum is maintained by the Giles County Historical Society by Appointment Only. The actual spot of the execution is marked with a simple stone marker.

The day before I found this museum, which is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, I found a post card of this place place in an antique store in the town of Cowan.
