Downtown skyline from near the Eugenia steps on Bernal Heights. The building that looks like a coffee thermos that sticks above the housing in the right half of the picture is the new Salesforce Tower (salesforcetower.com ) which is 3.6 miles (in a straight line) from where I’m standing. The tall, dark, tower in about the center of the picture is (I believe), 555 California.
When I lived in San Francisco (1983-1996), Bernal Heights had a reputation as an area for artists and various creative types, but as difficult to reach. The streets are narrow, twisty, and steep, and the nearest public transit was slow and sometimes not safe. Gentrification in general has made the area much more livable (and much more expensive), and changes in transit access has resulted in much quicker access via trolley to downtown – though getting to the trolley line is steep walk from most of the area.

Two photos of San Francisco and the Marin Headlands looking across Oakland and taken from Fairmont Ridge over San Leandro, California. The first was taken in Dec. 2020 soon after sunset and the second was taken the following March in the morning. Haze in the atmosphere distorts the images some, especially the second. It's fun to pick out certain landmarks such as the Embarcadero Center, Sales Force Tower, the Transamerica Pyramid (is it still called that?), the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and more.
