The encroaching fog striking the new Salesforce Tower in San Francisco with cool effect. I always thought it looked rather similar to IFC in Hong Kong (see right; took that photo in 2008). Recently I found out both buildings are by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. Making sense now. #soma #somasf #salesforcetower #ifc #ifchk
Whatever happened to San Francisco, the beautiful city by the bay? What a unique and charming city, people said, so unlike the high-rise jungles back East. Whatever happened to the people who protested when the Transamerica building went up, furious about the "Manhattanization of San Francisco?" They're trying to destroy our beautiful city, the protesters said. They were right then, and they're right now.

With a top roof height of 970 feet (300 m) and an overall height of 1,070 feet (330 m), it will be the second tallest building west of the Mississippi River after the Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles. The original proposal called for a 1,200-foot (370 m) tower, but the height was later reduced.

The skyline of San Francisco now has a new king. The Salesforce Tower (on the right of the 2 tall buildings), originally the Transbay Tower, officially became the tallest in the City when it surpassed the Transamerica building's 853 feet. The Transamerica pyramid held the honor for more than 45 years.
The Salesforce Tower stands higher than any other skyscraper in San Francisco and, I think, California; so I could not miss the top of the building while I was shopping in the South of Market - SOMA - and was compelled to make this photo. I used the telephoto capabilities of my Canon Powershot SX50 to do so from many blocks away.
