Piles of Roads and Buildings

San Francisco, CA

At the intersection of Mission and Steuart Streets, San Francisco’s architectural history feels like it’s compressing time. In this single frame, the modern glass-and-steel elegance of Salesforce Tower and 181 Fremont jostle for attention with the stalwart 1929 Shell Building, its brown-and-black Art Deco facade still commanding respect nearly a century later. In the foreground, the red-brick historic Audiffred Building—once a waterfront saloon and labor union stronghold—holds its ground with an ornate Mansard roof and delicately carved details. The layers here tell a uniquely San Francisco story: a city that reinvents itself with every boom while fiercely protecting fragments of its past. The juxtaposition is almost poetic. Gleaming towers promise tech-fueled futures, yet it's the timeworn brickwork and Victorian flourishes that remind you who San Francisco has always been—scrappy, stylish, and proud of its contradictions. Zendesk's billboard nods to the present tech era, while pedestrians flow past the unchanged rhythm of the Embarcadero. It’s all here: old, new, and the tension between them. This spot doesn’t just offer a view—it offers a narrative about a city forever in transition and deeply rooted all the same.

Salesforce Tower, the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco, stands as an iconic symbol of the city's modern skyline. Completed in 2018, this striking 1,070-foot structure redefined the Financial District with its sleek, curved design and tapered silhouette. Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Salesforce Tower is a marvel of both form and function, featuring advanced energy-efficient systems that earned it LEED Platinum certification.

The building's distinctive glass façade, which gleams in the sunlight, is engineered to minimize heat gain while maximizing natural light, making it a beacon of sustainability. At 61 stories, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Bay Area, making it a landmark for both residents and visitors. Its cutting-edge design not only reflects the technological advancements of Silicon Valley but also honors San Francisco’s status as a global hub of innovation.

The tower also connects to the Salesforce Transit Center, a public space that blends nature with modern architecture, featuring a rooftop park. Inside, the building offers state-of-the-art office spaces, including the headquarters for tech giant Salesforce, contributing to the city’s growing tech-driven economy. It's a true representation of San Francisco's evolution, blending old-world charm with forward-thinking design and sustainability.

Whether you're photographing its impressive silhouette from different angles or admiring its nighttime LED light displays, Salesforce Tower is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts and city explorers alike.

I forgot I shot these video clips of the LED animation atop the Salesforce Tower two weeks ago. I think these are the only animated sequences. There is also a solid blue that stays on overnight.

Looking like Lord of the Rings...where in SF is Mordor?

The view from Ina Coolbrith Park is probably the most underrated in San Francisco.

#SuperBlueBloodMoon

In the small hours of the morning on Wednesday January 31, people on the west coast of America were treated to the sight of a lunar eclipse that was just finishing as the moon hit the horizon.

While any lunar eclipse is cool to see, this one was extra special, because it was a "super moon" (the orbit of the moon brought it closer to the earth), a "blue moon" (the second full moon in a month) and a "blood moon" (a full lunar eclipse, where the color of the moon in the shadow of the earth turns red), and the combination of all 3 doesn't happen that often!

This photo was taken from the flight deck of the USS Hornet, which is now a floating museum in Alameda, California, and it catches the partially eclipsed moon (about an hour after totality) hanging in the sky above San Francisco.
