Dynamite dance group-----beautiful costumes-----delightful to watch. Photographed at the Calgary Exhibition Grounds
This was the best that I could muster out of the Samsung Galaxy S7. At first glance, it doesn't seem so bad, but I know I can definitely do better with my Canon 6D w/ 24-70mm L f4. The details are just not there, either because of small sensor size or overly aggressive noise reduction. I'm guessing noise reduction that's needed due to small sensor size. I was happy with the resolution/detail shown in other photos so far.
One of the things I've learned about cell phone photography is that the aperture on a phone camera is fixed, meaning you can't change the aperture setting at all and correct exposure is achieved by adjusting ISO and shutter speed. Because it's always shooting wide open, you won't be seeing star bursts on street lights like you would when stopping down a lens.
In a pinch, a cell phone could do for a nightscape shot, but if I'm expecting it, I'd bring a real camera along.
This was taken after bubble tea when we got back from Banff. I told the missus that I wanted to take this downtown shot that night, because it was clear to downtown and it was still cold enough for the steam to show.

i went for another nice long (sunday) walk this morning.. the ground really wasn't all that dry here. it kinda reminded me of a desertscape that just got a few minutes of rain.
2007:
I've since re-worked this particular photograph of mine into quite a few things.. Hopefully it'll prefix all future tenement and dystopian projects:

Photography from south-east Calgary and photoshop with several tricks (not difficult ones) that’s all I did. A few famous Calgary downtown commercial buildings, apartments or landmarks should be seen including Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary Stampede’s ground, Calgary Tower, The Bow, Encana Tower, Eighth Avenue Place I, and Arriva Tower 1, etc. Picture quality not the best I’m sure this is more enjoyable with its funny angle.

This is a photo from early this year, but I thought it needed to be shared with all you Flickr folk. I had just moved to Calgary and this is one of the first photos I took with my D800.
I'd love to read any comments.... I want to try this at sunrise and sunset.
Week 10 - Hometown
I consider a few places my hometown having lived in Hong Kong, Oakland and Calgary. I've been in Calgary since 1994, so 25 years now. It's by far the best place I've ever lived and like it very much here. This is the iconic skyline that you'll likely find on a postcard. I learned earlier this year that the Saddledome is not part of the city's future plans going forward. I really wanted to be sure to have a good picture before it went away. The Saddledome was such an iconic part of Calgary's history. I think that large places of gathering, especially for sports are a large part of an area's identity. Just look at The Colosseum or the ball courts in Chichen Itza. You know you're in Western Canada when... if you look carefully in the lower left corner, you'll see a horse there! Why is there a horse and a bunch of horse trailers by the Saddledome in March with snow still on the roofs?
It was really windy this morning and as soon as the grey blah blanket of cloud started clearing up I headed out on my planned short drive. My first stop was here..Scotsmans Hill in Calgary (not far from my place) to try out the LEE Filter system I now have. It was fun playing with them to see what I could get. This is a 15 second exposure. The Elbow River bottom starts to look glass like...the tree in the bottom right has movement from the wind, and even the clouds have slight softness from the movement from the wind.
This was a "Big Stopper" and "Little Stopper" stacked in the holder giving 16 stops.
Downtown Calgary from Scotsman's Bluff overlooking the Calgary Saddledome, home of many of the 1988 Olympics events on ice. Long Exposure. First pictures of the new year.

On my long walk today I came across Tony's Auto Service which is a Volkswagen Specialty Auto repair garage in SE Calgary near the Saddledome. Nestled amongst what used to be a larger neighborhood of old houses, is this repair centre where I spotted this absolutely gorgeous mid 60's (64/65?) Ford Econoline van. Love the "Collector" BC place!
I haven't taken a shot of the recently re-branded Scotiabank Saddledome, this is the home arena of the Calgary Flames.
While Nolan and the Wife were visiting the in-laws, I stepped out for a quick night photoshoot.

The Scotiabank Saddledome is one of Calgary's most recognized icons, a sports and entertainment venue that has become a symbol of the city. Built for the 1988 Winter Olympics, its saddle-shaped roof is a reference to the region's cowboy history. It is the home of the Calgary Flames ice hockey team and also hosts concerts, sporting events, and the annual Calgary Stampede exhibition. The Saddledome is a central place in the social and cultural life of Calgary.
