Taken after the "You Are Here" performance poetry event at ARC Stockton-on-Tees. Jo Shapcott and Daljit Nagra and a third poet a winsome lass from Derry called Colette Bryce who opened and closed the show with a superb reading of her poem "Nature Walk" Unfortunately, I was not quick enough to corner her for a photograph, but as she is now based in Newcastle I will definately try to keep up with her. An enjoyable evening of poetry performance over all to soon. From Daljit Nagra:
IN A WHITE TOWN - By Daljit Nagra
She never looked like other boy's mums.
No one ever looked without looking again
at the pink kameez and balloon'd bottoms,
mustard-oiled trail of hair, brocaded pink
sandals and the smell of curry. That's why
I's bin the letters about Parents Evenings,
why I'd police the noise of her holy songs,
check the net curtains were hugging the edges,
lavender-spray the hallway when someone knocked,
pluck all the gold-top milk from it's crate
in case the mickey-takers would later disclose it,
never cofessing my parents' weird names
or the code of our address when I was licked
by Skinheads (by a toilet seat)
desperate to flush out the enemy within.
I would have felt more at home had she hidden
that illiiterate body, bumping noisily inot women
at the market, bulging into it's drama'd gossip,
for homework - in the public library with my mates,
she'd call, scratching on the windows. Scratching again,
until later, her face would be in my red face,
tow of us alone, she'd duck at my stuttered Punjabi,
laughing she'd say I was a gora, I'd only be freed
by a bride from India who would double as her saathi.
Nowadays, when I visit, when she hovers upward,
hobbling towards me to kiss my forehead
as she once used to, I wish I could fall forward.

ARTIST: Farhad Hussain
SPONSOR: ABN AMRO Private Banking
LOCATION: Singapore Art Museum
Description:Farhad bases his work on the realities of human relationships and their complexities with nature. He applies his trademark use of bright, vibrant colors and a huge smile on his subjects to convey an intentional act of concealment and deceit. He endows his narrative with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. To Farhad the Elephant is such an intelligent and majestic animal and is revered in many cultures. Yet, they have been extensively used as beasts of burden.

Description:In the past, elephants live peacefully in the wild. Today, with habitat loss and extensive areas of the forest exploited by humans, these gentle giants have nowhere to go. Can the destroyers of habitat (humans) be also the ones who help save it?

ARTIST: Ben Cabrera
SPONSOR: PSA International
LOCATION: Singapore Art Museum
Description:The idea of having people around the elephant is to show that humans are the ones destroying the lives and habitat of the elephant. We are one of the main reasons for elephant to be extinct due to competition for space. We have to learn how to live side by side with elephants and take care of Mother Nature.

About Elephant Parade
It is Elephant Parade's mission to be the world's largest financial support organization for the Asian elephant, threatened with extinction. The open air art exhibitions create worldwide attention, public awareness and support for the cause of elephant conservation: the elephant statues never go unnoticed by the wider public and mass media.
Elephant Parade’s concept is a unique combination of Art, Business and Charity. Art drives the value of the Elephant Parade: the life size elephant statues are exhibited in well-known cities and auctioned off at prestigious gala events. Smaller size hand painted limited edition replicas are sold in ‘Elephant Parade Gallery Stores’ and the web shop. The more superior the quality of the Art, the more successful the Business, the higher the amounts raised for Charity.
Elephant Parade is not a charity, but it is probably the most charitable enterprise in the world. Part of all proceeds from Elephant Parade auctions and retail benefits various projects and organizations, dedicated to the conservation of the Asian elephant. To date, this unique concept made it possible to contribute over 4 million Euros to this goal, and is put to good use in projects varying from elephant hospitals and corridors to lobbying governments and research.
Many Asian elephants have been saved and cured, but there are still thousands more that need our support

Lord Krishna is the hero of the great Indian epic,"The Mahabharata".In the incarnation of the Lord as Krishna, he was brought up as an unknown cowherd though born in a royal family because of prevailing circumstances. He used to play the flute which encharmed the herds of cattle as well as humans. He did many miracles and pranks as a child .
He became king later and He worked for peace between two royal clans .
The holy "Bhagavad Gita", containing the Lord's admonitions to Arjuna in the battle-ground is an allegorical depiction capable of bringing peace and clarity to a confused mind filled with turmoil and is a beacon-light for the Hindus.
The Tamil poet Bharati says "Engiruntho vandaan, idai saathi nan endraan,"meaning the Lord came from a place unknown and revealed himself as a simple cowherd. How blessed are we to have had Him here!
The Lord says in the "Bhagavad Gita":"Whenever and wherever the 'dharma' (moral codes) are violated, i will be born again as an 'avatar' to drive away the chaos and establish peace and to protect the good and vanquish the evil"
