Beneath Upper Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois.
Weather and road salt have caused extensive corrosion of exposed structural steel as well as rusting of the reinforcement bars embedded in the concrete roadway. Rusting of the rebar has caused concrete to flake away, revealing more rebar and accelerating the deterioration.
Spray painted markings indicate that some agency has surveyed this decay and is planning to repair it, which will not be simple.
I took this photograph from the walkway on the south side of the Chicago river, east of the DuSable Bridge.
On a dead wheelbarrow, long since gone to the tip.
What strikes me is how very similar this is to some foliose lichens.

Aa FJ Holden lays rusting in the still hot dry air.....lost to time over the years a shadow of it's former glory.
Rust oxidizes with a wonderful display of colour in Africa! If you have any suggestions for a better name, please feel free to let me know as I welcome the input! Thanks! :)
Just spent £450 getting various rust removed from my Rover 214 SEi. This was the worst bit and was cut away and replaced.
Following this, the rear arches were treated to plenty of underseal as were the sills.
It's now looking pretty good - not bad for a 14 year old car.
