Ruby Throated Hummingbird feeding on a Mina Lobata Vine (Firecracker Vine). Green Spring Gardens Park
Small hummingbird found in a variety of woodland and brushy habitats. Male distinctive with ruby-red throat and black chin. Female has whitish underparts with almost no buffy tones (perhaps a very light wash on flanks). Readily comes to sugar water feeders and flower gardens. Default summer hummingbird over most of eastern U.S. and Canada. Winters south to Panama. Very difficult to distinguish from Black-chinned Hummingbird, especially females and young males; thankfully limited range overlap. Ruby-throated averages somewhat brighter green above, shorter- and straighter-billed, and has slightly narrower outer wing feathers, but these differences are all extremely subtle.
Ruby throat Hummingbird allows me to have my very first shot like this.
I was continually shooting in a vain attempt to catch it in flight. It was then it landed on the Zinnia. It was truly a thrill.
Today it was announced that there is now a Cafepress shop selling Rails Stuff.
Now I love Rails as much as the next person… but what is up with this?
A Rails Thong? Who knew there would be a demand for these?
$20 to the first Rails geek that can snap a picture of someone wearing one of these and get it posted to the Rails Weblog.
We have had our son & family to stay for a couple of nights and I'm afraid as soon as Ruby saw Alice (18 mths) & Robin (5 yrs) she was out the door and did not reappear till either they were out or had gone to bed. I think because she found them too noisy!!
This is Ruby coming in this evening as they have gone home today.
I do not think she went far, probably curled up in a neighbours quieter garden!

Leucistic Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. I can't believe it! I was on the phone looking out at the garden and this little guy stopped by! Wow!
There are several species of Ruby-tailed wasps in the UK. This is the one most frequently seen. The head and thorax are greenish-blue, and the abdomen is red. As they usually appear in bright sunlight the vivid metallic colours of their bodies appear very jewel-like.
Ruby-tailed wasps lay their eggs in the nests of other solitary bees and wasps. When the eggs hatch, the larvae eat the bee or wasp larvae. For this reason they are sometimes called 'Cuckoo Wasps'.
They do possess a stinging organ although there is no venom and they are harmless.
Ruby my son's dog has a rather strange shaped head as she was hit by a car many years ago but survived even with a caved in scull. Tough dog!!

Ruby Beach is the northernmost of the southern beaches in the coastal section of Olympic National Park in the U.S. state of Washington. It is located on Highway 101, in Jefferson County, 27 miles (43 km) south of the town of Forks.

This experiment was an attempt to recreate the fluorescence of chromium activated corundum (aka 'ruby'). Aluminum hydroxide was mixed with 1-4 drops of Cr(III) oxide in a basic solution. This was placed on a small amount of aluminum sulfate in an aluminum foil container and a bit of water was added.
The sample was then heated, first with a propane torch until the water was removed and then with a MAPP gas torch until the aluminum sulfate expanded into foam, trapping the aluminum hydroxide which was calcined into aluminum oxide by the torch's flame. (at least that was the plan)
Shown also is a natural ruby from Mysore, India.
