The "mushrooms" protruding through the decking is to allow light below decks. To ensure the hull was strong enough to withstand the force of the ice portholes were not cut into the ships hull, instead this novel solution was used. The hull is made of wood, as there was more experience in making strong whaling ships from wood and the wood could flex more to accommodate the ice compared to steel. At 30 inches thick using 3 different types of wood, the hull structure is very impressive.
