Long stored 08709 is seen at RSS Wishaw pending developments a couple of years back. The former 'Molly's Day' having been stored at Bescot for many years prior to being sold to RSS. It was purchased along with its Bescot roommate 08580, the pair having been moved to different spots on the West Midlands site in their years of storage. 08580 has since been reactivated by RSS and is currently one of the pilots on hand at Ashfordby Test Centre. 08709 has now been moved from the position it is pictured in here, to the area near to the main repair shed at Wishaw. Time will tell whether this is for further stripping or the beginning of it's own reactivation...

 

A little history of the loco. New in the Spring of 1960 and first allocated to Thornaby. It remained on the books here for a 5 year spell before being reallocated to Normanton in 1965. It stayed based in Yorkshire for the next 6 years or so having spells at Royston, Healey Mills and Doncaster. 1971 saw the loco move down south and to Finsbury Park. Again, the loco spent time at Ferme Park C.S following the closure of Finsbury Park as well as Bounds Green and Stratford.

 

By now under the ownership of EWS, it remained in the Capital (notably at Stratford and Old Oak) before moving away in 1998. 709's next allocation (on paper at least) was to Scotland for the first time, with a brief period allocated to Motherwell. I don't believe the loco actually crossed the border but served at Carlisle when the cities shunter duties were covered by Motherwell allocated locomotives. With the transfer of the Carlisle duty to Allerton in the summer of 1999, the loco found itself under the command of the South Liverpool depot but remained up in Carlisle.

 

Due an overhaul 08709 was called to Ferrybridge, the former National Power depot, which at this point had a second lease of life and had became the main EWS facility for shunter overhauls. It joined the queue for it's 'Super E exam' before being released in EWS maroon/gold in the summer of 2002.

 

Now allocated to Toton, the loco was put to work in Rugby where it stayed for a couple of years. An allocation transfer to Bescot came in 2004 with the loco remaining at Rugby until 2005. Moved to Bescot in 2005 it was named 'Molly's Day' at an event in Walsall.

 

Various Bescot duties were covered in the next couple of years with the Depot/Yard Pilot role and a period at Daventry. To my knowledge, the loco never served at Wolverhampton Steel Terminal which appears to have been boxed off by 08632 and 08714 in the EWS years. Mechanical issues saw the loco sidelined at Bescot in 2008. With repairs not coming, it started to donate parts to keep other members of the fleet going. It was subsequently denamed with the nameplates transferring to 08907 in early 2009. Over the next 7 years or so it remained in storage being moved around the depot/yard areas at various points with other long term demic 08580.

Both were offered for sale and purchased in late 2015 by RSS. Will there be another chapter to this locos 60 year career?

Been stored at emr Kingsbury for years never moved

08784 had arrived from the GCRN at Ruddington for repairs including to it's generator. Starting life in the Spring of 1960 as D3952, a product of BR Derby works, it's first 'home' was Old Oak Common. It is perhaps best known to me for it's long allocation to Allerton through the 1990's and early 2000's clinging on to it's BR blue livery until it's 'Super E' exam at Ferrybridge depot in 2003, being one of the last of the class to be treated at the site. The remainder of it's EWS/DB career was pretty standard, all bar for a joy riding incident at Tinsley in 2006. Withdrawal came in 2011 at Toton where the loco remained until it's sale in to preservation in 2016 to the GCRN. The loco seems likely to go on hire via RSS in a similar arrangement to sister loco 08922 when repairs are complete.

That s why we should check every possible planet, moon or asteroid belt. Moreover, every planet is unique and can tell scientists something new and may be important. We ve already done several discoveries. But “navigators” always hurry us up if they find star system useless for them. We must do something.

– Why have I chosen RSS Korolev? Every captain wants such ship. Fast. Huge. Convenient. Never mind, I m just joking. Someone else would say something about a new frontier and a spirit of discovery. As for me, it s just a new experience. You know, if you are captain, it s almost impossible to find anything except cargo ship. Or a liner for the lucky ones. It s not bad, but those routine delivery missions are too identical. Fly somewhere, take cargo, go back, repeat. This research voyage is completely different. Much more responsibility. There are larger cargo ships, but the crew is always low, a couple of dozens at the biggest ones. And all of them are captain s subordinates. Captain is a god on his ship. Here… everything is different. Hundreds of scientists are not just passengers. I have to change course if some astronomer finds some unusual star or if a biologist decides to scan particular planet for life. It s a bit annoying. Some more conservative person could find such situation real headache. But I don t want to return to the freighters.

– They can say everything they want, but NavSystems was a general sponsor of this mission. So our aim is establishing new hyperspace routes and correcting old ones. Most expansive and complicated equipment of this ship are all kinds of hyperspace scanners. Laying a new route isn t a simple task. You have to keep in mind many factors to make it fast, reliable, safe, economic. And profitable for company. Days, when ship had to have huge powerful expansive computer onboard to calculate hyperjump, are gone. Companies like NavSystem provide access to their servers to make calculations as simple as it possible. Global hyperspace beacon network collects all necessary data; servers process it and give all parameters of a jump for a fair payment. This entire infrastructure has high running cost, so we can t do it for free.

Jacutinga - Aburria jacutinga (Spix, 1825) - Black-fronted Piping-Guan

08598, still carrying Potter Group bright yellow livery, is on site for repairs fresh from AV Dawsons, Middlesbrough. Another loco that is celebrating it's 60th this year, being introduced as D3765 way back in 1959. The locos first allocation was Manchester Longsight and stayed in the Manchester area for the first 15 years of it's life or so. Withdrawal from BR came early with less than 30 years service, laid up from Crewe Diesel in 1986. Sold in to private ownership, the loco had several owners before it's most notable time with the Potter Group at both it's Knowsley and Ely terminals. AV Dawson's purchased the pilot in 2017 and put it straight to use working alongside their 2 serviceable gronks 08600 and 08774. Of note the loco retains its Potter logo's on the cab sides but thankfully has lost the ghastly caging that was applied over the windows during its time with the group.

Although at first glance you would be forgiven for thinking that this loco is at the end of the line and awaiting the chop. The good news is that it is in fact on the comeback trail with Railway Support Services. Having been at Tyseley for over a year, the Gronk has been moved back to Wishaw to allow for its overhaul and repaint to be completed. At the time of writing, the plan was for this shunter to be the next to receive major attention once 08516 engine repairs are complete and the loco moved back to Briston Barton Hill. This is as ever subject to other members of the RSS active fleet needing unexpected attention in which they would likely be prioritized.

 

The loco itself was completed at BR Crewe Works way back in the spring of 1959, its first identity being D3735. Its first allocated shed was St Margaret’s in Edinburgh and has spent its whole BR career in Scotland. 08568 having called Inverness, Aberdeen and Motherwell all home at some point or another. During its privatised career, the loco has been based at Glasgow works for many years and with it had several different owners as the plant changed hands.

 

During its Alstom ownership, it was overhauled, along with other Glasgow works resident 08730 (which coincidentally is now owned by RSS and is visible in at least one of these shots) in the early 2000’s and released in an attractive two-tone grey with red sole bar, buffer beams and finished off with a blue roof and the name ‘St Rollox’ in yellow on the battery boxes. 08730 received the name ‘The Caley’.
