Seen here in York

The ship 'RRS Discovery' was built in 1901, and was the last traditional three masted ship to be built in the UK. She was originally constructed for Antarctic research purposes. After a long and successful life she is now in a custom-built dock in Dundee, the city in which she was built.

Original photo had buildings behind the ship of which i painstakingly cut with PS, took me several days!

Most people are passing by the small village of Torrenieri if it wasn’t there. But the main reason why photographers stop is this famous circle of Cypress trees. Seeing the trees bathing in late evening light there was an extra reason to stop again and making some images.

Enjoy...

Range Rover Sport looks like it's moving even when it's standing still. The wheel arches are subtly flared, power vents sit behind the front wheels and a sharp muscular line runs along the car's hips

RRS Discovery is a barque-rigged auxiliary steamship built for Antarctic research, and launched in 1901. She was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in the United Kingdom. Its first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first, and highly successful, journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition. Quoted from Wikipedia.

RRS Sir David Attenborough finally left Cammell Laird shipyard to begin sea trials and crew training. It is seen here passing Seacombe with Liverpool's Three Graces as a backdrop. It did a 180 degree turn and berthed at the Cruise Liner Terminal. As it will be based in Holyhead for its testing the departure from the Mersey may be delayed due to the current lockdown in Wales.

Thanks to John Barton for the tip off that this was happening.

From a distance I thought the ship in port yesterday afternoon was a cruiser - but it turned out to be the RRS Discovery, which is a science ship.

I don't know if it is connected, but I heard on the Today programme this morning that scientists are investigating cod, the males of which appear to use regional accents when trying to persuade females to release their eggs. Apparently they are currently trying to discover whether Liverpool cod sounded distinctive.

I smiled to think of cod with scouse accents...

Having tried this spot before i gave it another go as conditions were fairly still to have the pole at full height.

Over the river at Cammell Laird shipyard, RFA vessels 'Wave Knight' and 'Tidesurge' are having maintenance while destroyer 'HMS Dauntless' is having new diesel generators installed. The red hull of the British Antarctic survey ship 'RRS Sir David Attenborough' can be made out also. The vessel is in the final stages of fitting out.

After service as a merchant ship before and during the First World War, Discovery was taken into the service of the British government in 1923 to carry out scientific research in the Southern Ocean, becoming the first Royal Research Ship. The ship undertook a two-year expedition - the Discovery Investigations - recording valuable information on the oceans, marine life and being the first scientific investigation into whale populations. From 1929 to 1931 Discovery served as the base for the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition under Douglas Mawson, a major scientific and territorial quest in what is now the Australian Antarctic Territory. On her return from the BANZARE, Discovery was moored in London as a static training ship and visitor attraction until 1979 when she was placed in the care of the Maritime Trust as a museum ship. After an extensive restoration Discovery is now the centrepiece of a visitor attraction in the city where she was built, Dundee. She is one of only two surviving expedition ships from the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, the other being the Norwegian ship Fram.

The RRS James Cook is a British Royal Research Ship operated by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). She was built in 2006 to replace the ageing RRS Charles Darwin with funds from Britain's NERC and the DTI's Large Scientific Facilities Fund. She is named after Captain James Cook, the British explorer, navigator and cartographer.

Her maiden scientific voyage, on 5th March 2007, was to study a hole in the Earth's crust revealing the mantle below.

She is seen here on a recent visit to Cape Town moored at Quay 6 of the V&A Waterfront. In the background (just partly visible) at the Passenger Terminal is the lighted up Luxury passenger liner 'Silver Wind'. Unfortunately I had no tripod for this capture. I also had to crop the left hand side quite severely as their was a couple who posed and tried to get into the photo! :-)
