Got up and early with Flickr friend, Steve Warren, to do some waterfall photography but the bright sun was not having it. Steve took me to a little cascade spot on Fish Hatchery Road off US276 not too far outside of Brevard, NC. A nice little spot that was still mostly in shade. This is about the only photo I liked from those I took. Always fun to get out with the camera. Please check out Steve's photostream.

The RRS Discovery is a barque-rigged auxiliary steamship built in Dundee, Scotland for Antarctic research. Launched in 1901, she was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in the United Kingdom. Her first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first, and highly successful, journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition.
After service as a merchant ship before and during the First World War, Discovery was taken into the service of the British government in 1923 to carry out scientific research in the Southern Ocean, becoming the first Royal Research Ship. The ship undertook a two-year expedition – the Discovery Investigations – recording valuable information on the oceans, marine life and being the first scientific investigation into whale populations.
On her return from the BANZARE (British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition), Discovery was moored in London as a static training ship and visitor attraction until 1979. That year she was placed in the care of the Maritime Trust as a museum ship. In 1986 she was moved to Dundee, the city where she was built. After an extensive restoration, Discovery is now the centrepiece of a visitor attraction in the city.

Looking up at the masts. Discovery was one of the last wooden three-masted, barque rigged sailing ships to be built in Britain.

After a few early tries with too many clouds, this morning at Schwabacher Landing became magic with the sky on fire just before sunrise at 5:40am. Schwabachers Landing is located a few miles south of Snake River Overlook, along the east shore of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park.
Enjoy...

I visited the botanical garden at the U of NC - Charlotte today. This White Spiderwort caught my eye (mostly because there were very few flowers blooming today). But when I looked at it on my computer the tiny hairs in the flower's center amazed me. This is a very small flower and to see that level of detail is one reason I've become fond of macro photography. You just see things differently.
This was photographed with my Lensbaby Velvet 85 with a +2 closeup filter at about f/8 I think.

It occurred to me that I may never have posted a black and white image of the Discovery. I may be wrong but if not I remedy that with this offering.
After visiting White Owl Falls last month, we decided to check out DEW Falls which is right down the road. I've never been particularly fond of DEW as the water flow has never been good and compositions are limited.
But on this day the water was looking pretty good and I found a couple of compositions that weren't too bad.

Found this straw flower around our yard. The background was very blah so I blended in the Delight texture from the Kathleen Clemons collection.
This image was taken with my Nikon D850 and a Lensbaby Velvet 85 with a +2 closeup filter.

I set out with a view to get this ship how I wanted, low down in the dry dock. Which meant me jumping the gates. It was worth it. I had minutes before the wind picked up and ruined the reflection.

With temperatures rising, glaciers around the world are rapidly melting. Many have already vanished, and others are on the brink of extinction. In light of this, I've made it a mission in recent years to explore the glaciers of Switzerland before they become mere memories in the pages of history.
As glaciers retreat, they leave behind new ice caves and glacial lakes, which appear and disappear within a few short years. This particular spot is one such example. Last year, it was adorned with icebergs, remnants of a nearby glacier, like the last fragile remains of a dying giant. Sadly, those icebergs have now completely disappeared. In winter, the water freezes over, only to thaw again in summer. But the Icebergs can't be found anymore.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have explored this area last year. Because this year, the route has been deemed impassable due to dangerous rockfall. The disappearance of glaciers dramatically alters the landscape, leaving behind unstable terrain that is prone to major rockfalls.
I was lucky to experience a morning of low clouds and a breathtaking sunrise. Unlike most days, the sunrise ambiance lingered, allowing me to capture not just this image but also a thrilling short film. This moment, in all its fleeting beauty, is a reminder of the urgency to witness and preserve what we can before it’s lost forever.
I have made a short film to record my journey to this incredible place; you may be interested in watching. Click here to get amazed with the beauty of this special place.
