we spent Christmas day at Ben and Abby's. The start to the day was not good. At 9 am a mad driver crashed into five cars outside Ben and Abby's house, including theirs, which was hit by a van and landed up hitting a tree. By the time we arrived the wreckage had been cleared, the police had gone and thankfully no-one had been present on the scene at the time of the crash - even the perpetrator made off on foot - so there were no casualties, apart from cars. But Ben's 10 year old Audi had just had a new gearbox and had been a car which had been given much attention, so if it is written off, which is likely, he will have lost a substantial amount of money.

However, the good news was that Max and Jane werre with us - and we had a lovely Christmas day.

A close-up of Roxy, with the contrast bumped way high. The bulk of this was done in-camera with a wide aperture and a slow speed given the moody flat cloudy afternoon light, and the rest was just a simple adjustment in the levels.

Por muchos conocida, en Av Mazatlan esq Fernando Montes de Oca. Mi abuela primero llevaba a mi madre y tias. Luego fué mi turno.

"Roxy, es el nombre de una de las neverías más famosas y tradicionales de la colonia Condesa. Ésta, es una pequeña empresa que ha logrado posicionarse en el gusto de los consumidores desde 1944, por su tradicional forma de elaborar sus helados, que está basado en una técnica artesanal, con productos naturales y de primera calidad.

De origen familiar, este negocio nació en el antiguo cine Roxy de la ciudad de Guadalajara, al que le debe su nombre, y se trasladó a la ciudad de México, cuando la familia Gallardo Rubio cambió su residencia a esta capital.

Luis Gallardo Rubio, propietario actual de la nevería comentó que su papá Carlos Gallardo Escoto, fundador del negocio, tenía una gran pasión por los helados, principalmente por la nieve de limón blanca, que él comía cuando era niño y vivía en San Juan de los Lagos, “la mayoría de los negocios hacían la nieve de limón color verde y él decidió hacerla blanca como cuando era niño”, dijo.

“Asociado con un profesor llamado José de Anda, mi papá puso el negocio en el pórtico del cine Roxy. Ese señor era profesor de repostería de la escuela de artes y oficios de Guadalajara y fue quien le enseñó los secretos para elaborar los jarabes y seleccionar la fruta y hacer de las mezclas con crema y leche”, relató.

El empresario platicó que su padre decidió probar suerte en la ciudad de México y así fue como en 1946 abrió oficialmente su primer local en la calle de Fernando Montes de Oca, en la colonia Condesa.

"El segundo local que abrió mi papá fue en la calle de Mazatlán cinco años después, cuando otro amigo llamado Carlos Baldewingaerd rentó un local para abrir una nevería que nunca estrenó, junto con maquinaria de Estados Unidos, pero él le traspasó a mi papá el negocio, al que también le dio el nombre de Roxy”.

A este nuevo establecimiento, se le agregaron antojitos como tacos, tortas, enchiladas, hot dogs y pozole, pero no tuvieron éxito y tuvieron que suprimirlos "por problemas que se suscitaron con los sindicatos de meseros y cocineros y sólo se quedó con la nevería", comentó.

En los años 50´s compraron el edificio de la esquina de Mazatlán y Montes de Oca donde se ubica actualmente la nevería principal."
