Flickr friends, I have a confession: I just can't keep up anymore. Wedding planning, book writing, house hunting, photo taking and editing, Getty submitting... life's a jumble.

But that's not the confession. The confession is that I just deleted over 5,000 "contact notification" emails. They've been building up for over a year now, and I realized today that I'm never going to get through them (I've tried, at times).

So, if you added me in the past year or year and a half, and still follow me, and care - shoot me an email, or leave a comment. And I'm sorry for being so very scarce here.

As in, reasons why a 3-mile-hike can take me several hours to complete: lupine, camera in hand, heavenly floral scents around, more lupine, balsamroot, a different camera for some variety, glowy spots on the trail, lupine.

This is from a few years back. It's one of my favoite spots, but it's a hard subject to get a good picture of. It's prone to high winds and blank skies, neither of which are conducive to photography. I got lucky on this particular day.

Sometimes my Nikon F100 and Portra film combine to create something that seems painted - soft tones, dreamy colors, lovely texture and a particular depth. I can never predict when this happens, but I sure do love the results.

The Olympic Workshop starts in just a couple of hours and I am really looking forward to sharing my favorite locations and techniques with the group. Rain today will put us in the Hoh....one of my all time favorite locations for forest photography!

The image above is from the Columbia River Gorge Workshop. We had some very nice light on this particular morning! We will be releasing next years dates soon, so keep an eye out if you are interested in attending.

Here's a companion photo to another shot that I shared back in January. Within a couple minutes after taking the previous photo, a wispy little blanket of fog rolled in off of the Columbia River Gorge and enveloped us for a minute before moving into the trees.

Let's be friends!

I hadn't intended to do this, but with the extra time spent at home I decided to compare the images I made last week at Rowena Crest with my Holga and Rollei cameras.

I had thought that they were both loaded with JCH but I had loaded the Holga over a year ago and forgot that I had put SFX inside.

Both were exposed with an R72 filter and processed together in R09 1:50 at 22 minutes.

I've posted the contacts of the images on the sides, with the combined images in the center.

The Historic Columbia River Highway also runs between Mosier, and The Dalles, Oregon. It runs through a semi-arid landscape of white oaks and golden grasses. It also circles Rowena Crest.

I had the Twirly Camera out at Rowena Crest in April. I am glad that I did not miss the balsamroot season this year, and especially glad that I switched back to slide film. Negative film just can't do this.

Hey, Flickr. Life's crazy, and I'm marrying this wonderful person in less than 48 hours, so I won't see you again until we're back from the honeymoon. Take care till then!

In golden hour light on the second day of October, the American Empress stern wheeler churned against strong winds as it made its way down the Columbia River from The Dalles.

A tiny break in the clouds illuminated the American Empress for a moment.

Zoom in to see the ship detail. The 255 passenger ship is tiny compared to the Columbia River and it's the largest stern wheeler to cruise the Columbia:)

The American Empress Lewis and Clark 7-night cruises begin at either Portland, Oregon or Clarkston, Washington.

I have always been a fan of night photography. So much planning goes into it, not to mention math (ick). I tried light painting and it just did not give me the results I was looking for. I asked some of the pro's how they did it and I was told you must take a shot pre dusk and a few hours later take another frame when the stars are out and blend them. I was told something about the poles and wide angle lenses but that was too much for my wee brain to handle. I have been an early bird all my life so just staying after sunset was challenging enough for me and now your telling me I have to blend them???? I do know how to do some simple blends (it just takes this chic hours)! I set out with my newly learned tips and came home disappointed. Not only did I not have enough stars but I had some trailing and it was rather scary waiting for it to get dark. I read some more and I found the 500 rule to eliminate star trails. I also learned that the darkest skies only happen 5 days a month (not necessarily on my days off either). I also found some detailed instructions on using longer brighter lenses to photograph the stars and using those frames to blend the night sky in. So armed with some more knowledge I went back out . I got much better stars this time but I forgot to apply the rule of 500 to a longer lens (doh). So here are the fruits of my labor. This was the most difficult blend I have ever worked on and the most time consuming to visualize and put together. Kudos to all of you night photogs.

Testing out my newly covnerted Infrared camera. Sun would have made it better.

I can see Oregon and Washington's dry side from here. The trees gradually diminish, and what is left after The Dalles is mostly grasses and rolling hills intermixed with rugged cliffs.

I love living in Oregon. It's a photographer's dream.

Risking repeating myself here. but these little guys are so darn photogenic!

People come and go, and you can't always control which ones stick around... but here are a few portraits of the ones that have.

is it possible to have spring fever before spring has even arrived?

Bloom the wildflowers.

Image made with my Nikon F100.

At first I liked this image because of the play of light on the landscape and the colors in the scene. It struck me as a painterly image. But the more time I spent with it, the more I realized that one of the initial reasons I composed this image the way I did was because of the roads - there are two different ones involved here. You see both the Historic Highway curving along in the foreground and then Interstate 84 arrowing off into the far distance. I remember reading somewhere on a plaque (always read the plaques, thank you Roman Mars) that the Historic Highway was built in a time where driving was seen as a luxury, where people went out on the weekends to drive... not necessarily to drive anywhere in particular but just to drive. So this highway was built to mirror the landscape and reflect it. It bends and loops and curves. It was meant to be, and is still, a fun thing to drive. Interstate 84 on the other hand wasn't built to be enjoyed, it was built to get drivers from one place to another, as conveniently and quickly as possible. I thought the differing ideologies here, hidden except under thoughtful inspection, were interesting. Driving has become so commonplace how often do we think of it as the end itself?

Went up to Rowena this morning! Only me & another guy were there...His name is Brian & he is not on flickr..can you believe it? :-) Brian, If you come by my stream...It was Great meeting you this morning! We had the place to ourselves..Well I have alot to learn...as far as sunrises & exposure & how to combat 90mph winds without cranking up the ISO!..It is what it is..Sunflare! had to have that..:-) The sky I am not happy with even though I used my Lee Grad filter! Still not enough Lupine for me!!

Setting up to photograph the inhabitants of Rowena Crest is not completely unlike performing in front of a vast, mostly attentive audience. Other than the sound of the wind, the only other noise that squirreled its way up to me was the slight rustling amongst the crowd betraying their mild restlessness. To give them credit though, not a whisper otherwise escaped their lips and they sat transfixed, either on me or those other things that so capture the attentions of wild flowers, while I methodically prepared for my split-second performance.

Despite the lack of applause, I think I was well received.

A super moon rose Saturday night above the all-too-close smoke of the Rowena fire in Oregon. The field, fence and mailbox remind us how close the wildfire came to many human structures, homes and livelihoods.

The mailbox here has a special significance for injured wildlife.

Heading towards The Dalles on US30, on the last hill before the drop to Rowena Dell and then the climb to Rowena Crest sits the Rowena Wildlife Clinic (www.rowenawildlifeclinic.org). The Clinic, located at 6900 US highway 30, provides veterinary care to injured animals, birds and strays.

The recent wildfire smoking just over Rowena Crest might strain the Clinic's resources. Please consider making a donation to this worthy nonprofit charity.
