This is one of the pictures taken at Rowena Crest in spring.

A special thank you to my friend, Losy, for the kind testimonial.

Please see Losy's work - you'll love it!

Near Hood River, Oregon, Rowena Crest is a stunning viewpoint and trailhead along the Historic Columbia River Highway that looks down on Mayer State Park and the Columbia River Gorge. The view includes the iconic Rowena Loops — the horseshoe curves that wind up to the viewpoint, a true engineering marvel.

The yellow balsamroot and the purple lupine were in full bloom.

My husband is a very patient man, I had him drive me here to shoot these wildflowers and then decided we needed to wait for about 3 hours until the sun was setting for the better light. It's a wonder I am still alive!!!

The park was kinda closed; many local peeps needed the fresh air and inspiration of Rowena Crest and Tom McCall State Park.

This was taken near Mosier, Oregon. The sky detail was enhanced, as it wasn't as dynamic after I downloaded the image.

The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest . Up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep, the canyon stretches for over 80 miles (130 km) as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. Extending roughly from the confluence of the Columbia with the Deschutes River in the east down to the eastern reaches of the Portland metropolitan area, the water gap furnishes the only navigable route through the Cascades and the only water connection between the Columbia River Plateau and the Pacific Ocean.

Lupine and Balsamroot wildflowers at daybreak in the Columbia River Gorge.

Stopped by the Rowena Crest driving back from Central Oregon. The balsamroot flowers were in full bloom. It was unfortunate that this was a windy day, trying to shoot between brief pauses in the wind was a challenge. But then again the Columbia gorge is well known for its winds.

On a plateau formed by lava flows eons ago, the Nature Conservancy’s Tom McCall Preserve at Rowena sits several hundred feet above the Columbia River. The preserve and surrounding oak woodlands are one of Oregon’s best locations for wildflowers, with the bonus of outstanding views of the Columbia River Gorge.

Hope that you all have a terrific weekend. I 've been [mostly] away for a couple of weeks and am looking forward to catching up on your streams.

Thanks for your visit. Always appreciated!

The morning sunburst energizes the waiting wildflower blooms with color, radiance and warmth.

I have wanted to make it here for the wildflowers for years, but each spring, it just did not work out. This year my friend Bonnie and I made sure to get there in time. Oh, it was so worth setting the clock for 4am!!! All I could keep saying is "OH WOW!" The balsam root is almost done but the lupine is just beginning. What a beautiful combination. They stretch on for acres and acres. Topped of with clear blue sky. Where the flowers end is the edge of the cliff that drops down to the Columbia River. The green plateau cliffs are on the other side of the river in Washington state. This is on the Oregon side. The mountain top shown is Mt.Adams.

Found on the hike to McCall Point near Rowena Crest this weekend.

Balsamroot at Rowena.

I just happened to be driving by and so I thought that I would stop and see how this years crop was doing.

The lupines have yet to come on, but the balsamroot is blooming. It should be great in another week or so if Spring will ever get here.

I came to Rowena Crest at 4.30 am not to miss the sunrise. It was too early for the sunrise but I saw beautiful starry sky over the Columbia river. Though there was a lot of ambient light, Milky Way was seen very clearly.

That is one shot, f/2.8, ISO 4000, 20sec.

View from McCall Point trail of the gorge last weekend.

I have been out to Rowena and the flowers are less than impressive this year. This is a shot from last year...

Barn viewed across Rowena Dell (formerly named Hog Canyon) in Wasco County, Oregon. Balsamroot in foreground.

I've done this shot a number of times and have never been happy with it. This one is closer. Five exposures focus stacked manually. This barn only has good light a couple hours a day, but then the flowers have sharp shadows, and the wind is usually howling making it difficult to get the flowers and the barn in focus with a small aperature.

Lupines and Balsam-root are peaking at Rowena Crest both down in the curves (above), and on the Rowena Plateau including Tom McCall Preserve. They are also abundant along most of the drive from Mosier thru Rowena. Read more wildflower reports at Oregon Wildflowers. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon OM11294

In the beautiful state of Oregon.

Pretty standard comp that everyone has and I'm proud to say that I do now too. Last years flowers left something to be desired but this year seemed a bit more healthy. Thanks to my new i-pad I spent 3 hours watching editing tutorials on colored gradient filters so now I'm left a bit more confused but hope you all enjoy. Don't hate, appreciate .Happy Monday

I watch over you, forest and meadow. Fear not, for I portend cool white streams of life-flow. And they rejoiced.

These are the oft photographed Rowena Loops in the Historic Columbia River Highway. I managed to catch them wit a little “dragon’s breath” on the hill. This is 4 pictures merged into one.

I decided to try my luck with capturing a sunrise at Rowena Crest along the Oregon side of the Columbia River. I was feeling optimistic despite the weather calling for mid-30's temperatures, 30+ mph winds, and rain. I was starting to lose hope when finally the clouds started to break up allowing some warm light to make its way through.

As the morning fog blew westward it slowly evaporated casting ever changing light and shadows onto the Rowena Curves, Rowena Crest, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon OM3904

Rowena Crest is one of my favorite places in Oregon. I think this time I came there a bit late. Balsam root flowers almost faded. But lupines were in full bloom.

The road between Rowena Crest and The Dalles is one of my favorite places. I try to go there whenever I can. I took this picture last summer near the crest.

What a wonderful feeling it was to experience this sunrise looking through the Lupines and out to the Balsam Root at Rowena Crest. It's a wonderful world!

Sun rising over the Columbia River Gorge at Rowena Crest, Oregon.

My cousin Melisma wanted to do something nice for a friend of hers and had him pick out a shot from my stream. You can imagine my joy when he picked this shot that I posted 5 years ago which was one of the first attempts at blending images of which I am not very good at ( and still not good at).Spent 5 hours re-editing it so we could blow it up 24x36 and print it on metal. I baked in a lot of my sharpening back then so I had to go back to the raw files and start from scratch. I am happy with the new edit and he is happy with his print so overall, today was a good day

This is from last April. The Balsamroots were out en masse, and the morning was colorful. I will likely miss this year’s wildflowers due to the pandemic. Last year’s will have to do.

Historic Columbia River Highway 30, Rowena Crest, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon OM11144

Friday night after work, Tyler and I headed out toward the gorge, with the intention of catching a sunset a Rowena and then heading to the Stonehenge monument.

We got there with just enough time to find some good foreground for the sunset which was developing. Unfortunately, the flowers aren't at their prime yet and it took a little bit to find some good ones. This was a lovely little batch, that I came across with just enough time to nail down my composition before a lovely sunset.

It's better bigger - B l a c k M a g i c

One more image from Rowena Crest. With a very strong wind it was not easy to capture the flowers.

I used ISO 320, f/11 at 1/160 sec.
