Route 1 or the Ring Road is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects the most populous parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,339 kilometres (832 mi). Some of the best attractions in Iceland, like Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon lie by the Ring Road.

The circle was finished in 1974 to celebrate the country's 1100 years of settlement when the longest bridge in Iceland over Skeiðará river in Southern Iceland was opened.

For almost all its length, the road is two lanes wide with one lane going in each direction. Where it passes through larger towns and cities the amount of lanes may be expanded, as well as in the Hvalfjörður Tunnel. Most smaller bridges are single lane and made of wood and/or steel. The road is paved with asphalt for most of its length, but there are still stretches in the eastern part of the country with an unpaved gravel surface. The Iceland Road Administration, Vegagerðin oversees the maintenance and creation of national to small access roads in the country.

Although paved, some portions of the road are still the original 1940s country roads, and contain hazards such as blind curves and blind hills, one lane bridges, and narrow passes. In winter, icy roads and sheer winds can make travel especially hazardous.

The maximum speed on most of the road is 90 kilometres per hour (56 mph). - Wikipedia

Route 66 November 11, 1926-June 27, 1985

Whenever I cross over route 66 at the biker church campgrounds and look east this is what I see. I finally got out of the car today and took a picture of it.

This is the iconic Roy's neon sign in Amboy, CA, along historic Route 66. Illuminated during the exposure by a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. This is in an upcoming book about abandoned Route 66 at night that will be due out in the spring. Thank you.

Getting off Route 37 in Novato on Harbor Drive toward Black Point and the Black Point Boat Launch, the bridge that carries Route 37 over the Petaluma River came into view with the light hitting it just right on an otherwise stormy afternoon.

I'd wanted to drive across this mountain pass in Sept 2016, but on the day it was planned there had been early snow overnight on the higher ground, so I had to postpone. On my visit in early August I got perfect dusk light and conditions for the drive.

Many thanks for your visits / comments / faves!

After the ski, returning to Calgary, I captured a section of highway just north of Banff.

As we waited on the bridge for the next westbound a Sheriff's patrol car with a couple of deputies inside pulled up. Figuring we were about to get run off the bridge we still greeted them with smiles and waves. Much to our surprise once they found out what we were doing they were totally cool with it.

They turned on their rear directional lights for safety and hung out until the train came. After showing them the way it looked in the camera they continued their patrol. Very friendly guys that seemed genuinely interested in what we were doing.
