Homemade vanilla bean ice cream floating in our home brewed root beer at Monarch.

Not available in many areas, I am lucky as I have four or five to choose from in my radius of how far I will drive for fast food. I chose the location that is closest, naturally. Plus, it is right next to city hall and the police station so I trust it 100%. A & W is a place that is near and dear to me. Not only was it one of the first jobs I applied for and didn't get (I was only around 15 at the time), but it was later my job on campus for the very brief time I was away at college. The truth is, I enjoyed working there more than going to class, probably why it was for only a 'brief time.' FUN FACT: You will see everyone in your dorm, and more, if working at a fast food establishment on a campus.

With it being one of the oldest fast food franchises in the world, over 100-years-old, I probably should have included it in volume one, or maybe volume two at the latest, but I didn't. So, here we are in volume IV of The Crazy 8's Fast Food Feast Fest and A&W is finally getting it's just dues.

It's really a relatively easy order to put together, and not because the menu is limited, it's actually kinda large, but rather because it has so many iconic items that one may not know are associated with A&W. Truth is, I mostly set this order up 2-3 years ago when I was looking at potential entries for volume IV of The Crazy 8's Fast Food Feast Fest and seeing what would work and what wouldn't.

The items I went with:

DOUBLE PAPA BURGER

CHICKEN SLIDER

FOOTLONG CONEY DOG

CHEESE FRIES

CHEESE CURDS

ONION RINGS

CORN DOG NUGGETS

ROOT BEER FLOAT

DOUBLE PAPA BURGER

The signature burger of A&W, made with a sauce that is similar to McDonald's special sauce and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. If I had to compare it to something else I would say it's like a Burger King Whopper minus the flame broiled taste but with McDonald's special sauce instead of mayo and ketchup.

CHICKEN SLIDER

The chicken sandwich, for places that have one, is almost as much an order staple of The Crazy 8's Fast Food Feast Fest as burger, fries, and a drink. I was initially going to get the chicken tenders because this was a 'slider' but I figured I could shave a few calories and cents off if I switched to this sandwich and still have basically the same thing since it's just a chicken tender on a bun, so I did. Honestly, it tasted more like turkey than chicken and I know that's a weird thing to notice and say but that's what I picked up from it.

FOOTLONG CONEY DOG

Almost as much of a signature to A&W as the Papa Burger or Root Beer Float. The softness and airiness of their buns is more noticeable here than with the burger, yet it surprisingly holds together and prevents a mess even with a generous amount of chili and onion.

CHEESE FRIES

While chili cheese fries is an option, if getting a footlong coney dog I'll usually limit it to just the cheese fries.... and they're perfectly fine like that. Added one ketchup packet and this was the food item that tasted most like how I remember it.

CHEESE CURDS

These are some mighty big curds. I saved them til last and was only able to eat two of them.

ONION RINGS

Possibly my favorite item in the order, maybe because they were all I could smell. Very large cuts, good amount in the bag.

CORN DOG NUGGETS

Added these on at the last minute because I decided against a double cheeseburger and they're something unique to A&W. They taste like a corn dog, and are something you won't get at most places.

ROOT BEER FLOAT

A taste only Americans know, a menu item so iconic that it has its own line of root beer soda for as long as the 100+ years the franchise has been in existence. What can one say about the root beer float... it's almost as American as apple pie and A&W is as close to the source as it gets.

It is worth noting that previous chapters of previous volumes, mostly volumes I and II, would run in the $25-$35 range. Except for the pizza orders of each volume, and except for Taco Bell, the first order of the first volume, which rang in right around $20 and Five Guys which is still the current high at $44; most orders were in the $25-$35 range. That started changing in volume III and now most orders are in the $35-$45 range if I am lucky and find a deal. This came in at a comfortable price that was under $35 for me, good by 2023 standards.

Looks like the local team lost, which means this concludes The Crazy 8's Fast Food Feast Fest for 2023. Another one-time 'special edition' could occur later in the year, National Fast Food Day is in November and there could be an extended special edition if playoffs are in the cards in early 2024, but it could be awhile before volume IV is finished and I would not be surprised if volume IV is still not done by next September's edition of The Crazy 8's Fast Food Feast Fest.

After a long day of chalk drawing and bubbles, nothing beats having your first rootbeer float. She loved it and deemed it "Silly!"
