A statue of a different kind (2020).
Like the tough old oaks.
Barbara Jordan, a strong woman and civil rights leader from Texas, who left a large impact on her state and her country, is honored on the campus of the University at Austin.

"The Battle Oaks that surround the Barbara Jordan statue are a historic landmark in themselves. The three live oaks were present on the original Forty Acres when the university first opened in 1883. The oaks are believed to have existed prior to the Civil War."
This is my father; my dad. What else can we add to those words infused with so much meaning?
He died when I was young and couldn't counsel me in my adult life. Yet what I learned from him, consciously and subsonsciously, is the foundation of my life. Even after so very many years it brings tears to my eyes to write of this. Having the faults of all mortal men he was at the same time an amazing human being.
I miss you dad. You blessed us all and my family, indeed around me ,benefit from what you taught us.
Happy Father's Day to all the men out there, fathers or not. Remember you are all role models and leaders for those around you. I've always thought the below text very moving. Please take a few moments to read it.

Brig. Gen. Khatool Mohammadzai, director for womens affairs in the Afghan army, ANA Ministry of Defense and for physical training of recruits visits the Bastion Hospital at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Dec. 24. In the afternoon Moammadzai had lunch at the new Afghan Cultural Center, met Marine Maj. Gen. Angela Salinas and consulted with several Afghan women as part of a leadership forum.

Maria Costello was riding a 1961 Manx Norton 30M, in the Barry Sheene Memorial race.
Maria Costello MBE (born 9 June 1973, Northampton, England) from Spratton in Northamptonshire, is a British motorcycle racer who held the Guinness World Record for being the fastest woman to lap the Isle of Man TT course at an average speed of 114.73 mph until Jenny Tinmouth took the record at the 2009 TT.
Maria Costello was the first woman (solo racer) in the history of the Isle of Man motorcycle races to stand on the podium when she took third place in the Ultra Lightweight category of the 2005 Manx Grand Prix. Riding a Honda RVF400, She became the first woman rider of a solo machine to take a podium finish in either a TT race or Manx GP. Her success as a female motorcycle racer and success on the track has attracted attention from the media and the motorsport industry.
In her debut appearance at the North West 200 Irish road race she came third in the 400 cc class on a Honda RVF400, placing her 7th overall, in the joint 125 cc/400 cc race. She also raced in both 600 cc classes on her Honda CBR600RR.
In 2004 at the Isle of Man TT races Costello achieved a Guinness World Record by becoming the fastest woman to lap the Snaefell mountain course at an average speed of 114.73 mph. She also finished 8th in the Senior race of the Manx Grand Prix (collecting a Silver replica award) in a field of more than 80 competitors.
She has won a total of eight Manx Grand Prix Silver Replicas and one TT Bronze Replica. These are trophies awarded only to those who finish within a percentage of the winner’s time.

She teamed up with Faye Ho's FHO team in 2022 in a mentor role to nurture up-and-coming female motorcycle racers.
She said: "I'm involved with FHO looking after five young girls that race for Fay as well.
"And obviously that's fantastic, there's nine competing in the junior Supersport class, but still that's small numbers really.
"Racing's tough for anyone - it's changing though and hopefully we will see more coming in."
She was awarded an MBE for services to motorcycling in 2009, made history again in 2019 when she became the first woman to take part in the TT as both a sidecar and solo competitor in the same year.

for Social studies, we had to do this research project on inspirational women and how they're inspirtaional to people or the world. they gave us a list of women but i didn't like any of them. some of them were shakira, beyonce, marilyn monroe, harriet tubman, and so on. i told my S.S. teacher, Ms. Dennehy, if i can choose my own. and she told me, sure, so i picked miley cyrus cause she's my role model. I told her, and she was fine with it. When i told my friends, they thought i was playing around, and some of them were like "oh, you're getting an F" and blah, blah, blah <3 so, i had 5 days to write an essay about her childhood and how she accomplished everything and how she's inspirational. it took me 2 days to type my essay. and i typed 1 1/2 pages long. Then, i did my collage. [picture] it looks kinda messy but you HAD to see it in real life. it looked better. plus, i took it with my daddy's phone. x) i seperated them from her clothing line, to her CD'S she's released [including hannah montana], her magazines of 2009, her tours, and her family/ young years. so, the next day, i took it to school, showed it to my friends, and they were like "oh, you were serious?" and were like "F".
when i got to S.S, i handed my essay and my poster. and about, 2 weeks later, i got my grade back and got a 10/10. that's right, an A. i was so happy. my other friends who were bringing me down got b's and c's. i rubbed it in thier faces of course and did a little victory dance xD i was so happy. all my hard work actually paid off(:

Sunrise this morning on a golf course where I live.
My thoughts turned to the many mentors and role models we each have during our formative years. Like many young people who grew up in the latter part of the 20th century one of mine was Paul Newman. His generosity of spirit and contributions to the larger community appealed to me as did his determination to listen to the beat of his own drummer and act upon that cadence. As we mourn his passing we honor his character and exceptional accomplishments.
A final tribute is best left to his wife, Joanne Woodward, who said of him recently;
"Sexiness wears thin after awhile and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that's a real treat!"
May he rest in peace.
