My post yesterday of this visiting porcupine did look odd, making some wonder where his head was. Here's another shot of him as he slowly vamoosed showing a profile of his small head.

Their nose and bellies are where predators attack them so they do their best to keep their back to attackers and not get turned over.

Porcupines have a relatively high longevity and hold the record for being the longest-living rodent, with one individual named Cooper living past 32 years. Not surprising when they have those hurtful weapons on their backs.

A baby porcupine is a porcupette. When born, a porcupette's quills are soft hardened hair. They harden within a few days, forming the sharp quills of adults. Hmmm, interesting name for the one thing you shouldn't do is pet a porcupine.....

Thanks for any comments, faves and suggestions!

Chipmunks are small, ground-dwelling members of the squirrel (Sciuridae) family known for their burrowing habits and love of nuts.

I think the skull is from a squirrel. The seed is from a California Buckeye.

The brown-hooded kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) is a species of bird in the subfamily Halcyoninae, the tree kingfishers. It has a brown head and blackish and turquoise wings. It is found in Sub-Saharan Africa, living in woodland, scrubland, forest edges, and also suburban areas. This kingfisher is generally seen alone or in pairs. It usually forages on the ground, mainly feeding on insects, and also eating scorpions, reptiles, small birds, rodents and fishes. Eating snakes and lizards as long as 25 cm (9.8 in) has been reported.

Red squirrel in my hometown park :) They already looking for a food after Winter.

The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Europe and Asia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, primarily herbivorous rodent. In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America. The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands. The squirrel makes a drey (nest) out of twigs in a branch-fork. Tree hollows and woodpecker holes are also used. Squirrels are hunted by martens and birds of prey. The red fox, cats and dogs also can prey upon the red squirrel when it is on the ground.

I combined 2 Wombo images (style VFX) for with 5 of my photos of squirrels and a chipmunk. Ran it through JixiPix Impresso Pro to soften and blend the edges a bit.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a South American rodent species and can live over ten years. Already more than 100 years ago, the animals were introduced to Europe for fur and meat production. With a body weight of about 9 kg, it grows up to 65 cm long, plus a tail length of about 45 cm.

The striking yellow-orange colored incisors are particularly hard and grow back for life.

June 2022....

My brother Joe and I were camping in the Platte River Campground at Sleeping Bear Dunes photographing birds. On Saturday evening after we came back from photographing the birds Joe headed back to where our fire pit and picnic table were. As he was standing there he looked up and saw this Barred Owl watching us. We still had our cameras with us and we started shooting away. He stayed there for some time hunting and he did make a jump down to capture something. He/She came back up with a clump of leaves that we did not see any type of rodent in it.

All ticks live on blood and body fluids of vertebrates. Prey animals include: reptiles, birds and mammals such as rodents, ungulates, felines, canines, bats and primates, including humans.

I hope this sparrow survives the tick, poor little guy !

Peregrine Falcons mainly eat birds, rarely mammals or rodents.

This is the first time I’ve witnessed a Peregrine Falcon eating a gopher.

Taken in the Trossachs in Scotland. This tiny mouse is the smallest European rodent to give you an idea of its size the lead to my M/Home is about 10mm across.

American Red Squirrel.

Between 10 5/8 and 15 1/4 inches long. The smallest tree squirrel in its range. Rust-red to grayish red above, brightest on sides; white or grayish-white below. In winter black lines separate reddish back from whitish belly. Tail is similar to back color, but is outlined with broad black band edged with white. In summer its coat is duller. In winter has prominent ear tufts.

They are often abundant in any king of forest: natural coniferous forests, pine plantations, mixed or hardwood forests; often around buildings.

They range throughout much of Alaska and Canada; in the U.S. south through the Rocky Mountain states, in the east south to Iowa, north Illinois, north Indiana, north Ohio, north Virginia and through the Alleghenies.

North American/Canadian Porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum. "The porcupine is the only native North American mammal with antibiotics in its skin. Those antibiotics prevent infection when a porcupine falls out of a tree and is stuck with its own quills upon hitting the ground. Porcupines fall out of trees fairly often because they are highly tempted by the tender buds and twigs at the ends of the branches." -- Wikipedia

A California ground squirrel seems thankful. One of many impressions abundantly available daily at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge.

Mice do not hibernate. They survive winter due to their ability to forage.

The fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) is the largest tree squirrel in North America, known for its varied color patterns, including gray, reddish-brown, and black, often with a yellowish or rust-colored underside and a white-tipped tail. As rodents, they are opportunistic omnivores, eating nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, and insects, and are common in open woodlands, savannas, and forest edges across the eastern and central U.S. They are generally shyer than gray squirrels, spending more time on the ground, and are important seed dispersers for oak and pine trees.

This one is a dogs worst nightmare. Nothing worse than a face full of quills from a porcupine. Also considered a survival meal. Thanks for looking ..hope to visit soon.
