This was actually another series of tests using my 6D... a camera that has really no business doing a motorsports event but it handled like a champ due to learned techniques and dialing-in the AF system.
Specifically, this test was to see about AF performance with 1.4 and 2x teleconverters and working with only 20mpx images versus the 30mpx from my 5D Mk. IV as well as a reduced frame rate. My 5D did see some action during the event as I know what I can get with it.
I did notice the same AF misses (approx 9 out of 10 and in some cases, 10 out of 10, regardless of stability (monopod) and shutter speeds) when the 2x TC was attached. It actually yielded the same missed-focus that I've seen with my 5D and 7D.
After all the testing, tuning, dialing-in that I have done, it has led me to believe that the power restrictions Canon puts on their body's with TC's, is not feasible for me for anything in motion coming towards me or away from me: panning is actually no problem. For static shots, it's a great combo with this lens.
Aside from testing the AF with TC's, the ultimate test was the quality of the images at 20mpx. It's the same focal lengths and frame-filling that I'm used to with the 5D. Slightly larger pixel sizes didn't make much of a difference in finished pictures.
The 1dx Mk. II has been on my radar and does not govern either of the TC's... which should result in more focused shots. I know Mk. III is slated for later this year (after racing season but before the 2020 olympics) so it makes pulling the trigger now on the 1DX very difficult. Renting for the events I have planned is not a cost effective solution.

Love the Speed Racer inspired livery.
Made sure to also give the old 7D a good workout while testing the EOS-R. I will say that the image quality I was able to get from this was almost identical to shooting in Crop Mode on the EOS-R5.
I know the 7D mkII has a few more pixels (20 vs 17) but it does not have the low-pass AA filter of the R5.
I'll continue to review and revisit and compare but as I stated in the previously posted images of the EOS-R from the same event, quality glass is what is making the difference.
