Finally had a chance to take my new lens out for a spin (pun intended) and to put it through it's paces on my 5D Mark IV and 7D Mark II along with the 1.4 and 2x Teleconverters.
Wide range of weather situations over the 3 days I was there provided a lot of diverse shooting opportunities. My favorite was the morning rain which made for some nice shots.

Last run for the Ford GT's in their final season at VIR.
Normally I focus primarily on the Porsche's but given that this is the last season for the Ford GT's in IMSA competition, I figured I should get a few more shots of them. Glad I did. Pleasantly surprised with the results I got with the 7D mkII and my 300mm

Gearing-up for a return visit to Road Atlanta for the 2018 Petit LeMans, and reviewing everything I did last year.
This year, I am expecting a significant improvement over last year as things really didn't click for me until this race last year. Lots of shots I'm planning to improve upon as well as discovering new shot opportunities.

Flying Lizard Motorsport with a different livery design. Traditionally, it has been red and silver. Not sure if this was a one-off design for this event.
Used a 6-stop ND filter here to keep the aperture as wide open as I could to try and eliminate the fencing that was about 20’ in front of me. I could’ve gotten 10’ closer to the fence but my step stool isn’t tall enough (goes down in a little gulley) to be perpendicular to the car for this shot. So I’m back off on top of the little hill. Seemed to work though 2.8 would’ve been better. Any faster a shutter speed to get 2.8 would’ve shown too much of the fencing.
Finally having a chance to start editing photos from a myriad of events over the past month using a rented EOS R5. I was also able to rent the 100-500mm but will initially be focusing on what the 800mm has to offer on this camera. Thoughts and impressions welcomed.

Panoz at the turn-in point at the beginning of the base of the esses. Tricky vantage point to get a shot as the fencing is pretty heavy duty here. Not to mention being up on my toes on a step stool to get just above the Armco.

Heading back to 'Biscuitville' at VIR this weekend. Reviewing what I did last year to see what I want to improve upon and what not to do this time around.
I'm curious about my lens of choice this time around. The 100-400 used last year has a finicky diaphragm that throws focus front and/or back and is unusable.
When I was here in the spring, I used my 400 f5.6 and 1.4xTC and had decent results. This time it will be the 300 and 1.4x and 2xTCs. I did some microadjust tests today for the 2xTC. Planning to go once more in September down to here where I'll hopefully be testing the 600 f4
Ricky running to replace Helio. Late in the race, back up to 5th position after an early race shunt with the #38 dropping them to the tail end of the prototype field.

Experimenting with some processing. Opted for a bit of an inverse effect with this since the car is black and there were gravel-traps on both sides which were light-colored. Figured, why not?

I actually prefer the livery design of the #4 versus the all yellow #3 and considering the 4 has Nick Tandy now, if I had to wish for a 'vette' to do well, it's this car.
Made sure to also give the old 7D a good workout while testing the EOS-R. I will say that the image quality I was able to get from this was almost identical to shooting in Crop Mode on the EOS-R5.
I know the 7D mkII has a few more pixels (20 vs 17) but it does not have the low-pass AA filter of the R5.
I'll continue to review and revisit and compare but as I stated in the previously posted images of the EOS-R from the same event, quality glass is what is making the difference.
