Another shot from the "archives" this morning. This is the man that is responsible for much of the floral beauty that you see in these pictures. I had a chance to speak briefly with him while he was pruning the aubretia from the wall. As you might expect, he seemed to have a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of horticulture.
On our 2004 England trip, we stayed a few days at Bakewell, Derbyshire. On the first afternoon, we walked down the River Wye to the Elizabethan house and gardens at Haddon Hall, used as a location for numerous recent period movies, including Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth, and Jane Eyre. We liked this area so well that we returned in 2006, and this set has shots from both visits.
The Lune Gorge (aka Lune Gap or Tebay Gorge) has to be the most scenic section of motorway and mainline railway in the UK, familiar to a huge number of people, if not from this angle. This isn't a drone shot: my quaintly old-fashioned approach was to actually climb Birk Knott, using legs.
North-south traffic across the uplands between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales has passed through the beautiful Lune Gorge for millennia. Barely visible here, the single-track Fairmile Road (carrying the 'Pennine Cycleway', Route 68 of the National Cycle Network), on the left of the river, was once Wicker Street, the Roman road from Manchester to Carlisle.
More recently, the main western railway from London to Scotland (the West Coast Main Line) was constructed on the right (western) side of the Lune, opening in 1846. The same route was followed by the UK's oldest and longest motorway, the M6, which was split into two carriageways contoured against the hillside; this section opened in 1970.
I'd say the highway engineers did rather well – I certainly wouldn't say they ruin the landscape – and I'm not alone: a Civic Trust Award plaque in a nearby layby states that "This award for an outstanding contribution to the appearance of the Westmorland landscape relates to the 36 miles of M6 Motorway between the Lancaster and Penrith by-passes".
Since 2016, this has been the point where the National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District almost meet. On the left, the western boundary of the former is the railway line, whilst to the right, the Lake District ends on the bank above the motorway.
The large slope on the left rises to ~500 m on Knowles/Linghaw. Beyond are Whin's End (384 m) and Brown Moor (412 m), the the various ridges and valleys radiate from Arant Haw (605 m), on the skyline.
Brief stroll on Portobello Beach today with chum and his old hound, we were lucky on a day when the weather kept changing all the time we got a decent sunny (if very breezy!) spell for our stroll, got back to the car just as dark clouds and a deluge of rain came. The pooch enjoyed a short run on the beach then decided he would have a wee doggy paddle
Some quick people watching shots at Portobello -some folks sitting on the wooden groynes (the wooden dividers that run down the beach at intervals to help protect the beach from sand being eroded or drifting too much).
