The train is crossing the GSM - Tuckasegee River Bridge on its way to Bryson City, N.C. It was loaded with Smoky Mountain sightseers. You can see U.S. 19 to the left. My previous post, of an abandoned river cabin, was shot from this vantage point by turning slightly to my right. That sure is pretty country in the fall.
The GSM -Tuckasegee River Bridge is a Warren through truss bridge that was built in 1900 in Swain County, near the unincorporated community of Ela. Ela, North Carolina. 10.8.2012
Bredwardine
Another shot of this historic bridge over the River Wye, this time from the Bredwardine side of the river. This is a single track bridge just wide enough for one vehicle to cross whilst the oncoming traffic has to give way. I shook my head in disbelief that the council have had to paint double yellow lines on both the upstream and downstream sides of the carriageway across, obviously at one time some quarter wit has actually parked on it or the lines wouldn’t have been needed.

On Christmas Day, these six white-tailed deer carefully crossed the river with its tricky bottom (rounded rocks) over to Kerby Island. Once out of the water, they had to get up onto the ice, then back into the water and back onto ice. Very easy for a deer to sustain a sprained ankle or worse at this time of year, let alone crossing the river at any time of year. They all made it safely!

The Stone Bridge in Regensburg is considered a masterpiece of medieval architecture and for centuries was the only safe crossing of the Danube between Ulm and Vienna. Built in the 12th century, the structure also served as an architectural model for many other important bridges in Europe, such as the Charles Bridge in Prague.
l suspect it been like this over the past few weeks at Upper Arley...the water level in this shot must be at least 10 to 12 feet above it's normal levels...however, l have seen the waters level with the bottom of the railings before now.
l generally l park my car way below the distant arches when l go to Arley, had it been there then, l think the cars carpets might have got a little damp and my sandwiches would have been totally ruined.

The Stockton ferry "Shortland" discharges some customers before making the return crossing to the Newcastle City side of the Hunter River. Until early 1972, vehicular ferries plied the river crossing here, but ceased with the opening of a new road bridge a few kilometres upstream. Australia Day celebrations in Newcastle include a Harbour Swim at this crossing, for which the straight line distance is about 600 metres, but tidal flows often see swimmers covering closer to 700m.

The pièce de résistance of bridges in the Berwick-Upon-Tweed area of the UK is the Royal Border Bridge which was built between 1847 and 1850 to carry train traffic. It was the last link in the east coast rail line from London to Edinburgh. It is a gently curved 28-arch bridge that is 659 meters in length and carries trains 37 meters above the River Tweed. The bridge is constructed in masonry with brickwork soffits that form the underside of the arches and is covered by stone cladding. 15 of of the arches are over land south of the river while 13 are over the river itself. It is considered by many to be one of the finest railway viaducts in the world.

Numerous documentaries feature wildebeest crossing rivers, with many being eaten by crocodiles or drowning in the attempt.
While having the appearance of a frenzy, recent research has shown a herd of wildebeest possesses what is known as a "swarm intelligence", whereby the animals systematically explore and overcome the obstacle as one.

Great migration in Kenya. The crossing of thousands of Wildebeest. Moving through the forest they gathered on top of the steep wall and finally took the risk to descend at this point.
Awesome became sometimes awful when they decided to jump from a high level down to the riverside.
I'm sure the front row was more or less pushed forward by the ongoing flow of wildebeest entering the forest. Later they moved to a less steep point.

Another shot of the amazing encounter we had with a herd of elk in the woods near the Oconoluftee Visitor Center of the GSMNP.
The bull elk signaled by bugling, and the herd was on the move, crossing the river to the woodlands on the other bank.

If memory serves me correctly, l ended up sheltering from the rain under that bridge.
We crossed the Ohio River during the last hour before closing. Temps were in the high 80's, a few pleasure boats were returning to their harbors and barge traffic was busy. Not a dramatic sunset.
After another sessions dog walking along the River Severn...this spot used to be one of the old river crossing over the River Severn.
And can somebody please tell me how you can get a stinking Cold at this time of year please.
A bridge carries movement across Loch Leven, while the village beneath remains quietly anchored to the Highlands shore. Between steel and stone, the landscape continues its patient rhythm.
Crossing water naturally creates fear for horses, most (not all) horses are afraid to step into water, possibly because they have poor depth perception and fear stepping into the unknown. Also, in the wild, predators lurk at water sources, so a horse’s instinct tells him to drink and run. Horse owners and trainers need to establish a solid foundation of respect and willingness before crossing...these two show this nicely. I look forward to riding with them in the fall at the YaHa Tinda Ranch.
As the exit point becomes more crowded, some inevitably get caught in the flow and drift further down stream
Another shot from yesterdays walk down the south bank. Ive seen this shot many times over the years and wasnt too keen on it but the city lights reaching out across the thames won me over enough to have a go.

I was so taken by surprise when the group of 16 (or 17) red deer just strode out into the river that I grabbed some shots as fast as I could with little thought of getting settings right, before the moment was lost. Now I've tried to re-work the shot for a bit more clarity without losing the mist. I can't see myself getting a shot like this ever again.
A few more edits from a trip to Blackmount and Glencoe just after a snowfall.
From the bridge, normally this shot works better from under the wee footbridge, but it was deadly icy underfoot, and i didn't fancy getting soaked.
Polarizer and a grad to reduce the glare in the sky.
Bull elk with his antlers catching the light. And his mouth not catching all of the water from his drink :)

Best viewed large. All rights reserved. The snake river proved to be no problem for this young herd bull as he bugles while crossing in the darkness of early morning.
We had the honor of watching this bull moose and his harem of 15-20 slowly make their way through the woods, then across the Oconoluftee River. The bull made sure all the cows and calves were across before he followed them.

The origins of Tarr Steps, a clapper bridge across the River Barle on Exmoor, are shrouded in uncertainty. Some experts believe it dates from the Bronze Age meaning it would be several thousand years old. Others date it from medieval times making it at least 500 years old. Either way it is old! The crossing consists of 17 spans each topped by a stone slab weighing up to 2 tons each.
Prior to our arrival, I had it in mind to photograph Tarr Farm Inn from the opposite bank of the river. However, I found several of the slabs had been washed away during winter storms meaning the middle section of the bridge was missing. I therefore had to content myself with this composition. Sadly, the dog in the water is not mine but I thought he/she added to the shot.
I understand the bridge has now been repaired. It is not the first time the stones have been washed away and engineers have numbered them to ensure they are put back in the correct position..
Today there are gusty wind and wildfire advisories.
This sign, though, is to warn drivers not to fall off the low water crossing into the river. There are no railings because they would wash away. In wet years (like this one) the river flows over the road and I must drive through it to get home.
