An infographic detailing the history of guitar effects, starting all the way back to the 1930s with Rickenbacker’s Vibrola Spanish Guitar and progressing to the present day. Along the way, we’ll see iconic guitar-effect breakthroughs like gain and reverb in the 1940s to 1950s’ effects like fuzz (discovered by accidentally dropping a Fender Bass amp on a rainy street!) and distortion (the fortuitous discovery when Link Wray stabbed a hole in his amp’s speaker). The guitar effects hit their stride in the 1960s with the first transistor-powered guitar pedals, including the first wah-wah pedals and the first octave effect pedal among glorious others. The explosion of effects pedals in the 1970s reverberates today: signal alterations, distortion, modulation, time-based effects, and filter effects. A timeline of all these effects along with the iconic musicians who used what—Bo Diddley’s Trem Trol 800 Tremolo, Jimi Hendrix’s Leslie rotating speaker, the Rolling Stones’ Maestro Fuzz Tone, etc.

The Music of Sound: My simplified setup for the Le Black Noise show at MUTEK 2005 (shown without the wires from Olivier going to the first 2 inputs). A sortof no-input setup, exploring the sounds of the machines feeding themselves. I take the covers off the Boss pedals because then it's easier to punch 'em in & out with one's hands.

Performance of Stockhausen's Mantra for two pianos and electronics at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.
The Music of Sound: Ringen project final setup (well, with the lid open). Less pretty and symmetrical, but worked better sound-wise.
A condensed version of the finished Ringen album can be heard here: Ringen (condensed) mp3.
A Dalek, a perennial favorite baddie on Dr Who. A raspy voiced ill tempered pepper pot on wheels known for a single word E X T E R M I N A T E. Think Vice President Dick Cheney in a garbage can on a skate board wielding a toilet plunger, instead of the customary shotgun.
The BBC Radiophonic Workshop employed a ring modulator for the Dalek voice processing.

The Music of Sound: The passive ring modulator is a classic early effect... very simple: 2 transformers and a ring of 4 diodes.

Just picked up an old MuRF Moogerfooger cheap (cheap!), and was dissapointed that it doesn't entertain me in any similar way to the other three I already have.
The best part so far is that you can use the MuRF without the "animation" of changing the filters, and instead use it as something of a eq+driver. It sounds really good when used like that, but I'll have to decide if that's worth keeping it or not. Otherwise, that money would be better spent going for one of the über pricy delay units.
The other three are a really good combination. They keep me quite entertained. Two or more Moogerfoogers are so much better than one because you can patch them together and have their outputs controlling the other ones. I've only had more than one of these for a short while, and so far my one favorite thign to do is to use the "envelope" (pretty much loudness) output from the lowpass filter and use that to control other settings. This can make for a much more useful ring mod that gets warbly when you play louder notes, for example.
