Barquentine,

apart from sails and rigging she is 100% lego.

I spent ages on the rigging by the way, I hope it was worth it.

So what does Tulsa, Oklahoma and the New England fishing community have in common? 20 tons of Tulsa Oklahoma.

I spent a couple of weeks in California before Christmas and I think that it was probably the last time I saw the sun. Here low winter light has painted the masts of yachts in harbour seen reflected in the water.

Although it didn't occur to me at the time of making the image I think it was at least in part inspired by one of my contacts (whom I know only as B*i*B) and their ongoing exploration of reflections on water as a subject for abstract photos. See their work here; www.flickr.com/photos/58879484@N05/sets/72157627731846002/ .

Flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Flagship Niagara is also a major museum “exhibit” when in homeport. The Niagara in Erie, Pennsylvania, is a reproduction of the relief flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in a major naval battle of the War of 1812. On September 10, 1813, nine small ships – six of them, including Niagara, constructed in Erie – defeated a British squadron of six vessels in the Battle of Lake Erie. A pivotal event in the War of 1812, it secured the Northwest Territory, opened supply lines and lifted the nation’s morale.

The Flagship Niagara is a two-masted, square-rigged sailing vessel. In 1813 she had a crew of 155 men who manned her sails, 18 carronades and 2 long guns. Today’s Niagara sails with a crew of 40 (16 professional, 24 volunteer), and carries two 32-pounder carronades. Original 1813 timbers, which were recovered from the 1913 and 1933 reconstructions, are incorporated into her construction.

A couple of hundred senior citizens showed up in Vero Beach, Florida on August 16, 2025 to participate in the "Fight the Trump Takeover" event, a nationwide mobilization effort that comes on the heels of a showdown in Texas over electoral maps. They gathered in temperatures that exceeded 90°F (32° C) to speak up and be heard. If they can brave the hot Florida sun in August then you can speak up too. If you're not speaking up in your community then you are allowing this to happen. This event was also attended by members of the Vets Against Trump organization.1232

Spare a thought for the sailors working all that rigging! We got a look at the 40-gun steam-powered armoured frigate, the HMS Warrior, at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

What has two thumbs and a new lens? This guy!

My super zoom performs poorly in low light, so I bought a prime 50mm f/1.4 lens. I don't have a full frame sensor, so this really comes out to be closer to 75-80mm, portrait range.

Hervey bay/ˈhɑrvi ˈbeɪ/ is a city in Queensland, Australia. The city is situated approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) or 3½ hours highway drive north of the state capital, Brisbane. It is a natural bay between the Queensland mainland and nearby Fraser Island. The local economy relies on tourism which is based primarily around whale watching in Platypus Bay to the North, access to Fraser Island, accessible recreational fishing and boating and the natural north facing, calm beaches with wide undeveloped foreshore zones.

At the 2011 Australian Census the city recorded a population of 76,403.[1] Hervey Bay is an area of high population growth...

Climate

Hervey Bay has a mild climate with an average 30 °C (86 °F) in summer and 22 °C (72 °F) in winter. The coast is predominantly affected by the south east trade winds throughout the summer with occasional strong northerly winds and storm swells. These winds keep the temperatures down in summer and up in winter, preventing temperature extremes. As a result, Hervey Bay rarely experiences temperatures over 35 °C (95 °F) in summer or under 5 °C (41 °F) in winter.

Cyclones are a threat at times with Cyclone Hamish threatening in 2009 as a Category 5. The land mass of Fraser Island significantly affects the pattern of weather in Hervey Bay and protects the immediate marine environment from open ocean storm effects. Cyclone Oswald in 2013 caused significant damage in the area, mainly as a result of tornadoes spawned by the system. The average rainfall for the year is around 1,100 millimetres (43 in). December to March is the main rainy period, with a secondary peak in May and June. The months of April and from July to November are generally dry and sunny.

Whale watching

Hervey Bay is the whale watching capital of Australia, with humpback whales migrating along the coast between April and October every year. Researchers at the Oceania Project conducted a 14 year study which found the bay was an important social hub for humpback whales.[15] Whale number have increased from about 2,000 in 1992, to around 7,000 in 2005.[15] Hervey Bay is the resting place for Humpback whales, Mum's and Calves, they come to the Bay to rest and build up energy for their long travels back to Antarctica. The Adults come to play, socialise and there have been heat runs observed in the Bay. The Humpback Whales are known to be very relaxed in the company of the whale watching vessels.

Only a few blocks left for attaching the yards. Meanwhile working on the sails. Still not sure about the shape of the staysails so I skip them until the end. Standing Rigging is as complete as I intend to do it, I think.

The gunports differ, because I first want to test both with carronades before going to decide its fate as a merchant ship with 6 carronades (2 each side and two rear) or a 14+2 (rear) gun Brigantine. Most astern gunport at starboard will be removed anyways.
