Denver - We are pleased to announce the group exhibition Riddle of Ritual at Emmanuel Gallery. The exhibition will feature work by Sterling Crispin, Justin Beard, Alicia Ordal, Michael Schuessler, Owleyes, and sound-artist Jacob DeRaadt. The exhibition will run January 5, 2010 – January 12, 2010. Please join us for a reception on Saturday, January 9 from 7pm – 10pm with a site-specific performance by Bongo Fury.
Riddle of Ritual is an exhibition that showcases artists who are working around the theme of ritual. Human behavior is laden with ritual, from everyday life to spiritual practice.
Many of the artists in Riddle of Ritual are approaching ritual from the perspective of mysticism, in ways that build upon the tradition of mysticism’s inherent relationship with religious and/or spiritual ceremony. Sterling Crispin and Alicia Ordal use installation to summon the supernatural, while Denver painter Michael Schuessler and LA-based collage artist Owleyes create two-dimensional work that is saturated with symbolism, light, and consciousness. Artist Jacob DeRaadt manipulates sound in ways that mesmerize his listeners. Ritual can also exist in our daily activities, from waking-up and getting dressed to preparing food. Artist Justin Beard visualizes this in his video pieces.
Emmanuel gallery is a non-profit art space located on the Auraria Campus in Denver. Built in 1876, the Gallery is Denver’s oldest standing church structure. Originally an Episcopalian Chapel, later a synagogue, and now an art gallery, Emmanuel Gallery has been a destination for spirituality for over 130 years. Riddle of Ritual is responding to this site as a specific source of sacredness, ritual, and symbolism.
Gallery hours for this exhibition will be 12pm – 5pm, January 5 through January 12. Please note that we will be open on both Sunday and Monday.
Alone and apart we can be a source of frustration

In Riddle, an old mill town at the north end of one of Roseburg Lumber Company's major lumber mills. (Douglas County, Oregon) It appeared the this particular mill was mostly closed down and the town itself looked all but dead except for the grocery store and the school.
My brother's bike was in a magazine in which it was referred to as "the Riddler" haha there you go...

The continuing story of the Riddle of the Chipmunk: other than wearing my cool, rodent inspired tee shirt, i had more or less let this event pass into antiquity. Antiquity here meaning anything that happened to me yesterday or before. Then i got another email. It was the same feller with the same team of lads (and lasses? they could be coed, i don't know) asking if i had any drawings laying around that would go with their new theme. This year's team is called The Riddlers! No, not as you might suspect, from any great love of flying rodent-themed superheroes, that logic i could have followed but due to their enjoyment from playing guessing games with each other. (What kind of cerebral nerds are these soccer players anyway? Is this common behavior in the breed that plays the beautiful game?) Now i don't have a whole lot in my oeuvre that fits the title, Riddler, so, wanting to avoid copyright infringements and others pitfalls i set out with nothing but this name.
Well to be honest, the only other thing that comes to mind for me is the riddle of the Sphinx. So..

Bellísimo miniLP con una aventura narrada y dialogada de Batman y Robin enfrentándose al Riddler, y que responde al extraño título de If Music Be the Food of Death. Lanzado en una fecha indeterminada entre finales de los setenta y principios de los ochenta por Power Records, se trata de una aventura encantadoramente infantil, como cabe esperar. Compré este single por un mísero euro en la hace años mucho más delirante tienda madrileña de vinilos de segunda mano La Metralleta (cuando los vinilos eran basura para pajeros, no codiciados objetos de coleccionista), junto a otros productos de Power Records que ya les iré enseñando. Dos detalles hacen de este single una auténtica maravilla para fans del hombre murciélago: la autoclasificación del producto, humorísticamente inintencionada, como “Little LP”, y la fantástica portada del gran Neal Adams.
This young lady did a really nice job of playing The Riddler at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con Oct 22nd. She was happy go luck, as well as a eye opener to adding a twist to again transforming another male Character into a woman figured genius.
