An old mill town at the north end of one of Roseburg Lumber Company's major lumber mills. (Douglas County, Oregon) It appeared the this particular mill was mostly closed down and the town itself looked all but dead except for this store and the school.

New York, DC Comics, november 2o13. issued as Batman 23.2.

this is an example of one issue of the special "miniseries" (52 issues: that's some "miniseries"), Forever Evil, that runs throughout various of DC's superhero comics (17 of which feature Batman) that focus on the various repeat villains that appear in the various series. they all appeared in the same month (not exactly the definition of "serial") & each features a lenticular 3D cover , which i was curious to see the results of a scan of.

no doubt in the follow-up issues, The Riddler'll get his come-uppance, but, as befits a pamphlet with his name in the cover, in this issue he electrocutes, clubs, & dismembers his way to the top of the Wayne Foundation building (at one point strolling along eating a cup of yogurt) to play a game of solitaire while he waits for Batbruce Wayne to respond to his mayhem; all in all a fun-filled romp of gratuitous violence.

The Riddler here comes nowhere near the "was he acting or wasn't he?" antics of Frank Gorshin in the shitty television series of ago; instead, he's portrayed as a suave fellow (the cover depiction is highly unrepresentative of the character within) implacably going from A to B in utterly calm certainty he'll get there (he loses his cool only once, when Caroline Slater punches him in the mouth & he hauls off & clubs her in the face with his cane then gives her a zot of electricity before she can get up).

the one thing that puzzles me about this whole issue is the pair of opening & closing panels in which The Riddler is seen playing solitaire, as an inmate of Arkham Asylum in the former, on the parapet of the Wayne Foundation roof in the latter (wind doesn't seem to be a problem way up there). 1st: the layout suggests the game of klondike in both instances but it must be a special variant of The Riddler's own invention, since the layouts shown make no sense whatsoever (which is uncharacteristic of The Riddler: his actions & riddles may often be extreme but they do always make sense). 2nd: the layouts in both instances – separated by 4 years – are almost exactly the same, only 4 of the 17 visible face cards different & only one of the rows with a different number of cards. 3rd: a 2 of clubs would never go onto a face card of any kind.

given that "solitaire" is the title of the issue & such a prominent linking device in the art, you'd think that the artist would at least depict the game properly – or izzit some kinda cloaked riddle of his own?

What suggests this image ?

a) Eastern Europe

b) Transylvania

c) South America

The riddle man at the Minnesota Renaissance festival. Quite the character, this one. He noticed that I was taking photos of him while my son was trying to decipher his query, and then struck this pose for me. We tipped him, of course.

So, I was asked to join a photo group displaying pics from the Ren Fest. This was the best I got, and I had very few others. There are so many other great photos in that group, I am a bit embarrassed by the sparseness of photos in my collection. I'm very reluctant to snap anything without permission, but this guy seemed to pose. There were many other people I wanted to shoot, but I have such a hard time asking people permission to take their photos. I took all the courage I had to ask two friends to pose for me recently, asking strangers seems to be so far beyond me right now.

Next year, I resolve to be bold and ask for the shots I think are good.

Tom took a bunch of random con photos. Almost all of them look like crud because of the lighting in the building, and the large group in a small space. This one photo was my fave out the the entire batch. Emma just looks so darn hot!

My camera took the photo with no flash, but it took right as someone elses flash had gone off, thus the interesting lighting.

Replica of the bobblehead on the Edward Nygma's (The Riddler) desk at Wayne Enterprises. The core of the piece is a modified Count Chocula bobblehead (he was the right size and had easily sawed off arms). The rest is clay and paint. The head still bobbles, but a little less than before.
